A former cy young winner with playoff experience who’s been on a roll recently who’s making $30M ($15M of which was payed as signing bonus if I understand) essentially. Has an option for next year at $30M. $15M of which is deferred until 2027 so with the Twins money situation you’re gonna want cash sent in the deal to cover that. So a 15-20 prospect to acquire him. 2 prospects in the 5-20 range for the Giants to send the $12-15M cash. That’s what I’m thinking. He’s the only pitcher that you can put up top with Pablo who’s gonna start playoff games. Kikuchi isn’t that guy and there isn’t any other rentals that do what snell does.
-
I’d be willing to put a prospect package together to get Blake snell. To get him and have the giants cover a vast majority of his salary it may take a couple higher end prospects but I don’t really like kikuchi or any of the rest of the rentals. Based on some of these other trades teams are making am I in the ballpark on sending them Andrew Morris to acquire him. Then sending them Luke Keaschall and CJ Culpepper in order for the Giants to send 12-13M with Snell to cover his salary next year if he exercises his option? If he doesn’t they’re sending cash which the twins “seem” to need and it just goes in the pot for next year to cover some of the pay raises. This gets the twins a top of the rotation arm. Covers his 15M next year if he exercises his option to where we’re only paying a few million. Uses some prospects that don’t really have a spot come next year. Not indispensable prospects but “fair” value for a top arm. Also you get some money from the giants. Might be a creative way to get him. Takes prospects but you gotta trade value to get value.

He’s the top ranked HS bat in his draft class. Already showing elite discipline. After missing the first couple months of the season. Also after dominating rookie ball for 9 games after his return. What else do you want after 62 games from a 19 YO? Bryce Harper? Mike Trout? Come on. Be realistic here.
-
Jenkins compared to the other HS bats. He’s elite at this point for a 19 yo at low A. Other than Colt Emerson and maybe… maybe Max Clark there isn’t a single 2023 HS bat that’s showing as much promise as Jenkins as far as elite discipline. He’s simply not swinging at stuff out of the zone and if he is he’s still clobbering it which is huge for a young player. Looking at BB to K ratio and OBP he’s replicating what Mauer did at A ball. And from these reports he’s on track. Blake Mitchell has the flashy numbers but is striking out at a astronomical rate which is unsustainable once he reaches the upper minors unless he improves his swing and miss rates. At low A I’d rather see Jenkins’ numbers than Mitchells numbers. Jenkins is fine. He’s gonna be a good player barring a catastrophic set back. Maybe not Bryce Harper in the bigs at 19 but he’s on track to be a star/ very solid MLer. And that’s about the best you can ask from a #5 pick in the MLB draft. Stop hating.

Royce Lewis, Injuries, and Stupid Luck
FargoFanMan replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ah genetics. The scapegoat we can use for everything. Wipe our hands, shrug our shoulders and walk away. Maybe. But as Lucas has outlined and in great detail by the way a much more plausible explanation. His body is simply compensating for not one major injury but 2. Those being major knee surgery. That combined with the massive bulk that Royce has put on I think combine to lay it out in front of us. The body doesn’t simply recover when the IL time is up but rather it takes years to gradually build up and transfer the compensation back to the injury point. Genetics may be a small part of it but I think we fail to realize how the body works in a top of the line athlete. What we should ask is how many abdominal muscle area pulls he had before is 2 major knee injuries. Again thanks to Lucas Seehafar for this great in depth article! -
“One of the pitchers no one wants to face in this league…CRACK!!!” “Home run for Walker Jenkins!!!” Is he starting to get in a groove after being injured the first part of the year? I hope so!

Plus the Twins need a compliment to all the righties and they’ll go above and beyond to squeeze another second half out of him like he had last year. Unless they are blown away(I’m talking 2 top 100 prospects and someone to replace him) he’ll be a Twin from here on out. No way they bet on Wallner/Larnach/etc. unless they epically fall out of the playoff race in the next month.

