  1. I don't think Minnesota State is leaving any time soon. As long as the WCHA has an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament there's no reason to go. Keep being the class of a weaker conference and punch your ticket for a national title bid every year. Jutting being let go and hiring of Hastings is the reason for the recent success. He's completely changed the culture of the program and is active in the community. I'm happy to see the arena is renovated with the amenities to keep attracting better talent, and filling up all of the seats with fans! There's the North Star Cup to look forward to, but I wish we could play more of these match ups instead of having it packed into one weekend...
  2. It's nice to look at it from a positive angle on keeping him down. I won't dive deep into the negative of Buxton being down in AAA that long. Let's just say if it's for negative reasons instead of positive, we have a much bigger issue to deal with.
  3. Let's hope TR ignores the service time dilemma and calls him up whenever he's deemed ready. IMO keeping Buxton down until mid July in order to push back his first FA year is not worth the cost.
  4. If I were Mauer I would take that deal in a heart beat. Bobby Bonilla has the greatest gig in America. Literally all he has to do is be alive and he makes $1 million a year from the Mets. Could you imagine the resentment Joe would get from fans if there was a Joe Mauer pay day similar to Bobby Bonilla? We just have to swallow this pill for 3 more years....ugh.... then it will finally be over.
  5. So fangraphs has his WAR as 3.8, and baseball reference has his WAR at 5.8. Not sure which is more accurate... Regardless I will stick with Fangraphs for the debate. Gray finished ranked #21 in WAR for all SP this season. Seeing some of the names surrounding his ranking, I would agree that he's not in the elite ace category. However, for the Twins, if they were to acquire him he would be immediately penciled in as the #1 pitcher in our rotation. And that's really what we're looking for at the end of the day right? An upgrade for our current staff? Trading away Berrios would be a tough pill to swallow right away, but I have my doubts that he would be close to the top 20 in WAR in 2016, maybe even 2017 too. If the Twins want to take the next step and be a 90+ win ballclub, it's going to take moves like this to improve right now. Otherwise there may be a step back in 2016 before there's a giant step forward for the organization.
  6. I know this take is a couple years old now, but the worst thing that happened to college hockey in the upper midwest is splitting up the WCHA. That was the premiere conference with must watch matchups nearly every week (minus Alaska Anchorage and Michigan Tech) It's too bad George Gwozdecky (old Denver hockey coach) had that big of an ego to start his own conference (NCHC) to ruin a good thing for fans. At the end of the day my favorite college hockey team (Go Mavericks!) drastically improved and are now on the national radar every year, but it's not the same without the Minnesota rivalries of the old WCHA.
  7. There are better odds that one of us TD members will win the lottery than the Twins signing Grienke. He's probably hoping the Yankees or Red Sox create a bidding war but why leave LA? They can pay any price to resign him.
  8. Barring a miracle win over the next 3 games against ranked opponents, I don't see the gophers winning more than 1 game the rest of the way.
  9. Shoot. Well, moving on then....
  10. I don't know if Cueto always does this, but it was impressive to see him alter his windup throughout the game. One pitch would be a slow leg kick holding in place, the next pitch no leg kick at all and a quick delivery. Really seemed to throw off the Astros hitters.
  11. Bautista's a free agent after the postseason. I have no knowledge if he will even test the market or just resign with the Blue Jays. If he does become a free agent, would you sign him? If so, how much? The armchair GM in me would offer 2 years $34 million.
  12. Read the bold sentence again. Did you mean that the Twins offered him that contract and Johan turned it down? Or that the Twins declined to match that kind of contract? I'm leaning towards the latter. The Twins organization has shown they can change their ways a little bit over the last couple of years with shelling out a more money than normal for mid level starters. But they are still proving that they will not shell out big money to obtain an ace level starter.
  13. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't. The Dodgers will be happy to fork over $30 million a year for him. The ownership uses that amount of money as toilet paper.
