  1. I'm stunned to see Kepler at #15 behind Harrison, May, and AB Walker, especially since he figures to play the same position as Harrison and Walker and play it better. I'm shocked to see Gonsalves is at #18, down with Bard #19 and Melotakis #20.
  2. You just compared Nola to two Hall of Famers -- one in the inner circle. He is looking more and more like a Twins target. And Verveking is looking prescient. Rodon is only slipping in comparison with Stansburg and Price -- not the current field, if only because no one has challenged him.
  3. More like Mark Redman ceiling.
  4. Fryer has already proven he can't hit.
  5. Theo hearts Beede. Edit: And the Cubs need pitching.
  6. That applies to all pitchers. Hence the expression TINSTAAPP
  7. Tulo comes to mind. Sort of like how many aces come from Venezuela or the Dominican? Not many. but would you turn one down or stop looking there. His defense at SS is reportedly above average. His hitting stats compare well to Tulo and Evan Longoria and Chuck Knoblauch and they had the advantage of aluminum bats. Of course he might not hit, but there are no questions of his hit tool compared to Gatewood's. He's added 10 pounds of muscle. There is no question about his strength. There is some question of his power, but it's not like he is Ben Revere. How much power does a SS need? The median Iso P for a qualifying MLB SS was .115 last year. The median SLG was .381. Emphasizing SLG over OBP is [suboptimal]. That paragraph is much below your usual standards, Jeremy. Anyone not named Rodon will have a ton of scrutiny. Let's see. An above average defensive SS with a hit tool proven in major college competition. 80 speed and the ability to use it. I will be surprised if he is available at #5. It could make for an agonizing decision.
  8. How can you have three plus pitches but not a knockout tool?
  9. That resonates because that is what we all want. We just differ as to how to play for the future. Some would say if we were playing for the future last year, Hicks would have started the year in AAA. Many of us would not have subjected Hicks to so much futility in the majors last year -- that is, demoted him earlier. I put no stock in Spring Training small sample size. I would send Hicks to AAA because that's what his track record indicates. I'm guessing the Twins decision will be based on the health and spring trainings of Presley and Mastro. Then again, Mastro is not on the 40-man roster. Depending on the nature of his call up, I would start him 50-90% of the time. I would bat him 9th because I think he will be a better hitter than Florimon and would rather have him batting before the top of the order. He might become a lead off hitter or a #6 or #7 hole hitter. We'll see what his future is. Is he more like Jaque Jones or Ben Revere or Torii Hunter or Joe Benson?
  10. In a 6-man bullpen there is no place to hide Deduno, Worley, or Diamond. Swarzak and Duensing are better at their respective roles. In a 7-man bullpen the only way to keep Deduno, Worley, or Diamond is as a redundant long man instead of a more versatile reliever like Tomkin or Pressley. An 8-man bullpen guts the bench. Here's to hoping that Deduno, Worley and Diamond all sparkle this spring and the Twins get something of value for at least two of them. Let attrition or trade make a place for Gibson, Meyer, May. There should be a poll as to who we prefer making the 25-man roster -- Parmelee or Kubel. I would vote for Parmelee.
  11. Strictly a LOOGY. Not at all Diamond like? Do we have another in Rochester? Career MLB stats in very small sample in 38.1 innings .194/.293/.306/.598 vs LHB .316/.396/.564/.960 vs RHB
  12. How about using him to replace Alex Presley on the 25-man roster? If Aaron Hicks pushes him to the bench, you then have a super utility player.
  13. Wouldn't Morgan be an upgrade over Presley? It would only cost a little more money on a 1-year contract and help bridge the gap to Buxton.
