  1. I'm not sure it's that so much as who wants to invest in the infrastructure for a one year deal? That's why the court cases and Amazon swooping in at the last minute makes it hard. Chances are this will all end with Amazon negotiating a package with 10-15 clubs all at once as a package deal, not teams negotiating a bunch of one-offs with random streaming services.
  2. I assume they will be on, though I'm not sure when DirecTV's current agreement with BSN ends.
  3. They're not though. There is no contract, so nothing is in place. Bally's may WANT them to remain but the Twins are under no obligation to agree.
  4. It doesn't say that, but I tend to agree. There's no reason the blackout has to continue. It was an issue before because Bally had exclusive rights within Twins territory from the deal signed 10 years ago. But that deal is dead. There's no obligation for blackouts to continue.
  5. I'd much rather have Clevinger than DeSclafini for sure. Does he have options? If not and you can't flip him, it's always an option just to eat the $$ and be done if he doesn't have a good Spring.
  6. Another reason I don't love this is the DH spot isn't really filled. So sure Julien can play 2B, but who's the DH then? Larnach? At least now go out and sign someone like Carlos Santana for 1B/DH.
  7. I know the tool is imperfect, but in what world does a 33 year old reliever with one good ML season have a value of 7? Come on.
  8. Meh on the ML return at least. Given they're both arbitration eligible, you could have signed a couple FA's for similar $$ I imagine.
  9. At this point just sign Clevinger, Michael A Taylor and Carlos Santana (net of about $20 million) and trade Kepler. That leaves a payroll of ~$130 million which isn't unreasonable no matter the exact TV $$. Platoon Buxton/Kiriloff in RF or play Buxton in CF if by some miracle they're both healthy all year.
  10. I don't understand why a one year deal with Bally's is now unlikely? It still seems like the best short-terms solution. It's not like Bally's will refuse.
  11. This. Whatever deal DirecTV has with Bally's (let's say $4/subscriber) they likely have language that they get $2 of that back once Bally lost the Twins games. If Bally's gets the Twins games back, they probably have to renegotiate how much of that $2 they get back and if Amazon has streaming rights, it won't be the full amount.
  12. I would be surprised if Amazon would pay that much for only local streaming rights, and even Manfred has indicated they wanto get rid of all blackouts. For the teams Bally's had streaming rights for, there were no blackouts and I assume that would remain the same for Amazon. Ultimately if Amazon becomes the streaming home for all of MLB, MLB.TV becomes irrelevant.
  13. They're mainly bankrupt because Sinclaire massively overpaid Fox for the networks. Some of their contracts were probably money losers, but the Twins was one of the smallest and likely was profitable.
  14. I doubt this will happen in time for 2024. It seems they are likely to go back to regular Bally's for a year and offer streaming either via MLB or Bally's. I have to imagine Amazon would offer this as an add-on/stand alone. The majority of Prime Members aren't going to want to pay for it. If Twins go this route, I think it's extremely important they go back to having a package of over the air games on local TV (it's important they do this regardless.) There is a fairly large subset of fans who either can't (not reliable enough internet) or won't pay for this via streaming. They need to reach those fans if they ever want to see them a ticket or a t-shirt.
  15. Gardy talking about reliever Jose Mijares "he's in A shape"....
  16. The Bally contract ended at the end of the 2023 season, yes. And Bally's as an entity has pretty much said it's going to go out of business at the end of the next MLB season. While there is a chance the Twins will do a one year deal with them, if they do, there will be a streaming option either through the Twins or Bally's that will not have any blackout restrictions unlike last year.
  17. Because no matter who they negotiate a TV contract with, they're going to keep the streaming rights and sell them as a stand alone subscription. You will not have to subscribe to DirecTV/Cable in order to stream games online. Previously that was not the case.
  18. While we don't know details, it's basically a 100% certainty that there will be a stand alone streaming option for 2024 that no one will be blacked out from accessing (if they subscribe of course.)
  19. I'm not sure I follow you on this. Bally's gets a monthly amount per subscriber from every cable/satellite subscriber in the Twins territory that carries them (DirecTV/Comcast etc.) The last # I saw was there still 1.2 million homes with Bally Sports North, though I'm sure it's lower by now. They get anywhere from $5-10/month I've heard (DirecTV adds like $7 to my bill so I assume they get at least that much). That is the biggest chunk of their revenue (and the Twins make up about 40% of that value with the rest the Wolves/Wild/Other). The ad revenue from Twins games is a much smaller slice. Also, while Dick Bremer and Morneau etc. were/are paid by the Twins, I believe BSN was bearing the cost of equipment, camera crews, producers etc. I'm not 100% sure on that though.
  20. I'm not leaving it out, but how much ad revenue can you generate if your maximum audience is 500K people (assume 2 per home on average)? And even if you lower the subscription fee to $100/year, I'm not convinced you would 250K to sign up for it. You will still need to be available on OTA/Cable/streaming services in some form to as many people as possible. Otherwise you are going in the wrong direction on getting the games available more people.
  21. Conceptually, no. But I just don't think they would hit those #'s. They wont' get 250K people to pay $250. And you don't want your games only available in 250K homes. For all the "cable is dead" talk, Bally's was still in ~1.2 million homes in the 5 state area. 15 years ago it was in something like 2.5 million homes. That's what the Twins want to get back towards, not reduce it further. So they will have to negotiate with the carriers that currently carry Bally's to get a cut of what they were currently paying. And they will make what they can from streaming (I don't see them charging more than $100/year or $20/month max). And they should also return to having a package of games on over the air TV. What will they net from all of that? Probably something in the $20-$30 million range to start. Not nothing but a lot less than $55 million.
  22. Except this wasn't getting out in front of anything. If they had said nothing and just gone about the off-season the average fan wouldn't even know what the 2024 payroll is until it's mentioned in the Star Tribune around Opening Day. Sure some fans would have been mad when Gray signed elsewhere but that's about it.
  23. This would make sense if they were simply haggling with Bally's but there is no "TV company" to negotiate with. They will either be engaging in a long list of negotiations with individual cable/satellite/streaming companies to give them some % of what htey are currently paying for Bally's or they will take whatever Bally's is willing to offer them through bankruptcy proceedings. Either way, this is isn't likely to gain them much/any leverage.
  24. My vote is to sign/trade for a 1B. trade Kepler and then platoon Kiriloff and Buxton in RF on the hope that at least one of them can stay healthy (most likely Kiriloff) .
