If they are close at the deadline you gotta go for it. Too many times we waited in the 2000'sfor our star prospects to come up and we ended up with 2011 and we all know the story from there. I admire the Royals way of thinking. They have no farm system left but they have 2 WS appearances and one ring. And sure as hell theyre looking to buy right now when everyone thought they'd be sellers this season. Got to strike while the iron is hot. At least set yourself up for the near future. No need to sell the farm but you don't need every prospect either.

Article: Twins Throw Curveball With Draft Strategy
FargoFanMan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The one thing I like about this draft is there seemed to be a plan. Not just based on scouting or analytics but the combination. Twins drafts have always seemed to be behind the times and purely based on scouting. That's fine but the analytics will find you guys that have the upside you're looking for I think. Love Enlow. His stuff is electric and he has lots of room to grow. Very good pick. -

A crafty lefty. Not impressed. Need these guys but we have plenty already. Ok we've saved some money now. Time to use it on some HS projection before we get too deep here.- 352 replies

Article: Twins Draft Blayne Enlow, Seven More
FargoFanMan replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I love this pick. Seems to have the high end projectibility with some growth. Adding a few ticks on the fastball and refining a changeup. Curveball is there already. Watched a few videos and it looks nasty. Fastball looks to have some good movement especially if he can add some velocity to it. With this pick I'm understanding the strategy a bit. I like this pick and I think a few things happened yesterday that turned the course towards Lewis, Rooker and Leach. I wish there would have been another pitcher in that first group of 3 but I'm good with all the picks so far.- 352 replies

Why Minnesota Must Trade Brian Dozier
FargoFanMan commented on jtkoupal's blog entry in Blog jtkoupal
I compare this to a knoblauch trade. The team isn't in as dire need as that team was but it needs to be a changer. We have no one else who can bring back what we need. The johan trade was not that dire. We had pieces then and were close. Just not the money at the time. I think the FO sees this as a kick start to contention in that we need to stockpile pitching to go with our young hitters. -
Article: Twins New Front Office Off To Strong Start
FargoFanMan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Strong start? Only compared to the previous regime perhaps. This is what a front office in 2016 does. Am I happy about the move? Absolutely! Let's just see what happens in the coming weeks. Hopefully a dozier trade for pitching prospects and a few tricks from their sleeves maybe. That would be a strong start. Let's see what you boys got!- 96 replies

Article: Turning Trevor May Into Andrew Miller
FargoFanMan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
May should never have been a reliever this year. For a team with the worst everything in the pitching categories it boggles my mind why we are even talking about this. -
Article: Arizona's Cautionary Tale
FargoFanMan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You missed my point. Obviously you should be the twins GM. You would take right after good old Terry Ryan at totally missing what is right in front of you. Who cares about payroll! Name me one $200M free agent who was worth the contract and didn't hamstring the team 3-5 years later who was or is worth the multi millions he makes. I would gladly give up prospects to win. No question. When the team needs a boost to make a run. Prospects and free agents are the same in my mind. Almost every time they never live up to expectations. How many times in the 2000's did the twins do nothing at the deadline? More times than not waiting for someone who was injured to come back to give a boost. They did nothing. No pitcher to pair with Johan. No player to replace an injured Morneau. Never. They never parted with prospects. Where are these prospects now? Obviously they are having all star seasons for the twins. That's why we are where we are. payroll should be for signing our young stars long term. Payroll should be for taking on a good player in a trade to help us push through. Payroll should be for signing a solid role player to fill a need. Never should we use payroll to sign an over marketed underperforming 30 something. Am I in the twilight zone here? Nolasco? Hughes? Does anyone remember these guys? Alright. Go ahead and rip me now. Before you do at the very least. Read what I've written and think about how you will rip me first. An intelligent answer will go a long way than simply saying, " but what about money?".... -
Article: Arizona's Cautionary Tale
FargoFanMan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't agree that the twins should go out and spend 200 million on a 31 or even a 29 year old FA pitcher. I do agree that when the time is right adding that veteran Cliff Lee/Sabathia type to help a playoff push. Trade those prospects to give the team some life late in the season rather than hope for a brighter future. The Twins never pulled that trigger in the 2000's and we never made it anywhere but watching the other team advance in the playoffs. I agree we should never commit a big contract to a pitcher but a trade in season when the time is right. I wish we had done that. The future never became brighter and here we are the better part of a decade later wondering where this team is even going. The prospects never led to anything and neither did the free agents. That's how it seems to go. -
I think buxton will get there. Might take a little longer though. He was definitely rushed. Probably should've been seeing his first taste of the majors this year. Classic TR. You think he would have learned from hicks but TR was brilliant at mismanaging a roster. I think you keep Buxton in AAA the rest of this season. Starts in AAA next year as well. If he's still putting up his typical numbers there in May. Then you bring him up. Enough of this up and down. The guy obviously struggles with plate discipline and pitch recognition.

