  1. I would guess he initiated zero. Probably because the modern front office doesn’t consist of one person sitting in his office tabulating all 6000 players in professional baseball and all their different scouting reports looking for a diamond in the rough. Between numerous scouts, managers, interns, coaches, assistant GM’s and the top brass. He probably has almost nothing to do with the whole scope of any single trade at all. Exactly just like any move made by any large corporation ever.
  2. Exactly! He’s a pitcher and came up having to based on lack of secondary stuff. Now he’s got the stuff and uses it to his advantage. If he can make it through the season I believe he’s the top guy on this staff by next October. Maybe his usage goes up. Maybe it goes down. Depends on what is working in game. What’s working against certain lineups or hitters. How the league adjusts to him and how he counters the league. Dude is smart and pitching savvy.
  3. Hard NO!!! Yes the metrics are good. Yes he probably wants this and yes the Twins might entertain this. It may have worked for a few guys last year around the league. Yet it’s a hard no. This screams Terry Ryan regime messing with a guy who just needs to take his role and improve himself based on being a late inning stopper. If you ramp his innings up in spring trying him out as a starter does that limit his effectiveness come august and September? Does it expose injury stresses beings he hasn’t started in years? Idk. Just seems like an experiment that doesn’t need to happen. Especially when you’ve got a bunch of depth knocking at the door coming through.
  4. I get that with Prielipp. Would be tough but dang that fastball/slider combo out of the pen! Shutdown 8th inning lefty would be nice to have as well. I’d almost want that more at this point.
  5. Agreed! Even with Kansas City, Cleveland and Detroit all looking to compete there’s one thing they don’t have that Minnesota does. Pitching. It’s their strength. If the offense can muster 3-5 runs a game and the bullpen can just not blow every lead the Twins will be there at the end. Keep the pitching for now. Use it to load up at the deadline.
  6. Yeah, the windows open. They’ve got proven vets. A solid core and soon to be gushing in controllable young pitching. If the window was closed they would be shopping the vets which they are not doing. They’re not rebuilding while the Pohlads are trying to sell. Period. Castro, Lewis, Jeffers, Paddack and Vazquez. That’s your trade group.
  7. If we’re trying to find a catcher I wonder what it takes to pry Jefferson Quero from the Brew crew? He would be a perfect candidate to pair with Jeffers for a year and then trade Jeffers next offseason. With William Contreras entrenched in Milwaukee for a few more years maybe we can flip a few guys to obtain a stellar defensive young stud and develop his bat splitting time with Jeffers.
  8. No on Josh Bell and no on Bieber and Tim Mayza. I don’t think Lewis signs that contract. If you can save $17M I believe you’ve gotta go for Goldy. 2 years for $25M with a mutual option. I’d rather take the risk and pay $12.5M to Goldy than pay $7M to a guy who hasn’t hit at all since 2022. Also, if I’m trading Castro to the Yankees I’m asking for young guys. Not an old guy who’s mediocre at best. I do what I can to get Will Warren and no messing around. Slot him into the bullpen and let the fastball tick up and that elite slider play up. He also has an average changeup. With the slider and changeup I believe he’s more effective against lefties than Mayza based on his metrics. Maybe you can ask for the throw in being Edgleen Perez or Engelth Urena. They’ll hopefully be about ready when Jeffers becomes a FA. Especially if you plan on Stallings and Camargo filling your catcher depth for a few years. As far as Bieber. I’m out. He’s struggled to stay healthy lately and I’d rather stick with the young guys. There’s depth there that’s cheap with upside. I’m not committing 2 years and $21M to this guy. As far as Lewis, I’m not sure he signs that deal. I think he tries to establish himself this year as a star and makes the Twins invest in him next offseason following a top 10 MVP season. Or he gets injured again and he takes the Twins “Buxton” incentive laden deal. Great article and very realistic though. Love these articles!
  9. I think you need to find a team who needs a 2B or a left fielder. That’s the matchup. I think you could lure Toronto and the Yankees into a trade here. Maybe Houston as well if you can sell him as a LF.