Potential Trade Targets(Part 1)
FargoFanMan commented on Elinoah1110's blog entry in Eli's Twins Talk
What the twins need is a SHUT DOWN LHRP! A guy who gets lefties and righties out. No dumpster diving. No 6th, 7th inning relief pitcher who just gets a few guys out. A legit shutdown lhrp. Conjure up Andrew Miller in his prime. Find that guy! Or someone close to that.- 12 comments

Yeah, I just feel that unless a catcher is a slam dunk pick they are almost as much of a wildcard as a pitcher. I think you gotta take a few every year in the later rounds that have some upside and roll the dice. As far as Brecht I think he has the stuff but that’s not really the twins way. They like tall projectable pitchers and add velocity as they come up. A guy that has that already and is a bit wild isn’t really their traditional pick. But as far as taking the highest upside with a pick if he’s there he’s that guy! As far as Cavaco I remember hating that pick and thought they squandered a top 15 pick that draft. Hopefully he finds it as a pitcher but he was kinda the flavor of the month. A bit like Jeffers was but that’s the mlb draft for ya!

I like Janek a lot as well but that bat profiles as a below average to average as a major leaguer to me. With catchers I believe you’ve gotta look for the bat and the arm and then look if there’s potential to improve with the defense over 3 years of professional development. Jeffers I believe was the perfect catcher prospect as far as tools. Work the defense in. If the bat is not at least a 55 grade I’m iffy. I know Jeffers wasn’t the high end prospect at the time but that developmental path seemed the right one. Janek is on the cusp for me as a first round pick. Maybe if he’s there in the comp round yes. I like the arm a lot but the bat just doesn’t do it for me at 21. These 1st round catchers are so hit and miss. I like Brecht if still on the board or the real intriguing reach for me would be Kash Mayfield. I know they don’t usually take pitchers in the first round but Brecht and Mayfield are 1 and 2 for me at 21.

Agreed somewhat. Although I think the Twins need a game changing LH hitter instead. Kepler has been good at times but too inconsistent to balance out C4, Lewis, Jeffers etc. the switch hitters in Castro and Santana work for the regular season but in the playoffs maybe not. As far as another “playoff caliber” starter… Always! Time will tell who’s available and who’s injured come deadline time but as we found out last October even a “playoff caliber” starter (sonny gray) can lay an egg and a “playoff caliber” lineup (astros, rangers) can carry a team as well.

Love to see these wins to prevent the sweeps but dang. Can we spread some of these runs out evenly? It’s so odd how feast and famine this offense is. Absolutely maddening!

Agree it is not a managerial issue. Rocco plays the left right matchup no matter what. He needs the personnel to make those matchups. I agree it’s early in the season yet. Three major things are in play compared to last season though. Cleveland and Kansas City are the first two. The last thing is thinking the last half of 2023 will happen again. Last year Cleveland sank and the twins flourished. I don’t see that window being the same as last year as Cleveland is much better and Kansas City is gonna be the pest that keeps the twins from catching them. To catch Cleveland the twins are gonna have to play much better than last year and this roster has a few warts that need to be addressed sooner rather than later for that to work.

Absolutely agree. Kiersey for Margot. Lee for farmer. And literally anyone of our minor league catchers can replicate at the very least what Vazquez is doing. He’s unanimously the worst player in the league. He can’t be played and Jeffers can’t catch every game. something needs to happen. I don’t blame Rocco. First I blame ownership. Second is the front office. We all knew this was bound to happen. We needed everyone to replicate their 2023 second half and that was never in the cards.

You’re absolutely right. The only problem is when you are resigning guys that we’re on your team last year and claiming that as impactful additions well that is assuming your fan base to be idiots. So we’re at square one. Great! But what are the chances that Odorizzi has another breakout year? That a 40yo Nelson Cruz has another mvp worthy year? That Garver comes out of nowhere to become a silver slugger? Oh, and the fact that with this pitching staff we’ll need to hit 300+ homers again. The point is the Twins have 30M in the bank and we have nothing to show for it that would put the team in elite status. Instead we tried to penny pinch and got nothing. The Twins aren’t surprising anyone this year like last and if they do then kudos. But when you got the firepower use it to become a World Series contender. Not a division contender. This is just classic 2000’s era Twins.

