  1. Why does anyone still believe the Twins when they say there is a competition for a starting job?
  2. Milone needs a quality defense to make his fringe talent look good. He doesn't have that.
  3. So no Meyer, no May, no Sano, no Buxton, no Rosario, no Polanco. None of the kids making it. Not even one. No surprises. So far, this roster looks even less exciting than it did last year.
  4. It's going to be another 'wait till next year' kind of season.
  5. A almost 40 year old SHOULD be seeing his defensive abilities drop. This isn't a shot, it's just how things normally go.
  6. So there's noise in the almost 40 year old's poor defensive metrics suggesting it's not a true evaluation but no noise in the defensive metrics of a guy more than a decade younger? The need to attempt to debunk the info telling us our soon to be 40 year old's defense is bad is getting a bit sad. I wonder of people will believe their eyes this year when they see if for themselves. Don't need metrics to tell us he's bad now. If he hadn't been a Twin previously I doubt the Twins even sign him and if they did, I doubt too many are defending his bad defense unless they just felt the need to defend every move Ryan makes, which happens I guess.
  7. listening to the game today the announcers are in midseason form. defending the milone selection, talking about how walks allowed is the worst thing ever, talking about no pitch counts in Bert's pitching days, etc.
  8. what a boring and uninspiring rotation yet again and our OF defense is going to be a joke yet again. are we really bringing our best 25 north?
  9. I'm not a Vikings fan so I have no strong feelings about the Packers.
  10. There's not a team in all of sports I dislike more than the White Sox.
  11. maybe it's because we keep having the 'projected year it gets good again' backed up? It was 2014, then it was 2015 then it's maybe 2016 and each time the praise for rebuild is strong? How long did it take Ryan to rebuild the first time he took over until we finally became competitive again?
  12. Fangraphs (along with Hardball times that is linked through them) has more intelligent baseball info and articles than ESPN, MLB and FOX combined. I'll continue to enjoy reading smart info from them for the foreseeable future as I fade farther and farther from the fluff pieces written/posted by ESPN, MLB and FOX and the Star Tribune.
  13. are you suggesting we take him at #6 if available?
  14. Well, his ERA was over 10 in August and only over 6.00 in Sept so I guess that's a significant improvement but hardly a sign of the light coming on. Barely averaged 5 IP in the last month, even though he averaged more than a K per IP in that time. Having said that, I want May in the rotation too.
  15. In fairness, Span and Revere were already gone before Hicks had his very nice ST.
  16. In fairness Carlos Correa is a stud as well.
  17. If Buxton comes up, it will be a September callup at the earliest. I'd guess May-June of '16.
  18. Fangraphs' positional ranking for LF is 21st out of 30. About Arcia the author writes: 'You know Oswaldo Arcia: swinger in 3-0 counts, hitter of long home runs, statuesque defender of the outfield grass. Yes, Arcia is a lot of fun to watch, and the Twins would be much higher on this list if it weren’t for him being so terrible with the glove. Nonetheless, Arcia remains a few (or more) plate discipline tweaks away from being one of the best raw power hitters in the game, as he managed to hit 20 home runs in just 103 games during 2014. He’ll probably always be terrible on defense, pulling his WAR down, but the offensive upside is tremendous.'
  19. Since you mentioned it though. Fangraphs' positional rankings has the Twins at 27 (out of 30) for RF. About Hunter the author writes: 'In one sense, bringing Torii Hunter home for a curtain call in Minnesota is probably good for business. The fans will enjoy it and Hunter and Twins seem to get along pretty well. But in another sense, it will make for some very annoyed pitchers. Hunter has some life left in his bat, but Jason Heyward could probably out-defend Hunter if he had to use his cap instead of a glove. And this isn’t just the metrics talking (-28 DRS, -22 UZR since 2013), I watched nearly every inning he played while in Detroit and I was constantly explaining to my newly adopted dog that most teams have right fielders that can get to routine fly balls.' P.S. this ties into Arcia since Arcia had to move from RF to LF.
  20. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/oswaldo-arcia-and-the-relentless-3-0-hack/ Fangraphs article. 'Oswaldo Arcia and the Relentless 3-0 Hack.'
  21. I couldn't help myself. Just a little bear poking. I DID put a smiley :-)
  22. Hard to make the players believe defense matters when Ryan signs a soon to be 40 year old, who has seen his defense drop like a stone the last couple years, to be his starting RF :-)
  23. So Pelfrey wasn't one of the three worst at far as pace goes? Haven't we heard about how slow he is in like every start since he's been here?
  24. Morneau's issue in '05 was his inability to prepare for the season due to his overwhelming horrible luck with health in the offseason leading up to it. Dude had everything, one right after the other. And as if his offseason hadn't been bad enough, he got hit in the head in April. His '04 in limited time was very good and his '06 was an MVP year. And Morneau also never struck out more than 94 times until 2012. The time he had 94Ks was during the aforementioned '05 season and he had almost 550 PAs that year. Arcia had 127Ks in 410PAs. So that's 33 MORE Ks in around 140 LESS PAs. I don't think Morneau was doing the same as Arcia.
  25. Mauer had 146 PAs with RISP last year. He hit .290/.466/.467 (OPS of .933) He walked 37 times and K'd 26 times. In other words, he really stepped up with RISP as opposed to when there weren't RISP. He had 241 PAs with men on bases. He hit .285/.419/..404 (OPS of .823). Only walked 46 times, striking out 47 times. In other words, he did pretty well with men on as well. All of this seems pretty darn good. He didn't do well with bases empty.