  10. I think you try to catch Toronto trying to bolster their roster for one final run with Bichette and Vlad. You package Castro and Paddack to Toronto for Jake Bloss and Kendry Rojas. Two prospects who the twins can work with and contribute this year. Maybe a stretch but that’s my offer to get things rolling. Offers salary relief but still guys who can contribute day one possibly.
  11. Yeah and you get nothing for him when you could get something.
  12. Agreed, only I don’t want Mayer or Bernardino. I want Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel and David Sandlin to start things. The throw ins can be figured out from there but that’s the beginning of a Lopez trade with Boston.
  13. Terrible article. Regurgitating NY media and thinking it makes sense is asinine at best. I give you this Nick Nelson, it’s driving people to your article which is exactly what Joel Sherman was trying to do for his. Touché sir at playing the outrage game!
  14. Exactly! After all this talk about payroll in what universe are we expecting them to A.) get anything back worth putting on the field and B.) signing another group of free agents worth $37M that performs better than an all star, premium defensive shortstop? That’s a huge gamble on the FO side. I just don’t think trading Correa helps them now, helps the Pohlads sell this team or helps them in the future. I don’t see the play here and we’re all being duped by New York baseball writers. Wake up people! The Correa signing is what you all wished for the last 30 years!!! This isn’t MLB The Show where your trade a high priced 30 YO for 5 top 100 prospects. Live in reality.
  15. I agree that if they were able to get value for Correa that trading him might make sense. The only thing is is that the owners weren’t trying to sell a team for max profit. Trading away the face of this team might make sense. But it looks bad after just signing him. Unlike Burns who had only one year at $15.6 million left Correa has another 4 years and $130M+ left. Two different situations. Also, does everyone really think they’re gonna spend that extra $37M this year? Or $32M the next? That’s delusional. Also, who do they sign? From this years FA class? I’d take my chances with the 30 year old star shortstop who is the legitimate leader of this team. I think it would be a “classic” Twins mistake to trade him now.
  16. Typical media talking head trying to drum up a story for the New York readers to consume in a quiet period. Both New York teams were close and the little ole twins collapsed. Let the big vultures pick the meat from the wounded animal. A good GM listens to all offers for a player. To a GM every player has a price. Whether he’s signed to a 1 year $1M contract or a 10 year $500M contract. The GM is always looking for value. The owner dictates starting the franchise on fire due to optics. If they trade Correa that signifies a rebuild. In which case you trade everyone else too. Also, if that happens the Pohlads probably need to significantly lower the asking price. If you trade Correa at this point you’re all of a sudden selling a rebuilding asset which will garner less money. It might be smart for Falvey. Would be disastrous to the Pohlads. I’m trying to point out the difference between the PBO side vs the business side. Correa is an asset of the business side. He signifies that the franchise is competitive. If you trade him it signifies the club is uncompetitive and ultimately worth less. The Pohlads are trying to sell high. Not low
  17. He was also a rookie that only played 25 games in AAA before being called up. Also, he was dealing with a shoulder injury. After the first couple weeks the league adjusted. Typical of a rookie to struggle after a few weeks. He has an off-season to prep for MLB and hit the ground running. He’ll be fine.
  18. Well, they “might” want to trade Lewis to alter the teams window because A.) He’ll bring back a haul. A haul doesn’t mean a bunch of A ball prospects. It means a few high upside prospects and a few solid on the cusp guys. Guys that can help now or this season. B.) He’s not that young. He’s gonna be 26 come June. For reference Juan Soto just turned 26. Royce Lewis isn’t young by any means. That goes into my next point. C.) you can probably get 2 high upside prospects and a few immediate contributors for a guy who is slated to make something like $2M for one guy that maybe only has 5 peak years left if he can stay healthy. This helps your contention window stay open. Believe me I love Royce Lewis and he might be my favorite Twin. But baseball is a business and if you’re the Twins after that collapse you gotta look at all avenues to add more talent.
