I agree on the placing of Gonsalves above Romero, while the latter has a potentially higher ceiling the odds of it happening are not the best. Hope it happens, but probably a better chance he ends up in the bullpen that an ace starter at this point. Mauer really doesn't have much value, not a bad player at this point, but pretty low on the food chain for first baseman and no team in the league would take him at $23M with his current production. Not trying to knock Mauer, I'm grateful for the career he's had and all, just the reality of a guy at the end of his career with a big contract.

Article: Twins Sign Closer Rodney To One-Year Deal
sftwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just reading they were interested in Rodney made me cringe. I've always appreciated him being the other teams closer when the Twins were down in the 9th. Always thought they had a pretty good chance of coming back against him. I just have a feeling this is going to be a train wreck waiting to happen with him as a closer. I guess unless they get some starting pitching it probably won't matter. -

Article: Can Phil Hughes Surprise Us?
sftwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unless he can reach at least 92 in spring training or has miraculously developed good secondary pitches out of thin air I'd release him. I don't believe he can be effective without his fastball velocity because he's pretty much a 1-trick pony. His secondary pitches have only been effective if hitters are worried about his fastball/cutter. It's too bad, but sometimes you just need to move on and give the opportunity to someone else. -
Article: The Brian Dozier Trade That Almost Was
sftwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looks like a good move so far. If it really was pretty much 1:1 offer with no significant 2nd piece that's just not good enough. By not taking the offer it strengthens their bargaining position in the future with opposing GMs by showing they're not going to be forced into making a poor move. -

Still waiting to see Buxton's golden arm I hear about. Great at running a ball down, but 3rd best arm in the starting OF (including Kepler-I don't count utility infielders in my starting line-up). -
Kind of sad to me that your AAA utility player is your starting DH in an important game in September and your idea of a pinch hitter is throwing out Adrianza. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Vargas.

I'm not sure if Kohl Stewart has made some adjustments or not, but looking at his last 8 starts he has 40 SO in his last 44 IP. While the other results have not been real great, it is encouraging to see the strikeouts moving up significantly. He's still only 22, from most reports, he still has the stuff. Hopefully he's finally figuring things out.

I agree with giving Slegers a chance at this point. Now with Garcia gone and dropping rapidly out of the race, no point in wheeling Colon out there either. Personally I think Slegers is likely a AAA/AAAA starter that will fail, but he's earned at least a shot to prove otherwise.

Sometimes you really wonder what Rosario has got going on in his head. That was sad. -
I think the Twins are more than a little short of just Garcia to carry them to a playoff spot. I wouldn't have an issue moving young guys like Ynoa as part of a package for somebody they could use beyond this year. They've been entertaining but I don't think this team is good enough to be trading away prospects for short-term rentals. Eduardo Escobar is batting clean-up tonight. That's not good.

Maybe they're giving Gordon some time off? Seems like he's been struggling lately. Nice to see Stewart pitching well and racking up some strikeouts.

Article: Reflecting On The Draft 1 Month Later
sftwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I know a lot of people have the opposite opinion and I'm no expert but I'm still not thrilled with it. To me, if Lewis was #1 on their board, they don't get turned down by another player at basically the same bonus before selecting him. Just looking at the history of players selected at the top of the draft vs players selected at the bottom of the first round and below, it's not worth it to play games with that top pick. Hopefully they hit on one or more of those guys picked afterwards like they did on Berrios, but history shows there's a real good chance we'll never hear from them again beyond the minor league reports or as fringe major leaguers. I like Enlow at #76, but they could have just selected him at #35 or #37. I think they reached at both #35 and #37. I think Lewis is a good prospect, and I really hope he turns out great. With him I worry about the offensive side. So far he's started out ok, but he's also in the GCL. I just wouldn't take a guy that high based mostly of tools. I would never have taken Buxton back in '12 at #2 either. -
Agreed that Gonsalves could go up to Rochester after another solid start or two. Even though not optimal for the 40-man roster I'd like to see him start a few games at the end of this season to get him a taste of MLB to give him an opportunity to see what he's in for and give him the opportunity to see what he needs to work on in the offseason.

Article: Twins Select Royce Lewis First Overall

I guess ability to play SS, good speed, and questionable hit tool are in such high demand maybe they should just solve their pitching problems by trading Ehire Adrianza for some young arms? -
Article: Twins Daily Official MLB Draft Day 1
sftwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is sickening, toolsy hs SS, has massive bust written all over it. Have seen nothing about him remotely worthy of #1 consideration. To take a massive gamble on athleticism may as well just take Green or Gore. Just to have money for later slots-look at the history of picks 30-40, not much talent there, most years 1-2 players pan out. Compare this to the top 10, your key players are in the top 10 and you shouldn't mess around.- 720 replies

Article: The Scouting Skinny: Brendan McKay
sftwinsfan replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The more I hear on McKay the less I like. I know he's thrown a pitch here and there with more velocity but seems to work with a low 90's fastball and loses velocity as the game goes on. A large Ted Lilly doesn't sound like anyone you would want to draft #1 overall. Let's let go of the fantasy of him playing both ways, there is no chance a team is going to launch such an experiment with the #1 overall selection in the draft. I place near zero value on his bat if you draft him as a pitcher. By the time he would wash out as a pitcher he would likely be 4-5 years removed from hitting. Odds are he would reach the majors with a different team. Just my opinion but arguing for a guy due to his high floor is an argument for shooting for mediocrity. If the high floor really was legitimate I'd be ok with him, but as we've all seen from these various "quick to the majors" types the floors for prospects that get thrown around are ridiculous and most do not arrive nearly as quickly as advertised. Maybe the scouts see something else in him, maybe he's got just impeccable command of all his pitches. I just worry the margin for error is going to be a lot smaller for him. -
Article: 2017 Chattanooga Lookouts Roster Preview
sftwinsfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A lot to like about the pitching staff, starters and bullpen. I don't see much to get excited about with the position players. I see Vielma's ceiling as utility infielder. Gordon needs to go on the Miguel Sano diet plan. Someone get that kid a cheeseburger.- 25 replies

I see him fitting in a bit better with a N.L. team. Extra outfielder, late-inning pinch runner, defensive replacement. He has 39 career doubles in 1,309 minor league AB's. I just don't see him making it as a regular, unless on a terrible team with a lot of injuries. If they ever expand the roster sizes it would be nice to carry a guy like him to steal a base late in a game or run down a fly ball in the gap.

I guess I don't really buy into the fact that a healthy guy in his early 20's can't throw 150 innings in a season regardless of how little he pitched last year as long as it's monitored well and he's in shape. For all the rules around how to treat pitchers nowadays combined with better nutrition and monitoring of everything why is that arm injuries seem to be even more common now. It's definitely a blow to a system that was already thin in every category outside of relief arms, light-hitting middle infielders, and 4th outfielder types. I was also a little concerned with Molitor's comments the other day about Romero, something about we still think he has potential as a starter. Not real encouraging.