  14. Teams know what Willingham can do offensively and defensively. The objective should be to keep him healthy.
  15. FWIW, a partial scouting report from Long Live Shea Stadium blog dated March 10, 2011-- just the bad part since Thrylos handled the Good. The Bad: The biggest knock against "Big Pelf" is that he can't strike hitters out, and last year was no exception. His K/9 rate was below 5, and his career average is 5.1K/9. He simply doesn't have the ability to miss bats, and hitters only swung and miss 6% of the time last year; as a reference, league average was 8.5%. Still throws his fastball a lot (69%), because his slider is still a below-average major league pitch, and even though he added and threw his split finger last year (14% of the time), it wasn't a league average pitch. He started to throw a curve-ball a little more last year (5.5%) and that was a decent pitch for him. http://longlivesheastadium.blogspot.com/2011/03/scouting-report-mike-pelfrey-2011.html He's not going to master the change up at age 30. Perhaps he will master the splitter. Except the Twins eschew the splitter.
  16. I don't think anyone is arguing that the Twins would be better off looking at high school talent over and above college talent in the 2014 draft. They are just interested in the BPA' date=' whether the P means Player or Pitcher. I don't think you can be convinced. Do you know how many MLB starting pitchers drafted after 1965 have made the Hall of Fame? One -- Bert Blyleven. Does that mean we should wait until the 3rd round to draft pitchers and then draft them out of high school. Of course if you followed that author's logic, you would draft position players, not pitchers. And you would be biased (or in your words prejudiced) towards high schoolers. Now there is an apparent bias towards college starting pitchers at the top of the first round. That's because there is more maturity, more refinement, more success against a higher competition. In 2013 it was Appel and Gray. As of now, it appears to be Rodon and Hoffman. That doesn't mean if you are the Twins that you should be prejudiced in favor of a college SP at #4 or #5. As has been said, no one is complaining about Kohl Stewart. I think most of us would boo the Twins if they drafted the 2013 Beede with his poor control (lack of refinement). If he makes that refinement next year, the outlook would be different. That doesn't mean someone else would be wrong to prefer Kolech or Turner or Jackson or whoever they think is BPA.
  17. Most would bet on Correia in the opening day roster, whether they want him there or not. Based onsmall sample size, the Twins do not have much of a history of trading free agents mid-contract. I would bet they put Deduno on the 60-day DL. I think he would have to make the 25-manroster first, which means they would have to option someone first. Let Worley and Diamond battle it out in spring training. Hopefully they both shine and JR can flip onefor a building block. They are both somewhat fringie and coming off a bad year after elbow surgery. The thing is there is no better place to hidethem. Swarzak appears to be a better long reliever and most do not want him starting. I don’t think Diamond does not have the splits suitable for a LHP reliever. And wishcasting here, I hope the Twins go to a 6-man bullpen so they can have a 5-man bench with only 1 and a fraction catchers on it. If the Twins do go with a 7-man bullpen, do they need two long relievers? I don’t think so. I would rather get Tonkin’s feet wet. The Twins will probably option Tonkin and Pressly, then keep the Diamond/Worley runner up in the 7-man pen (unless the runner-up shines or flops in spring training). Of course, both Diamond and Worley can flop in spring training. I’m guessing Nolasco, Hughes, Pelfrey, Correia, and Worley. Gibson, Myers, May, Albers, and Johnson are ticketed for Rochester.
  18. Three out of six or seven relievers are LHP's. Given the nature of rotations, how often would the manager be able to schedule his LHP starters for teams with predominately LHB lineups?
  19. He knows he will make the team because he has been texting with Gardy. Once makes the active roster, his salary won't be minimal. Last year he only had 37 AB's against LHP's. And since when does Gardy platoon?
  20. He sounds like James Bereford (except Bereford can hit for average, at least relatively). My point is that Beresford is not on the 40-man roster.
  21. Where would you have drawn the line on Garza at the beginning of the off-season. Where do you draw it now, after signing Nolasco and Hughes? Garza would have been my top priority. I had targeted 4 yr / $68M. I could easily add a team option with $4M buyout.
  22. What was the forecast about Bill Smith's tenure? by Keith Law, I think. Something about brutal and short.
  23. Wow. Thorpe at 18, Walker at 17, Kepler at 16. Radically different than most lists. It will be interesting to see who you have in front of them.
  24. If he does those things, he's a front line starter assuming he can handle the innings. All he needs to do is improve his control. That might require simplifying his delivery, but I wouldn't want to take away from the plus things he has.