  19. I agree with your argument. It’s no way the Twins can model themselves. It’s a great way to win now but as we seen with the Yankees of the 2000’s these contracts will soon weigh them down. Betts and Freeman will soon be dead weight and Ohtani won’t be a $46M player forever and poses an albatross at some point when his skills start to diminish even mildly. I mostly made the argument of people constantly complaining that baseball isn’t fair and they should have a salary cap. I don’t see that happening anytime soon and baseball is such a unique game with a long season where spending the most doesn’t guarantee anything. I love how there are avenues for small and mid market teams to compete even though there are big discrepancies in spending. It also allows for your stars to remain with your teams with these big guaranteed contracts. Which is what hamstrings these big spenders when those contracts flip over. MLB is not the NFL and that’s what I love. For every Pirates or A’s team there are the Browns or Lions of the NFL. Sports aren’t fair but with the right system and group effort you can make a run like the 2015 Royals or the 2023 Lions. MLB is just balanced in a different way. That was my main argument. I mostly agreee with you!
  20. This is such a sad tired argument. What teams win the World Series? The team playing the best baseball. Period. Does money help? Yes. It helps you play the best baseball. It does not predetermine who wins the World Series. The Yankees held a top 3 payroll from 1999 to 2017. WS wins- 3. Not even an appearance from 2010-2023. 2 of those were from a core that was built in the early 90’s that got expensive by 1999. Not with extravagant FA spending. A top 3 payroll has won the World Series 5 times in the last 20 years. Boston was 3 of those. The dodgers had a top 3 payroll in 10 of the last 11 years and have won 2. The Astros had a top 3 payroll 1 year in the last 10 years. That was this year. What happened this year was the first year top 3 payrolls met each other in the WS in the last 25 years. Gotta play the game. The Twins can’t spend like the Yankees and dodgers. Do all the other 28 teams complain about it or do they find other ways to win? It’s professional sports. Not a T-ball league. If the Twins played baseball like the Yankees and dodgers then they would have been right there with them. Also, these two ownership groups happen to be the most aggressive as well. Willing to push all their chips into the team. They compete for WS championships. The twins compete for division championships.
  21. Well, when it comes to bullpens I believe you need as many high caliber arms as possible hoping 2-3 can be absolutely lights out. Although he hasn’t been himself he’s still elite. You need those guys and his salary isn’t exorbitant. Unless you’re getting 3 high end ready for MLB prospects how in the world could you entertain trading this guy. Maybe he fetches a kings ransom. If that’s the case then you do it. You don’t make this move for salary relief. That’s what Vazquez and Paddack are for. Not this guy.
  22. What is everyone’s definition of “depth”? Are we thinking MLB the show in easy mode where you can trade for 26 all stars and win 140 games or are we talking reality? You know, like a mix of all types of players. Some overachieve, some underachieve, some get injured. Some rookies step up and some underperform. A very small sample do exactly what you thought. Guys come up and have a great few weeks. Some flop and get sent back down. You know, like a real baseball season. I’m just wondering so I know what we’re talking about.
  23. Absolutely! About the same as Santana. He will cost more but he’s not far removed from an MVP and you sign him hoping you get the same magic or at least a another level better than Santana. It’s a move I think they could justify making and if you swing a couple other moves it’s one you could afford. Put him in there with Correa, Buxton and Lewis and maybe he steps up a bit from last year. Also, good defense. I think it’s about all we can hope for this offseason.
  24. Well, assuming these guys are bringing “all kinds of depth” is a stretch. Vazquez provided -.2 WAR at a cost of $10M as a part time player. That’s nice to have but not a luxury the Twins can afford. Paddack provided .4 WAR with a 5 ERA in 88 innings at $7M. When you have SWR and Festa at league minimum you’re estimating they can do better. These are the “prospects” everyone keeps clamoring about. Castro, yes he was a good player to have and a good diamond in the rough but he’s your trade chip. Maybe you can get your back up catcher and a BP arm or 2. There’s your depth or you can turn to the young guys to provide your bench. Guys like Kiersey, Hellmann and Camargo. Who’ve put up decent Milb numbers. Also, you clear his expected $6.2M salary. It’s nice to have guys like Vazquez, Paddack and Castro but at $23M when you’re a team looking for payroll space it’s not feasible to improve. You wanna just run it all back? Also, who’s your primary 1B in your scenario? Miranda? Kiriloff? An aging Santana?