  14. The answer is zero. The front line starters we are all salivating over (Zimmerman, Price, Cueto, Grienke) will all command long term contracts at $20+ million a year. Price and Grienke I would not be surprised if they got close to $30 million a year.... Meanwhile, Sonny Gray is a controlled asset for the next 5 years, and has already proven to be a sub 3 ERA guy in the AL. I know there were comments in the Cueto thread (and not directed towards you Mike) that people were nervous trusting an NL pitcher with limited success in the AL. Well, Gray can alleviate those concerns!
  15. Sonny's Splits: 2014: Home - 115 IP - 3.60 ERA - 8.1 K/9 - .303 BABIP Away - 104 IP - 2.51 ERA - 6.9 K/9 - .256 BABIP 2015: Home - 105 IP - 2.82 ERA - 6.1 K/9 - .225 BABIP Away - 102 IP - 2.63 ERA - 8.6 K/9 - .288 BABIP He just looks like a solid pitcher no matter if he's pitching at home or away. No smoke and mirrors. In regards to your last paragraph, with that logic how would teams ever make trades? Any pitcher, even our beloved Berrios can get hurt any time. Sometimes you have to look at the players and make a judgment call. I can understand if you feel the price is too high, but it doesn't sound like you'd be too mad about the trade being made. We do agree on a couple of things though: Gray will certainly be better than Berrios next year, and Kepler is extremely over rated on these boards.
  16. Congrats to the Cubs! It's cliché I know but I jumped on their bandwagon for the playoffs and they are a ton of fun to watch.
  17. Absolutely. That's the level we hope that Berrios can get to, who may not ever achieve those stats. Gray's controlled until 2020 and already a staff ace. Pull the trigger on it.
  18. It's mind.boggling. that you even have to explain this.
  19. Let's take a look at all of the examples in MLB history where a 29 year old 3B transitioned to C: - uh..... - hmm.... - I've got nothing.....
  20. It's probably not the end all be all to be a high velocity guy in the rotation, because no pitcher can continually blow hitters away with nothing but gas for 7 innings. That's certainly where pitch location, pitch selection, and overall "stuff" comes into play. However, I'd like to see this study done with bullpens. I would think that's where velocity becomes a huge factor in their success. And that's still a huge problem that the Twins need to address.
  21. Hard pass. No need to see Matt Lecroy 2.0 behind the plate.
  22. What's the title of the book? I watched the movie on their opening weekend and really enjoyed it too. It also reminded me of the movie Apollo 13.... I agree Matt Damon wasn't an ideal choice, but he made the movie fun. "I'm going to have to science the s*** out of this."
  23. I would take Puig in a heart beat on this team, and agree that he's a perfect buy low candidate to acquire. Even with his recent down year that was hampered by injury, he still posted a .758 OPS. Better than any player the Twins threw out in the OF this season. Not to mention he may have the best OF arm in the majors. LA has Rollins, Kendrick, and Utley as pending FAs. One of those spots will be filled by Corey Seager. Maybe there's an interest in Dozier? Proposal: Dozier + (Thorpe or Gonsalves) for Puig. May take less depending on how far out of favor he's become in LA.
  24. The Gophers found their identity again in the 2nd half, which was very nice to see. They had a true freshman starting his 1st game at C in Tyler Moore who seemed to set the tone for the rest of the O-line. Leidner fortunately didn't have to do much this game, but he did make 2 nice TD passes near the goal line. This is exactly what the team needed when you're going up against a team that's lost 17 of their last 18 Big 10 games.. I'm excited to see what they can do at home vs. Nebraska before the real test begins.... vs. #12 Michigan @ #1 Ohio State @ #17 Iowa
  25. Another potential landing spot for Plouffe could be the Rangers. Adrian Beltre's a pending FA, and Joey Gallo rotated between 3B and LF... We seem to be locked into getting a C as the return for Plouffe, which probably wouldn't happen from TX, but there's others we could get back instead of a C.
