  1. I'm fine if Chacin regains some of his old form, but if not I think Dobnak deserves first crack at the rotation spot. I don't know quite what to think of him long-term but he gave them some quality innings last year down the stretch. In the bullpen I'd love to see Romero figure things out. You can see the talent in that arm when he throws, he could be quite the weapon if they ever get him straightened out.
  2. There's always the exception to the rule, like Brian Dozier in his prime was much better in MLB than his minor leage career. But, while I think Garver is somewhat like Dozier in that he will be a better MLB player than MILB, I think there's definitely some regression coming. Especially if the ball doesn't carry like it did last year. I think he'll still be good and I'd be more than happy with a catcher with a .800+ OPS.
  3. I don't like this regime has essentially sold a draft pick for cash for the 2nd time now. Good that it seems like its getting done now. I'm weary of how Maeda will translate to the AL and the mileage on his arm but I think it makes the Twins the clear favorite in the division this year. If Graterol's health holds up I think the Twins will regret this trade, sad to see an arm like that go.
  4. I'm liking this deal less and less if it sounds like the Twins have to send Graterol plus more to the Dodgers for Maeda. I really hope it's not another significant prospect.
  5. This is a lets get a mid-level starter and keep beating up on the bad and mediocre teams only to likely get throttled in the post-season type move. Personally I'd prefer they would have used a guy like Graterol, if they had to trade him, to get someone that had some upside. Maeda is soon to be 32 and has a lot of miles on his arm. It does fill a need though. Could really come back to bite them though.
  6. If the Twins had unlimited resources, sure I'd do it, but they don't. If the Twins are going to blow that much prospect capital it should be to obtain pitching. They'd be better off having Sano focus on improving his defense.
  7. Good move for the team and for Miguel. The team gets some cost certainty and extends out a key player that was possibly gone in 2 years. That leaves Sano, Kepler, Polanco, Garver, and Arraez together at least the next 4 years with Buxton, Berrios, Duffey, and Rogers the next 3. The longer they can keep their core group together the longer their competitive window will last. The team must have a lot of faith in him as we all know the challenges he's faced in the past. It could be a lot of money to pay a defensively-challenged player who could challenge strikeout records. But he also has a lot of talent and seemed to make some big strides forward last season and the team showing this confidence could help him take another step forward. If he does it will be a great deal for the Twins. For Miguel he could be giving up some decent money if he does continue to hit, but he also gets the security of life-changing money that he should never have to worry about taking care of his family again.
  8. Nice to see a young Twins pitcher come up with 4 pitches, recent years everyone seems to have only 2 somehow and a 3rd they only throw 5% of the time. Thorpe has a shot as a back of the rotation starter if he can refine his command. Otherwise maybe his fastball can play up a bit in relief. He'll be in the mix once the season starts, but I think Smeltzer and Dobnak are the favs, they seemed the most likely to give the team innings in their starts.
  9. Nobody seems concerned that maybe we get the Homer Bailey of the prior 2 years that was 7-23 with an ERA over 6. I hope we get last year's results, but who knows. As for the Wes Johson Kool-aid everyone seems to be on, he has been here 1 year with mixed results. I like the guy, but people have him just turning around pitchers right and left and finding velocity. A couple guys had success, but what happened with Berrios? Guy turned into a complete disaster mid-season. Perez turned back into a disaster. I'm going to need to see a lot more going forward to say Wes Johnson is the pitching messiah.
  10. I'm guessing he's a pretty guy to have in the bullpen that could teach the young guys a thing or two. I still would have liked to see them add one better bullpen piece as well though.
  11. Interesting that people seem to be of the opinion that Madbum is a bum, the front office knows what they're doing, etc. Then why was the front office in on him all this time if he wasn't any good anymore? Of course he's not worth 5 years, in free agency a pitcher anyone wants is almost never going to be worth what he gets, that's the nature of the beast. So far this front office seems unwilling to spend high draft picks on pitching, unwilling to sign sought after free agents, and unwilling to spend much prospect capital to acquire pitching via trade. They still have some time left to prove me wrong, but so far I'm not overly impressed.
