  1. Chi doesn't drink any more. But she doesn't drink any less, either.
  2. I'd be on board with this idea as well. Start Santana every fifth game. That would be 9/16, 9/22, 9/27 and 10/2. Then the other five would rotate through in their usual sequence to cover the rest of the games.
  3. With Boras as his agent he's not likely to sign early. We'll probably have time to explore a trade involving Plouffe first, which I think is the proper path.
  4. From Wikipedia: Abraham Charles "Abe" Vigoda (/vɨˈɡoʊdə/; born February 24, 1921) is an American movie and television actor who appeared in The Godfather, Barney Miller, and Joe Versus the Volcano. Vigoda is best known for his portrayal of Sal Tessio in The Godfather and for his portrayal of Detective Sgt. Phil Fish on the sitcom television series Barney Miller from 1975 to 1977 and on its spinoff show Fish that aired from February 1977 to June 1978 on ABC. After mistaken reports of his death in 1982 and 1987, Vigoda has been the subject of running gags as to whether he is dead or alive. I must have remembered one of those mistaken reports because I thought he was no longer with us. And Sid was born in 1920. We should all be so lucky to function at his level at age 95.
  5. I suppose it's possible, but I'd like to see someone who has intimate knowledge of the technology discuss whether this would be easy or difficult to do on a consistent basis. My guess as a layman is that it would be extremely difficult. Multiple cameras would be required and the software would have to determine the exact loading point in a player's preparation to receive the pitch, which will be different depending on the situation and the pitcher. For example, compare a batter squaring to bunt against a knuckleball pitcher to the same batter preparing to swing away at a 98-mph fastball. Moreover, to make this work the system would have to be extremely fast to determine a strike zone for a pitch, load it, and then detect whether a pitch is in that zone. I'm sure there are even more issues that I'm not thinking of. I have a lot of doubt that it would be feasible.
  6. Playoff games are used except for two cases: When two and only two teams are tied for the first wild card berth or when two division winners have the same record. In those cases tiebreakers are used to determine which team has home field.
  7. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the idea of having a uniform strike zone regardless of a batter's height and/or stance. Why should a tall batter be penalized by having a larger strike zone simply because he's tall? A tall batter can probably hit a pitch near the upper boundary of a uniform strike zone more easily than a short batter, but a short batter can probably hit a pitch near the lower boundary of a uniform zone more easily than a tall batter. It would seem to me that it would more or less even out. My assumption is that the current definition of the strike zone was put in place because the batter's body was the easiest reference point to use in determining whether a pitch was high or low. If (or when?) electronic pitch calling is put in place a uniform strike zone would probably be necessary.
  8. I don't claim to know enough about managing to say whether Gardy was good at his job or not. But here's a factoid: During the 9 seasons from 2002-2010 he received more total manager of the year votes than any other manager during that period. That doesn't mean he was the best manager in baseball but it does mean that a lot of baseball writers thought he was pretty good.
  9. LEN III rated ballparks a few years back. I remember he had PNC 3rd, Target 2nd and Safeco 1st. I have only been to seven current major league ballparks. I think Target Field is beautiful but I'd have designed it with a slightly lower right field wall. Wrigley is not the worst but it has to be the most overrated. I've not been to Miller Park but a former coworker told me it was like sitting in a giant coffee can.
  10. Inflating radar gun readings? Hmmm. Do ya think the KC front office would want their pitchers to look better than they are for some reason? Improve the reputation of their pitching staff for example? Could this sort of thing really happen?
  11. What are you gonna buy us with your winnings?
  12. I would not be surprised if the radar gun at Kaufmann reads a bit high.
  13. Same reason he didn't pinch run Rosario for him the other night. Let me know exactly what that reason is if you ever find out.
  14. It depends on whether the fielders are being nonchalant or chalant.
  15. Wish there was a don't-like button to click.
  16. I'm sure Molitor would have challenged if it was clear. As I said, I think it was because there was no camera in the necessary position to show what Plouffe and Glynn saw.
  17. There must not have been a camera angle to show clear reason to overturn.
  18. Get Rosario in to PR for Torii.
  19. A number of years ago I found a passable imitation recipe on the internet. It's about the only beef meal loved by a member of my family who's nearly vegetarian.
  20. If I were in college and serious about a baseball broadcasting career I'd want to be able not just to pronounce Hispanic names properly but speak the language. Same goes for a playing career for that matter.
  21. I believe the standard is that a player should complete a play that requires ordinary effort. If Plouffe snags that ball it's not an ordinary play, so no error.
  22. There's Hunter's hit for the day. Might as well pinch-run Rosario now.
  23. Any major leaguer worthy of his uniform plays to win every time, but tonight we saw that there's a big difference between a 1-run game between two contending teams and a 1-run game between two teams not in contention.
