  1. I think even the big boys will need the Phillies to eat some money if they want any quality prospect.
  2. Phillies are going to have to eat a good chunk of Hamels contract if they want any type of quality prospect in return.
  3. His defense was very good last year as well. Maybe it went unnoticed for whatever reason by some, but I was praising Plouffe huge strides on defense last season and this offseason as well. I like this part, '“At shortstop, where I played primarily, you gotta to go get the ball,” Plouffe explained. “At third base, if you are cutting your angles off that way, your range is going to be cut down dramatically. It was learning how to go laterally to the balls and learning the timing and a lot of things that go into it. I know it is fielding the ball and throwing over to first but that’s not how it is. There are a lot of different nuances you have to pick up and that took a little bit of time for me to figure out.” I still contend that it took the organization way too long to figure out he couldn't play SS at the MLB level. If they had figured that out much earlier, they could have transitioned him to 3B earlier in his pro career and he could have been an above average fielding 3B sooner.
  4. Love this post (though your math seems off, not sure you came up to 100% there). Kudos on the Nobel peace Prize!
  5. That's pretty much exactly how I like to use the metrics. Great defender, above average defender, average defender, below average defender, horrible defender. Does it matter if one guy is 19th or 18th? Would I want to get into a heated debate on whether the #18 guy was really better than the #19 guy? No. It's best used to put the player into a grouping of similarly skilled players. But all this is pretty off topic, the discussion on metrics in general as opposed to talking just about Hunter, as ChiTown has already mentioned. Though I like how you threw Hunter in there...good call.
  6. gunnarthur, some info. 'Until early 2013, it used to be that another significant difference between the two systems was that each calculated Replacement Level differently. That has since been changed, and both sites now calculate replacement level the same way: This new unified replacement level is now set at 1,000 WAR per 2,430 Major League games, which is the number of wins available in a 162 game season played by 30 teams. Or, an easier way to put it is that our new replacement level is now equal to a .294 winning percentage, which works out to 47.7 wins over a full season. As a result of the differences listed above, rWAR values typically come in lower than fWAR values, meaning a 6 rWAR is more impressive than 6 fWAR. But it’s worth noting that the two systems are more alike than they are different, and that their different calculations should be viewed as a feature, not a bug.' http://www.fangraphs.com/library/war/differences-fwar-rwar/ Also, this year, Fangraphs has pitchers who create infield popups as a skill, so those cosnsitently good at that will have their WAR helped as well.
  7. ideally. though I wouldn't bet money on that type of player being targeted
  8. Yeah, if we're lucky, Ryan can trade Sano for a quality top of the rotation type pitching prospect like he did when he traded Span....
  9. I've been a huge supporter of Mauer due to his abilities, but even I am starting to wonder now if we are ever going to see the old Mauer with the bat again. It's sad to think someone with his abilities has become so average so quickly from when he was still doing well (right up until he got his concussion).
  10. "I didn't want to leave the Twins," Hunter said. "I just felt like they were ready to leave me. They thought I was too old to do a five-year deal." Hunter rejected the Twins' three-year, $45 million offer in August. Three months passed without a new proposal.' http://www.startribune.com/torii-hunter-i-didn-t-want-to-leave-the-twins/11923236/
  11. He went 3-1 in his last 5 games in 2006 and in the two games where he didn't get a win, he gave up 5 ER total. Overall, the Twins went 27-7 in games he started that year.

  13. The creators say it takes 3 years to see what that players true ability is (last three years more important than 10, 15 years ago), but they don't say a year's worth of data is irrelevant to what they player did THAT year. That STILL happened. In this case, what we have is a metric, DRS, that has shown a steady decline in defense going on three years now on a guy about to hit 40. Which, you know, should be expected. I guy his age should be expected to have declining defense and I'm not sure why saying that is a bad thing.
  14. I love Jamie Hersch...
  15. He's on a roll with the bat and that's nice to see. Hopefully it continues. But we're about 20% into the season, so we will see how it goes. I'm not sure how many people predicted him to be a disaster with the bat, considering he was about average for a RF last year in that regard. There's more to the game than offense though.
  16. exactly. no one is doing that. If the results were completely off from what a player had done the last couple years, it'd be odd to use, but if it's just a continuation of the trend the player has had the last year or two, it's a lot harder to throw it out as irrelevant.
  17. not only that, but also looking at everyone else who plays the same position and comparing them.
  18. I look forward to seeing Correa in the majors.
  19. Dozier going to college EXPLAINS their debut age differences. Arcia signed in 2007 and made his debut in 2013. Dozier signed two years later (in 2009) and debuted in 2012 (one year earlier). When you sign someone that young, they are very likely to come up quicker than most guys who went to college even if the college guys are somewhat fast tracked. But yeah, patience with Arcia's bat is a good idea. His defense though, that's an issue that isn't likely going away.
  20. depends on if the person applying them knows how to do it properly as opposed to just trying to find a way to invalidate them.
  21. Dozier went to college.
  22. yeah he has. again, this is why the eye test stinks,. different people seeing different things.
  23. comparing offensive performances of middle IFs to corner OFs is kind of odd.
  24. Yeah, didn't he also bat cleanup a couple times already too? And 5th as well? I'm done trying to figure out Molitor's lineups.