  12. What drives me crazy about this front office is the apparent lack of urgency. They screwed up when they put themselves in a position going into the offseason with only 1 returning starting pitcher. Now they're sitting at 2 and seemingly letting the market play out. According to Darren Wolfson's twitter as of yesterday they hadn't even met with a free agent in person yet. While they had interest in Josh Donaldson they had not yet spoken directly to him. It kind of seems like the trade deadline all over again. They seem to sit back and wait for things to play out and get left in the dust. I'm kind of imagining an agent speaking to his client saying Chicago is at 4/$60M, Angels are at 4/$55M. Player asks what about Minnesota, heard they were interested. Agent replies well, umm, Minnesota liked your Facebook page and they sent a text with a winking emoji earlier this morning, so yeah take that for what its worth.
  13. Can't believe the front office has allowed themselves to get into this mess of going into the offseason with 1 established starting pitcher. Free agency is not a great place to acquire a starting rotation. I'm guessing at least 1 of Pineda and Odorizzi are re-signed and 1 starter is acquired via trade. I have a feeling the 4th guy is going to be more bargain-bin than top free agent. The Twins are not going to pay over market and the odds of the few top pitchers wanting to come to Minnesota over a big market team is slim. The big boys have great offenses too and compete every year. Also some of those guys like the spotlight of a big market and some would view Minneapolis as kind of backwoods. I don't, but some of the NY, LA, Chicago type folks do. Possible a guy like Cole has some kind of link to the area or wants a change of pace, you never know and I'd at least make an attempt. Finally for the 5th spot I'm guessing this comes down to a Smeltzer/Dobnak/Graterol/Thorpe battle royal. Leaving more than 1 spot to this group seems crazy and I hope its not attempted. I think Graterol likely needs more seasoning having barely thrown above A ball and the rest of the guys are back of the rotation filler. Overall I think the odds of success having to build almost an entire starting rotation in the offseason is low. Will be very interesting to watch though.
  14. Great game from Odo, has given them all they could ask for. Hoping they extend the QO in the off-season. I'm weary of signing him long-term but willing to overpay for 1-year. At this point they need 3-4 starters between free agency and trades, will be a neat trick to pull that off.
  15. Better get it done here, according to the broadcast on FS1 the game if forfeited if the Yankees lead after 4.
  16. Agree that acquiring starting pitching via trade is probably their most likely scenario. Seems pretty difficult to pick up up to three starters via free agency with any success. I haven't seen anything that gives me any confidence in internal options. Smeltzer, Dobnak, and Thorpe look like back of the rotation options at best. Graterol isn't ready.
  17. Ok, now I'd definitely pull Adrianza from the game. Not like that ball was moving with any speed.
  18. Wow, that's pathetic, they just now have appeared to get someone even up in the bullpen.
  19. How is Perez still in this game? Baldelli does know these games are important doesn't he?
  20. With the September guys coming up I think it's time to go bullpen game the next time Perez's turn comes up. Or at least give him absolutely no leash and have people warmed up the first sign of trouble. Scary for next season-rotation as of now probably consists of Jose Berrios and that's it. Which sounds better than Jose Berrios and Martin Perez.
  21. With the problem with errors on this team I would have pulled Adrianza off the field for that. Not the error, but the complete lack of effort trying to field the ball and then going after the ball.
  22. They're just not a very good team, they're good at hitting-but that's where it stops. Poor starting pitching, poor relief pitching, poor defense. The last 2 months they are a .500 team, that's more than just a poor stretch. The only reason they're even a .500 team is because of that offense. It's been fun to watch outside of the many horrible endings lately, better than I was expecting going into the year, but I don't see them having much shot if they make the post-season unless they get miraculously hot in October. Could happen, just like the Vikings could win the Superbowl this year-so I'll watch-just not likely.
  23. One of the more brutal losses in memory. With this, Buxton out awhile, Kluber coming back-I'd be shocked at this point if they won the division. All momentum and confidence belongs to Cleveland at this point.
  24. Even yesterday with Cron and 2 outs-he was out by such a ridiculous amount, you can't send a guy when the only way he's safe is if the OF throws it to the backstop.
