  1. Is that why he fell? Not necessarily a bad way to acquire someone with higher upside. Kind of sucks though that you won't see him for a year or more.
  2. Not sure I agree here. Identifying talent doesn't appear to be the issue (at the moment at least). You could have made that case a while back when it was clear that the scouting department didn't shift with new baseball trends, that's part of why this team had no help when things hit the fan in 2011, but that is a symptom of problems that were going on in 2006. This team's problem is development. That's completely different from identifying talent.
  3. Well, I live there You're right, winters are a breeze in Indiana in comparison to MN. However, I'll be honest in that for a 7 figure salary and a good opportunity, you can afford to turn up the heat and buy a heavy coat. I don't think the weather is going to be the reason someone turns down the job, nor should it factor into hiring.
  4. Hmm... not sure I want to start a new thread on this, but read this gem this morning on MILB. A few parallels here, especially if Texas is selling low on Profar and Gallo. Those are the types of moves TR would have been all over. Sounds like it is as bad for Texas fans right now as Twins fans.
  5. Given his current play, that isn't a problem. It's an asset as it's way undervalued.
  6. I'm not sure you can compare their minor league numbers for many of the reasons mentioned here. Context matters and they don't have much in common. That said, Dozier has shown the ability to be an elite hitter and above average defender at the major league level for long periods of time. While Polanco to be fair hasn't had the opportunity to do so, those types of players don't exactly grown on trees. I think at the end of the day, trading Dozier is the right answer, especially with only 2 years left under contract, but I don't pretend to think that Polanco can walk in and out produce him in 2017. He may never put a season like Dozier.
  7. Nothing wrong with asking for someone who actually cares about people, especially when your product is people. That doesn't bother me. Competent though... Kind of what that too. All of a sudden we get to see how much of this mess is on ownership, and ownership appears to be unable to understand. If ownership doesn't understand their contribution to total system failure, then we're unfortunately going to see more total system failure.
  8. Just about everyone on the list needs to move up a level, with exceptions to Walker (needs work) and Palka (not on the 40 man and really no place to play at the moment). What I really want Antony to do is make the trades/DFAs needed to get them up there. The following should be removed from the roster, some by Aug 1 and the rest by Aug 31: Plouffe, Abad, Kinzler, Suzuki, Milone, and Nolasco. I'd argue Dozier should be traded too, but if that waited to the offseason, I wouldn't necessarily be upset.
  9. love this piece. Hope the owners make it an article.
  10. His peripherals have been slowly improving over the last year, though his production hasn't caught up. Hopefully this is a sign that the production is starting to be impacted by those peripherals. I suspect he gets another season in AAA, which will be the real judge on whether or not Walker has figured it out.
  11. Garver was a good defender in college, being the runner up to Turner for the big defensive award that year. He's just not Turner level. I'm fine with that given that his bat might be above average to go with good but not great defense.
  12. A good player does not equal a good GM or manager. Heck, Dave Stewart was a pretty good player in his day. I'd like to see Torii as a coach long before he gets any higher level responsibilities. Also of note, I have zero problem if he gets a coaching job in the Minnesota system.
  13. Let's not just pile on for the sake of piling on. Ryan picked up plenty of decent talent in his second stint. Berrios, Walker, Duffey, and Chargois are all sitting at the majors or on the cusp. None of these were the products of drafting super high. He picked up nice pieces in Palka, Thorpe, Burdi, Jorge, Romero, Wade, Garver, etc. as well... and these are just off the top of my head. I won't argue there's a problem on the development side. I've been saying that much myself. We are about to find out how much of that is on Molitor/ownership than anything else. Like it or not, the industry recognizes the talent that sits in the Twins system, and much of that is on Ryan as he manned the helm for the last four or so seasons. The new GM gets to figure out why it is we cannot seem to develop it.
  14. This makes sense, to an extent, but given how loyal TR was to Gardy, I struggle picturing it... then again, you kind of wonder if there was some sort of rift between the two, particularly surrounding guys like Polanco and Meyer.
  15. I'm still looking for the posting... not on MLB.com. Found this little site, but it's not there either. I'm just curious how the job description reads. New GM opening, must love Molitor.
  16. yeah, strange way to orchestrate your exit.
  17. Well, Antony reports to DSP. I don't know much about DSP, but I really hope he'd avoid the Sano for Hoey swap mentioned elsewhere.
  18. It has it's own wiki... http://calvinball.wikidot.com/ of course a search for Calvin Ball also drums up some dude's resume....
  19. I loved reading the Calvin ball episodes.... they had like what, 20 bases?
  20. I usually sing TRs praises in acquiring talent as well, but these trades happened at a time when prospects weren't nearly as valued. A lot has changed in that aspect of baseball in the last 20ish years, and TR was a big reason for that change. I'm not quite so certain he adopted well when he could no longer pick and choose who he wanted when someone called asking for major league talent. That aspect of his job has gotten a bit more difficult over time. He's made some decent trades since then, but not of the quality listed above, and he's had a few more misses as well.
  21. Toxic cultures are a bit different to deal with, and having worked in a few, I can personally attest that there's some truth to that. Usually though, the toxicity is most noted by the competent folks who are usually the ones being held accountable for that bureaucracy b/c they don't know how to play the blame game. This gets more difficult b/c it becomes exponentially harder to figure out who is and is not competent. That said, I don't think toxicity is the problem here. The org doesn't behave like one. You want to see an organization that behaves in a dysfunctional manner, go look at the NFL front office. I don't see that style of behavior in MN with the most obvious exception being the occasional media leaks clearly targeted at specific people. I would just expect there to be more evidence of a toxic FO if that's the case. I could be wrong there.
  22. I'm not going to argue that the organization is a bit too much on the country club side. I am going to argue the idea of the reverse Peter principle (if such a name exists). People rise to those jobs b/c they were good at their former jobs. Turning around and simply canning them on principle is the wrong answer. No doubt that the front office needs some cleaning, but if you want the best end results, then the org as a whole needs to be smart about the cleaning. Gardy teaching baseball fundamentals and Smith continuing to push paperwork is not what is wrong with this organization unless each of these individuals still retain far more power outside of their skillsets. Based on my observations, the org needs a clearer direction at the top, and it needs some significant help on the development side. Only Gardy is really in the cross hairs there, and I'd argue he was added b/c the FO recognized this to some extent, whether Gardy in particular is the right guy for that job, I'm not sure, but I'm responding more to the fire for the sake of firing mentality. Things can get worse. They really can.
  23. That's just not true. Generally, you won't get an existing GM to uproot unless there is a good incentive for them to do so, but as Brock stated, there's a lot of good reason to want this job. Like it or not, there are plenty of positives about the organization starting with a lot of young talent. What needs to be done differently is development. It's not like the next GM is in inheriting the worst team in baseball with no young talent.
  24. No one is arguing the need to bring in fresh blood. We are arguing the idea that everyone in the org should just be canned. That was the implication here. Smith was a good administrator. His role in administration at this point has nothing to do with baseball operations. If he's to be canned, it's because he's not doing a good job in that role, not because of his failures as a GM.
  25. Brian has figured out how to turn ADHD into a special talent. One awesome game thread intro.