What If Twins Never Signed Joe Mauer?
FargoFanMan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
It still bothers me that Joe gets all this blame. My belief that it's not as much Joe Mauer as it is the inept front office that was running things. You knew what Joe Mauer was and what he was going to be. What did the Twins do to help themselves? Nothing! They sat on their hands year in and year out at the deadline and in the offseason aside from 2 trades. The Shannon Stewart and AJ trades which were before Joe and paving the way for Joe. Too many times we did nothing to give the Twins the playoff push. A total bummer about Morneau and later Mauer but that's the complete illusion of greener pastures in the future when this team was waiting at the gate plenty of times. For what? Fielding a competitive team for a new stadium? Maybe that was it or maybe not. As for Joe. Maybe he should have had another year or two of premium catching time than he has had and same with Justin. That's sports though. You have to capitalize now and not be afraid of the future consequences to a degree. If it gets you a championship this year then what does next year matter? If the Front Office does its job you shouldn't have long spells of losing for more than a year or two. Not 5. Never was and still isn't Joe's fault. Period. -
Twins Could Have New GM By Mid-Sept., Tampa's Chaim Bloom A Candidate?
FargoFanMan commented on Tom Froemming's blog entry in Get to know 'em
I have to agree with Rosterman. if this article is true it seems the Twins and their search firm are targeting the right kind of people. The owners meetings should be used to interview maybe a top 5 or 10. From there maybe they get it down to 3. I would love to hear a hiring in September. From there you allow the new GM to take a look at the system and see what direction they want to go which I believe would be discussed in the interviews. The earlier the better! -
Article: A Tale Of Two Transitions
FargoFanMan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just boggles my mind why he is still being used in the pen. Could have easily been stretched out in Rochester his first rehab assignment. Probably would have been in the rotation by now gaining steam heading into next year. I don't think Molitor is incompetent as a manager but this is on a list of a handful of moves that make no sense to me. May is a starter! Why is milone still on this team? Someone needs to run this team like a 2016 business instead of a liberal congressional district -
I don't know how anyone could write off buxton. The guy may not be hitting yet but he's an elite defensive talent. Unless he continues to hit .200 you don't let this guy go. The only thing that worries me about buxton is the injuries. Defensively though he's probably top 3 and that makes up for offense. He'll come around. Might not challenge for a batting title but who cares. As a former pitcher you adore a guy like this. Makes your job easier.

Kepler's Power Is A Product Of Process
FargoFanMan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
He has always kinda reminded me of Morneau. Not for the power really but just the swing and contact skills. He always seemed to be launching line drives as well. A bit more power but Morneau in his better years was always a good average guy too. -

Article: Nunez Traded To Giants For LHP Prospect
FargoFanMan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A good trade. Got exactly what they were looking for. Pencil him in for 2017. If he can get himself into better shape and work on his mechanics to gain control of his delivery a bit more he's solid. And he's a lefty. Even if he eventually gets moved to the bullpen that's fine. We need those bullpen lefties as well. I'm satisfied. A couple more trades to go hopefully -
I would like to see us go after a Rays pitcher personally. If we could package a deal that gives Tampa some hitting another solid arm would help towards contending in 2017 and we surely don't need all of our 1B/OF/DH options wasting away on the bench or AAA. Not sure what a good package would be cause we have a million guys log jammed at those positions but put a couple guys there and a top 10 prospect and maybe we get a Matt Moore or a Odorizzi. Pair them up with Allen again and who knows. We just need another pitcher if the plan is to compete. The Rays seem to develop pitching and we need it. Seems like a trade partner that makes sense.

Article: Commitment Issues
FargoFanMan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Correct. Not a soul thought they would be that close but the fact is they were. 3 games would have got them into the playoffs. 3 games. From there on who knows what happens. The playoffs are a crapshoot and the hot hand can ride to the World Series despite who's playing first base or how so and so hits versus left handed pitching in night games colder than 60 degrees or whatever you want to throw out there. What I'm saying is time and time again the twins front office has failed to deliver or under deliver help to this team for a stretch run. Not just last year but many years. Specifically in the 2000's. Holding on to these prospects promising a better tomorrow when help is needed today. That's my point I am trying to make here. Last year was a fluke. I agree. But to go out and only get Kevin jepsen when another piece might have gotten us to the big dance at the expense of a couple of prospects who won't amount to much if anything is why the twins have not brought a championship home in over 20+ years. -

FargoFanMan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A few more breaks could have just been Dozier not falling off a cliff the second half. Perkins not tanking and getting hurt. Mauer having a typical Joe month or even a week or two. Any one of these combined with a legit trade deadline deal might have pushed them over the edge and gotten them in. Once in the playoffs anything can happen. It wouldn't have taken gutting the system. Just something more than acquiring Jepsen. TR has continually done this and left the twins short handed for a stretch run aside from Shannon Stewart ages ago. I'm not talking last year blue jays go for it but damn. I believe it's totally worth it to part with a few prospects to watch the twins winning in October. I'm not asking for a 100 win team. Just one that wins in the postseason. And one that isn't 3 years or 5 years away. If we keep waiting for that we'll become the Pirates or royals for 20-30+ years. No thank you. -
Good to see Luke Bard finally getting some innings in. Not sure if his numbers are solid but at least he's on the field

Article: Commitment Issues
FargoFanMan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I love it! The twins weren't a playoff team last year? Turns out they were right in the hunt. A couple of breaks the other way and they would have been in it. I hated the trade at the time because they should have went out and got more. The pieces they gave away for jepsen were never and still more than likely never figured into our plans. Especially if you are trying to win now. In baseball you should always be trying to win now unless you are where the twins are this year. In baseball as well as any other sport playoffs are so much about getting hot at the right time. Or as a former coach always preached it's about working towards playing your best ball at the end of the season. How often in any sport does the favored team or team with the best record win it all? Hardly ever. If you continually hold on to your pieces and hope for the future you end up like the 2000's twins. Always 1 or 2 pieces away hoping for prospects that never amount to anything to help you win it all next year. I would rather watch a handful of "great" prospects get traded away for players to help us win a World Series than to watch the twins for 10 years continually lose in the first round or barely not make it there year after year. You can argue prospects and numbers all day everyday and pretend that Major League Baseball is the same thing as your favorite video game but the fact of the matter is is that prospects and numbers rarely win you anything but fancy awards as you watch someone else winning a ring.
