  1. I don't consider this a nit-pick. I think we should all use proper terminology. In MLB, the postseason is the correct terminology for the games played to narrow the ten-team field down to the World Champion. A playoff is the game or games required to break a tie after 162 games and playoff games are part of the regular season. This game is often referred to as game 163 because it's the 163rd game of the regular season for those teams. Also, playoff games are played only if one of the teams that are tied needs to be eliminated from the postseason. For example, if the Blue Jays and the Yankees finish the season tied for first place in the East Division with a record good enough to qualify for a wild card berth, then tiebreakers are used to determine who is division champion and who is the wild card team.
  2. Because of off-days, only 4 starters are needed for the postseason.
  3. Seth, just out of curiosity, in your humble opinion whom should the team remove from the 40-man roster to make room for Berrios?
  4. Does he have the stuff to pitch in the majors? Sure looks like it. Does he have the mental makeup to pitch in the majors? Sure sounds like it. Is bringing him to the majors now the best thing for his career? Ah, now THAT is the important question. It sure is tempting to put him on the major league roster but here are some reasons not to do it now. 1. He's pitched more innings this year than in any previous season, and more and more baseball people feel that too much throwing early in one's career is linked to the marked increase in TJ surgeries needed in this day and age. 2. He's always started, and the Twins have already had to put one starter in their bullpen. Asking Berrios to become a different pitcher may not be wise given his age and number of innings already pitched this year. Even though it would mean fewer innings something like that could throw a young pitcher out of whack. 3. He's not on the 40-man. This is not the best juncture to remove someone from the 40-man to make room for him. There are several players I'd DFA when the season is over but not now. I'm not saying he should be called up and I'm not saying he should not. But I think caution with this important player is prudent at this stage of his career.
  5. Has Graham been diagnosed with ineffectiveness of the right arm?
  6. I'm sure the Twins want to avoid a repeat of the extortion they were subjected to when they had to negotiate the Mauer contract at the worst possible time. I think the team will want to go big, long and early and have good a contract insurance policy in place in case of injury.
  7. Good point. Plus the reality is that managers can still pull strings from the clubhouse. On that point, I think that there should be some way to prevent managers from having any input once they're ejected. Like a penalty box. You do that, you go to the box, you know, by yourself, and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free.
  8. I've never set foot in a casino and I'm not a gambler, other than spending maybe 5 or 10 bucks on lottery tickets when the jackpot gets huge. But if I had been in Vegas last March I WOULD have put money on the over for wins. If memory serves the line was at 70.5.
  9. Minority opinion here. I still give Nolasco the benefit of the doubt. His overall performance has certainly been poor but there are two things to mention. One, the injuries. I'm inclined to think that his health was a significant contributing factor in the results he got over the last two years. Two, he has had a (small) handful of games where he looked very sharp. I know it's hard for some (or many) people to accept but I think he does deserve an opportunity in spring training and the early season to show us whether there's a chance. I'm not expecting Cy Young pitching but as many have said it doesn't hurt to have extra starters. We took a similar track with Pelfrey and wound up getting far more from him than many people thought we would. Trading Nolasco right now would be very unlikely to fetch anybody worthwhile. If one truly feels that trading a starter is the thing to do I think Hughes would probably generate the best net return based on the way things stand today. If Nolasco does wind up pitching well next spring I certainly would shop him at that time.
  10. I called the stadium and asked what time the game was scheduled to start and they said, "When can you be here?"
  11. 10-6 in the middle of the fifth, thus, game is absurd.
  12. Make it 788. The number is getting worked down.
  13. The thing about WPA is that a late-inning event has a larger effect on the number than an early-inning event. That's fine, because it's more important to perform well when it makes a bigger difference, but it does create an apples/oranges issue when comparing pitchers who almost always pitch in earlier innings to pitchers who almost always pitch in late innings. That's much less of an issue with comparing batters because they are much more likely to play the entire game. The other issue is that WPA for pitchers must be measured and compiled on a half-inning-by-half-inning basis, not including the WPA produced by his team's offensive half-innings. Measuring a starter's WPA from the beginning of the game to when a he is removed includes his own team's offensive performance during that time. I assume someone has developed a stat measuring WPA achieved as a percentage of maximum possible WPA. That would be a better way to compare starters and relievers.
  14. This point is well taken, but the argument for having a designated closer is that it makes for a better-managed bullpen. Pitchers have a better idea of the type of situations in which they'll be used and adapt to those roles. Not saying which way is better, just saying.
  15. I'm not going to spend the time to look back, but I'd bet it's very rare for a team to get to the World Series without at least one lefty in the 5-man rotation. (I'm not referring to the WS itself because teams usually go with three starters, or occasionally four.)
  16. In today's game this would have been dealt with calmly. Cubbage would have stayed on the base and Mauch would have requested a review. Replay would have overturned the call. Easy to see he was safe.
  17. Thanks for checking. And it's not an allegation it's a mathematical truth.
  18. There are 5 postseason berths, so the probabilities add to 500%. Think of it this way: when it gets to the point where 10 teams have been mathematically eliminated each remaining team has a 100% probability. Adding the probabilities gives a sum of 500%.
  19. I haven't reviewed these projections. But I'm curious about this: the percentages listed for each team should add to 500%. If that is not the case their methodology is flawed.
  20. This is not a prediction, it's a probability. (Although if the Royals are projected at 100% I'd say that does constitute a prediction.) An 8% probability means that there's about a 1 in 12 chance of the Twins qualifying for the postseason. It doesn't mean the projection is wrong if the Twins make it.
  21. It's not a good sign when one's emotional health is influenced by the performance of a baseball team. And it's not just you. I think all of us here suffer from that condition to some extent.
  22. It's not a projection or prediction or anything of the sort. It's just a comment that he has the talent to do it if many favorable things fall into place over the course of his career.
  23. Sunday, August 21, 2011. Thome and Rodriguez. There's no trickery there, but obviously it's more relevant because it involved our team. The last time before that: July 17, 1973. Aaron and Mays.
