  1. Even if we get a good return is it worth going through that just to put a 41-year-old reserve outfielder on the roster for one season? I think not.
  2. There's a fundamental principle in logic called Occam's Razor. In a nutshell, it states that the simplest or most obvious explanation is also the most likely one. As this applies to Mauer's statistics, the concussion is by far the simplest and most obvious explanation for the fact that he experienced a sudden decrease in his production immediately after it occurred. Aging is far less likely to produce a sudden change like this. The same would be true for maintaining a "lazy" training regimen (which has not been clearly shown to be true, by the way). Yes, this argument relies solely on coincidence. And the reason the argument holds up is because it's the ONLY coincidence. There was no other event at the time of the decrease in production as significant as the concussion. There was no other event even close to being as significant as the concussion. Does that make it 100% certain that the decrease in production was due to the concussion? Of course not. Am I open to the possibility that there is another reason? Of course. But I think it's very highly unlikely.
  3. Right now Houston is the team we need to catch. If they finish the season 6-6 the Twins need to go 9-4 to tie. I'll disagree a bit with Physics Guy. It could hurt that those three teams play each other. If those games get split about evenly among the three teams it will be more difficult for the Twins to finish ahead of or tied with two of them. Probably the most favorable scenario would be for Texas to sweep the other two and for the Angels to sweep Houston. Meanwhile, the Twins have 7 games remaining against Cleveland. Going 9-4 with no losses to Cleveland would be good. Going 9-4 with 4 losses to Cleveland gives Cleveland the opportunity to stay in the race. For all the teams still involved it's not just how many of the remaining games they win, it's also which games they win.
  4. 2016 is when the outfield of the future should become the outfield of the present. Four or five of these players: Arcia, Buxton, Hicks, Kepler and Rosario. And maybe Robinson to placehold for the first part of the season if one or two of them needs a bit of AAA.
  5. Are you current on your cable bill payments?
  6. Dave W got his Vegas money by knowing we'd do better than most people thought. Now if he'd just buy us all drinks with his winnings...
  7. Mike Trout is good at baseball
  8. Dude is 21 years old. He'll be fine. If you don't like calling people out then don't call people out
  9. Ooh moderator queen can edit her mistakes and pretend they didn't happen
  10. Did you learn grammar at KMart?
  11. I know you are but what am I? Takes one to know one
  12. Good play by the lazy guy at 1B
  13. I'm totally in favor of using him if he can help us out. I'd say it's a long shot, but it would be a heckuva story if he can pitch well at the end of this season. Or in the postseason!
  14. Actually, we don't know that. This is just a guess on your part. Every brain injury is different and you and I have no way to know. He may be fully recovered and just in decline, but my guess is that some effects of the injury are still present. Look at Corey Koskie--he never recovered fully enough to play again. As I said before, it took Justin Morneau 4 years to return to form.
  15. I'm not a neurologist. I haven't reviewed Joe Mauer's medical chart. And I think both statements are probably true for everyone who posts here. That said, I think it's more than just random coincidence that there was a precipitous drop-off in Mauer's offensive stats after his concussion. Players as talented as Mauer rarely experience that sort of change. It took Justin Morneau four years after his 2010 concussion to become Justin Morneau again. I think the concussion is BY FAR the most likely reason that Mauer's offensive production has dropped off during the last couple years. I very strongly doubt it has anything to do with his training regimen.
  16. From what I understand the opposite is true: Santana refused to be retained by the Twins. It goes back to what I said before--free agents choose the team, not the other way around. There were many media reports at that time that Santana wanted to play for a major market team. He forced the Twins to trade him because if they didn't they'd have received even less compensation than they did in the trade.
  17. Keep in mind, this is your guess, not a fact. I happen to think that this guess is incorrect, keeping in mind that that's also a guess on my part. However, check out the press conferences when top name free agents sign. The player almost always says that he chose a team because he wants to win. I don't recall a player ever saying he signed somewhere because that was the biggest contract.
  18. Especially now that PED testing is so much more strict.
  19. Getting an elite free agent is about much more than just offering a big contract. I don't know how many times I've said this, but free agency is the anti-draft. The player chooses the team. Elite free agents will get big payoffs no matter where they sign, so they will almost invariably sign with a team that they feel will have a good shot at the WS. When Greinke was a free agent before the 2013 season the Twins could have outbid the Dodgers by $10M a year and he still wouldn't have come here. At this point, however, I think the Twins are in a position where they could attract a big name.
  20. Buxton is level-headed. Gomez, is, well, not level-headed. That's the biggest difference between the two and it's just as important if not more so than the 5 physical tools.
  21. Better to try him out against the Tigers than against the Angels.
  22. I equate his performance now to be about what it would have been a year ago had he not lost a year of time due to injuries. For him to even be in the majors at this point is a success story. No-one should be worried at this very, very early stage.
