  1. It definitely wouldn’t be ideal to start the season without Bumgarner or Ryu. That said, there are a lot of ways to win. I don’t really care how they improve the rotation as long as they get it done.
  2. If both reports are deceptions, then I guess they cancel each other out and nothing can be true. The other possibility is that he has never heard of Minnesota and has no preference one way or the other. He’s exactly neutral.
  3. I meant "same old stuff" as in, most Twins fans would be absolutely losing it if they had traded for Cole two years ago only to watch him sign with the Yankees for mondo bucks. It would be Knoblauch and (sort of) Santana all over again. I think the size of the contract is obscuring the possibility that while Cole is undoubtedly an excellent pitcher, he might not have been the best starter on his own team last year. He could very well go on to pitch at an elite level deep into his 30s like Scherzer and Verlander, but he could just as well fall apart like Price, Lincecum, Santana, Jason Schmidt, Mike Hampton, and others. Remember that Johan lost in 2006 because the bats went ice cold and half the team forgot how to play defense. If your position was Cole, Strasburg, or bust, then you and I both knew you'd end up disappointed.
  4. You should probably get players’ names right if you’re going to complain about them. In general, your argument is an example of heaving the goal posts downfield. They need “impact pitching,” but suddenly Bumgarner and Ryu don’t count because they aren’t Gerrit Cole. And if they traded for Cole two years ago, they would have just lost him to New York. Same old stuff, right? So no matter what the FO does, you still get to critique their decision. Nicely done. Really, Berrios is the lynchpin in all of this. He’s 25 and has already put up multiple 4.0 RA-9 WAR seasons. If he stays healthy and consistent all year, he can be a legit top of the rotation pitcher.
  5. Ugh. No thanks if those are Bumgarner’s terms. Ryu seems increasingly like their best option. Hopefully they can get it done.
  6. I thought Gausman could be a good addition to the bullpen, but I don’t know if he would be the best person to spend that much money on. Oh well.
  7. Ohtani signed a rookie contract. Any team would have paid him the exact same salary. He made his choice primarily on location. I think that’s a bigger deal for any player than most fans appreciate.
  8. Well, a few fans probably make it pretty easy for him to feel this way.
  9. The trouble is that he’s 37 years old. There’s a pretty good chance he can’t be fixed.
  10. Meanwhile, Jayson Stark is guessing somewhere around 8/280. A slightly smaller AAV, and obviously a year less.
  11. Joel Sherman of the New York Post is guessing that 9/324 is the over/under. I think that’s approaching (blowing right past?) the point of diminishing returns. Cole is an extremely good pitcher, but the words “David Price” should haunt any GM who makes that offer.
  12. This is a nice honor. Maybe it will help to attract some free agents.
  13. I agree with this. I think it makes a ton of sense to strike a deal for Darvish. Honestly, I think they could probably get him for a couple okay-not-great prospects if they took on his whole contract.
  14. I, uh, don’t think Cole warranted that much money when Mauer signed his contract a decade ago.
  15. Good thing he won’t be their everyday catcher.
  16. Agreed. Garver has had a pretty unusual career to this point. He came up late and his bat has gone way beyond what anyone thought it would be. And I think it’s unnecessarily stressful to worry about these small moves. They don’t need to improve on the bottom few guys on the roster. They need to maintain their depth and add to the top. This move maintains depth.
  17. The difference is that Garver was a prospect who by definition had some untapped potential. Clearly, the organization saw him as a potential starter. Avila was brought in for the express purpose of backing Garver up for one season. The winter meetings haven’t even happened yet. There’s a lot of off season left.
  18. You’re probably not excited because he’s a backup catcher. Who gets excited about a backup catcher?
  19. You mention Gray and Freeland—I’m wondering if a different Colorado pitcher would be available. I’m talking about German Marquez. He’s significantly younger than both with a much better track record already. He would cost an arm and a leg, but he’s young, controllable, and very good. He’s the kind of arm the Twins should be targeting. It’s probably not a very realistic idea given that the Rockies just extended him. Just thought I’d bring him up. I mentioned Snell in a different post, and someone else mentioned he’s apparently steamed at the Pham trade. I’d give up a top prospect for him.
  20. The current alternative is Austudillo. Yes, this move made them better.
  21. Well for one thing he’s not Korean, so you’re lumping different Asian players together by obscuring that pretty huge difference.
  22. Right. I forgot 2006 was Liriano’s surgery year.