Front Page: A Message To The Front Office
FargoFanMan replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You are right on this. I guess my main point is whether we want playoff wins or regular season wins. Building a team up through the farm to capture regular season wins is the model. That’s fine and gets you to the playoffs. The part that bothers me is the Twins never make the all in moves like the James shields and Wade Davis for high level prospects moves to acquire impact players for a run moves. We always stand pat and hold those top level prospects. That’s good for sustaining long runs but wouldn’t it have been nice to pick up Thor for Buxton and a few high level prospects? I like Buxton and Lewis and Kirilloff but I like an ace more. Maybe it would’ve amounted to the same Yankees pummeling that we got but man would it feel pretty good going into this season having a solid rotation. I’m not saying sell the farm but just making a big impact trade or a big impact signing would make me feel as if the front office is doing something. Cole was had for almost nothing a few years ago. We need to find that trade if we’re not going to spend big for pitching. -
Front Page: A Message To The Front Office

It’s only been said a million times on here. Most by me haha. What does everyone prefer? A.) A team that continually wins its division and plays the course every year using the farm system to supplement FA losses. Never making any big moves and always getting to the playoffs but never having enough firepower to make an October run to the World Series(2000’s Twins). B.) A team that builds from Within. Stacking up high draft picks in order to build a team. Continually at the bottom of the league. Finally getting a core, makes very aggressive moves and trading away top prospects to supplement your core. Making the World Series 2 years in a row and winning it once. After that returning to the bottom to hopefully do it again in 5-10 years.(2013-2016 Royals). There’s no such thing as dynasties anymore in MLB. You get to chose one of these. Which do you pick? -

Article: Spending the Twins' Excess Cash
FargoFanMan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If we’re not spending cash then why are we not making deals? Adding prospects? Anything? We’re caught in the middle right now which is almost worse than rebuilding. Would the braves want Kepler? They have pitching prospects galore. Kepler and someone for a prospect or two. Maybe Teheran and Wright? Or someone else.- 47 replies

FargoFanMan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
These games are fun and all but it truly shows the sad state of the franchise. I remember when we were looking ahead to 2018 with Buxton and Sano putting up MVP numbers. Remember when? 2018 future lineup C Turner/Garver 1B Kepler 2B Dozier SS Gordon 3B Sano LF Rosario CF Buxton RF AB Walker DH Mauer/Palka SP Santana SP Berrios SP Meyer SP May SP Stewart/Jay RP Rogers RP Chargois RP Reed RP Romero RP Burdi RP Melotakis Let’s hope 2022 brings us closer than 2018 -
Article: Spending the Twins' Excess Cash
FargoFanMan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Cano that was 30+ years old and still delivered 3 above solid years in Seattle? Are talking about the 29 year old Grienke that rivaled only his own teammate in LA at a modest 20M+. Or is it the 32 year old Grienke that has fared pretty damn well for his age it’s just the albatross annual salary that may be a bit much for anyone not named Kershaw? These two guys are I believe the exception and not the rule when it comes to FA’s. I’m talking about a guy who is 26. Plays 160+ games a year. Without injury is gonna put up at least 280/330/450. Embraces being the face of a franchise. Plays stellar 3rd base and very solid SS. Of course that is gonna cost you money. After 4 years and it’s not a fit then you trade him. He’s only 30 then if there’s not already an opt out somewhere in there. This guy has at least 4 more prime years barring major injury which is covered by an insurance I’m sure. If not this guy though then who? That’s my question. The answer? Nobody. Harpers close but injury prone and doesn’t provide the glove. I’d pay Manny a front loaded contract maybe in the 35-40M range over the first 5 of 10 years with a few opt outs. Then you have something to build around and he’s instantly the most recognized face of Minnesota sports and more. Who’s next? A retired Mauer? Parise? Guys who are either retired or washed up?- 47 replies
