    It's almost a given that the Twins did not match one, or all three legs of the Darvish stool. Dollars, years, opt out. This moots the argument that he didn't want to play here. There is simply no history of the Twins under either owner of ever going out on the FA market and buying the top dog out there. No history of a valid competition with the big boys based on dollars and cents. There were some that had a look of it. Mauer, Morris, Puckett, heaven forbid even Hughes. But there was always a caveat involved, or they were second tier in that year. But not the big fish. That history made me, when they signed Park out of Korea, "outbidding" all of baseball for his rights, say to my son, "somethings wrong here. The Twins never ever outbid everyone if the player is close to be being desired". And something was wrong. He couldn't hit MLB fastballs. It takes two pieces to make an orginisation competitive. The owner, and the GM. If one or the other is not totally invested in winning, it doesn't have a chance. I still think Pohlad made a good decision hiring Falvine. They seem to making some moves that make this a better overall operation. But JP is holding the final piece in his office desk. His checkbook.

    Depends on injuries and the intent. As you said, Mauer was a no brainer. I doubt the ten year term was open to too much discussion. Without his getting whacked incessantly by foul balls and concussed it likely would have ended up as a fair deal. As to the intent, for Mauer it would be to keep the pitchforks in the barn. As to a Darvish type? The intent is to make this roster competitive and valid. No team thinks the last three years he is getting is worth it. Is that length of contract for someone his age a good deal? The Twins dont, and never have, and other teams might not either but take the lost years into the equation. I have always hoped Falvine will help the team draft, develop, promote, and trade assets to remain competitive. I never for a moment expected them to get involved in glitzy FA signings. It ain't their money.

    I wasn't surprised or disappointed that Darvish wasn't coming here. There was never a rationale for it. I like MN, but it's not an attractive destination for FA with a full list of choices. And an ownership that won't pay the extra cash to overcome that perception, just or not. But the bottom line is there is no reason or history to see it happening. Why would I be disappointed or surprised over something that had almost no chance of happening. Middle of the pack guys, sure. But whether Darvish is or isn't still top flight, he was this years top flight. And the Twins are in SP hell right now. All I can say is I hope they made an intentional decision to move now in another direction. Please tell me there is more?

    I will play Captain Obvious here and point out the following. -Mauer was a hometown legend. -He just had a stunning season. -He was young and worth the money as a catcher. -Not a FA. -The team just had received several dollars for the new Target Field from taxpayers. One of the CORE promises, and premises was the increased revenue stream would allow the retention of talent. Mauer was the perfect storm. It's not a stretch to say that 50% of his contract could have been allocated to public relations.

    I am somewhat sympathetic to this opinion, but maybe not as harsh on Falvine. They will next likely read from their 3x5 card. The one that says how JP will let them spend anything they wish to improve the club. This is a Pohlad enterprise. There ain't gonna be no cash folks. That said I would take a run at Archer. While I was always and am a Kepler fan, none of the position players are worth anything in reality without pitching. I would rather miss Kepler than see a whole roster wasted trying to out slug the entire league.

    All that, and in MN he could zip line across the Mississipi! Let's see him try that in LA across the Pacific!

    There is an old Cajun tale about a coon hunter stuck in a tree at night with a bobcat. He yells at his partner "Shoot shoot!" The partner is afraid he will hit the guy by mistake. The treed hunter says "just shoot, I don't care which one of us you hit!" And that's the Twins, just do something. That said, I can see going for a Darvish in this time frame. But don't get fooled into thinking they are going to play with the Big Boys. That's a fools errand. IF the new FO is flexible and imaginative they can compete with regularity by moving assets around. Something the old FO did not. They got hung up on sacred cows and waddled in limbo for years.

    Given the division 82. But so many variables still in the wind. Sano and Santana and the SP. Lots of free games to be had in this division tho.

    I could see the Nunez idea given the Sano situation, and my agreement that EE will not replicate 2017. But any move that puts Grossman anywhere near a fielders glove has to be considered suspect.

    You can type poop. But you cannot use the words Gibson and "reliable SP" in the same sentence. Where's a mod when you need one?

    I liked the point on Grossman. True he walks, and it's basically the factor in his OBP, but there are stretches where he seems to think he is calling the balls and strikes. I know there are others, but I always wondered why pitchers nibble on guys like RG. There offensive abilities don't merit that respect. Why walk a guy who basically can't hurt you with his bat. Meaning if he gets to a three ball count, belt high fast balls until he proves he can really take advantage of them.

    I always refer to them as 'bad ball' hitters. My memory of Tony Oliva is he was one of the best of them. It's not necessarily a talent one would encourage, but some players do possess it.

    Nice job, thank you. I would have likely went with Gagne over Smalley simply because SS is the ultimate defensive position in baseball. An offensive styled SS has to be quite a hitter to make up for the outs that escape him if his defense is lacking. Regardless, it a nice article and well thought out. And should garner lots of arguments, er, discussion. I told my son years ago, if you took ten solid experienced HS BB coaches and sit them in the bleachers, and worked out 25 good players in front of them, you would get ten different lineups.

    I still think Morris Game 7 was the ultimate baseball performance I have watched. Situation, pressure, force of will, and the backing up of his "let's get it on" comment all contribute. Yes I (we) are biased, as well we should be.

    There was an adult curmudgeon in our very small town who constantly dissed Harmon. And he ragged me because he knew I was a big fan. The middle of one season we bet a pop (it was years before I found out some people call it soda) on whether The Killer would hit 50 HR's that year. Needless to say that was his 49 year. Probably a good thing, it maybe was the impetus for my dislike of all things gambling?

    Walk down memory lane. I wasn't as aware of the Vikings right away as the Twins. WCCO assured that. My moms sister and their family lived not far from the Met. South and a little west I believe. They lived on a street with houses on one side and corn fields on the other. Probably within a mile of the Met. Harmon and Camillo were my first pro sports heroes. Anyway, thanks for the memories of a simpler time. Better? Who knows. But dertainly different.

    That's why first move is to trade for Duensing. We will need him next off season as a trade chip. Probaly can get Kershaw even up. At the most throw in Zach Granite.

    If this same old same old approach doesn't change we are destined to be the poster boys of: Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me! Sadly I think we are well past twice.

    Or if the second half was played against mostly teams with subpar records. I know you have to play em sometime, but IIRC the schedule ended up tilted that way.

    I don't remember saying we can't do it. I do remember saying that even after we went to the base and foul ball version of Robo, we still don't eliminate the disagreements. But what we did do is extend the game time, and allow more free time for bathroom breaks. And we made the game just a little less liveable in some people's minds. My argument against Robo umps has nothing to do with their inability to be perfect. I accept that. I just don't think the difference will warrant upsetting a long time component of the game. By the by, if I was a proponent of, or insistent on perfection, I highly doubt I would be on TD! . .

    IF I had any belief, or the Twins had any history of signing a top flight FA, I could buy into the strategy of evaluating the questions in this years staff, May, Gonsalves, etc. Then when those results are in, buy a mid season rental, or a big signing next year. But there isn't anything in the Twins DNA that shows that a legitimate possibility. NADA.

    It seems our closest proximation to Robo Umps would be instant replay. I think tennis may have something closer for line calls, but I kept getting a kink in my neck from watching it, so I quit. And even with the aid of instant replays, tags and foul balls and HR poles shown to the N-th of a degree, we still cannot always agree on the result.

    Duensing. Not because he would help the SP, but without him who are we all going to offer in a mid season trade for Mike Trout when Buxton runs into a wall in late June.
