  1. Our pitching staff doesn't strike people out. Lots of ball in play and lots of guys on base. It's no surprise his fielding counting stats are high due to opportunities.
  2. because something works for one guy doesn't mean it will for others. Additionally, Brantley was never as successful as Mauer has been with Mauer's approach either. Not even close. I'm not sure the comparison means anything. And, you know, Brantley has ONE year of success like that offensively.
  3. someone should break out the freedom of information act on their arses :-)
  4. Yeah, since he wasn't getting the pitch he likes to pull a HR (because the scouting report was out), he was working counts. Walks aren't just about the pitcher doing something wrong. Batters play a part in their walks as well.
  5. It was in Schoenfield's Sweet Spot, but it was Christina Kahrl who wrote the article: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/54202/picks-to-click-breakout-pitchers #9 This may not be as easy a case to make, but he is a prime example of what has become an organizational type for the Twins, a huge strike-thrower who pounds away low and outside and keeps his infield busy, sort of a bigger version of Scott Erickson with even better command. As ESPN Stats & Info’s Mark Simon tweeted earlier this month, Gibson kept some pretty extraordinary company last year, tying for second in the majors in starts with seven or more innings pitched and no runs allowed with six. If the Twins’ infield defense jells this year, he’ll stay on that list.
  6. I think long term Buxton may have something to say about who mans CF in the long term:-)
  7. James is a legend in advanced metrics and the people who continue on and expand in the field rightly give him respect; however, the idea that because he was at the top of the game in the 80s means he's right every time he complains about someone else's theories seems odd.
  8. All I'm saying is this. The Twins drafted Stewart really high. I doubt they would openly say 'we wish we would have been able to get Kris Bryant but he was gone and we were happy to have Stewart still there.' I don't imagine the Stewart camp would take too kindly to that. Some mock drafts had Kohl as the 3rd pitcher that would be drafted. I was super high on Bryant anyway, I thought he was an easy call. Then again, I was high on Pedroia too and he got passed on by every team but Boston (and by the Twins six times in one draft :-) Cubs were smart, they obviously had him higher than some. They got the right guy. I have a Cubs fan at my work and he was hoping for Gray at first. After telling him about Bryant he changed his tune and was excited when they drafted Bryant.
  9. To OBP or not to OBP: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/55947/brandon-phillips-and-joey-votto-disagree
  10. Mauer should regress. I'd guess a minimum of 125 wRC+ and wouldn't be surprised if it was in the 130s or even the 140s.
  11. I would never root for the Twins to lose.
  12. what else would he say? and, to be honest, if it's true that's sad. I like Stewart, but Bryant should have been an easy call.
  13. We saw some of that in the 2nd half. Dozier just raised his OBP.
  14. Love me some Dozier. Nice article!
  15. I think as we see Mauer getting farther away from his concussion symptoms, he'll be more like himself. Guy posted a WRC+ in the mid 120s in the 2nd half (and an OPS over .800 in the 2nd half). He had a very good 2012 and a very good 2013 before he got hurt and I doubt he's just dropped off the face of the planet in such a short time. His hitting profile doesn't suggest he would.
  16. Teams don't normally pass on best player available no matter what they think they may have in the system. Twins likely would have drafted Kris Bryant and then figured out who could actually play there and have the other play somewhere else. And looky looky, Bryant is MLB ready now. Cubs were smart and got him and passed on pitching with that pick even though they needed pitching too. Smart move.
  17. 2015 Positional Power rankings. Twins #9 at 2B. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-positional-power-rankings-second-base/ 'The surprising thing about Brian Dozier in 2013 was his power. It was only natural to wonder if he could maintain it into 2014, and sure enough, he did. In 2014, then, the surprising thing about Brian Dozier was his plate discipline, and now we get to wonder if he’ll keep that up too. Dozier posted a top-15 walk rate among qualified batters last season, completing a three-year transformation from “no power, no discipline middle infielder” to “some power, no discipline, average second baseman” to “good power, good discipline, solid starter.” Then there’s the underrated part of Dozier’s game — his baserunning, where he was bested only by Ben Revere and Dee Gordon last season. The forecasts expect a good deal of regression from Dozier, most notably in the on-base department, but Dozier’s already fooled everyone the last two seasons, so who’s to say he won’t make it a third in 2015?'
  18. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/brian-dozier-twins-agree-to-a-safe-contract/ Fangraph's take on the Dozier contract.
  19. I liked how Dozier adjusted to the pitchers' adjustments in the 2nd half. If he can maintain the kind of OBP he had in the 2nd half, that'd be nice.
  20. Are we thinking that slash-line is good, though? OBP of .290.
  21. You think Arcia could be going to Rochester or are you talking Vargas?
  22. I hope a GM considers all the players as assets from a business standpoint. Right offer comes along, you have to seriously consider it even if you never really planed to trade the guy to begin with. Contracts like that will likely see offers coming if he keeps perfroming the way he is. He'd be a low cost guy producing at a high rate and worth a good return.
  23. If it didn't, I would be disappointed. Not that I want him gone, because I don't, but that they didn't consider how well they had set up a trade situation if they wanted to pursue it. I have pretty much zero doubt he'll be well worth what he gets in the next four years.
