  1. I am not sure bringing up JJ Hardy is a good argument when part of the discussion relates to the FO ability to judge and yes, adapt to talented players.
  2. Siehniscuit beat me to the point. Arcia is a potential 30 HR guy, and left handed. Talent is not his problem. Applying himself properly might be. It took Ploufe 5 years to be just passible. He won't be a plus fielder, but almost every team has a power guy in the OF. And if he eventually can't cut it out there, the American League has the DH. He has twice the potential as Vargas. Bottom line, I am tired of us giving up on talent early, sometimes seemingly because the guy does not fit a certain profile. Whether Gomez kisses his bat or not should not be a factor in whether he can play or not. If you don't have the patience to develop young talent, then go out and buy it. It's the getting stuck in the middle that causes four 90+ loss years in a row.
  3. As it has been the whole season, the Twins are going to have to get worse, to get better. As long as they keep winning, even if it seems implausible, they will not make a move to improve. (Please don't consider Escobar one). So the conundrum continues. From a franchise future perspective, they would have been far better off continuing the first week of the year, and did a rebuild. Now if they remain in contention, ??? They can't, or won't make any significant changes.
  4. it's a force out, either way. The hitter/runner has to reach first base, how he is retired is moot. Last year in an amateur game I saw the oddest thing. On a two strike count, some idiot stole home with two outs and a left handed hitter up. The guy did not swing, taking strike 3 which the catcher dropped. Then casually threw to first. Of course the runner had crossed the plate way earlier, and when the run was not count everyone went bat poopy crazy!
  5. it's not your imagination, it's the bottom half, or more of this order.
  6. I have found a lot of my conjunctions uncoordinated.
  7. I have found if you only type with one finger on each hand, that while you will still make mistakes, they take longer to make!
  8. Or they could have put Santana at short last year in that useless season, and found out what they had or did not have. A year under his belt there maybe would have change his start this year. One will never know!
  9. I won't claim this as an original thought, but it has been suggested that Vargas' arrival puts Hunter back in RF full time. You get rid of Escobar in LF though. A toss up? And I still will maintain, much to others chagrin, that if you want to be a contender, Escobar should not be your SS, for too long.
  10. A lot has been written about Polanco's arm being a little short, for short! . More suited for second base. I don't think Escobar is an upgrade, maybe a placeholder for?? As for Santana, last year he went up and just swung. He was a very good bad ball hitter, and this year he is spending his time trying NOT to strike out. His long at bat yesterday was painful to watch. He never got one decent swing in. Something, or someone has turned him into a very defensive hitter.
  11. In the words of the great baseball analyst, Alfred E. Neumann. "WHAT, ME WORRY".
  12. If Dick/Bert is correct, after Suzuki's DP, team now 1 for 18 off the bench. No wonder Molitor doesn't pinch hit. This roster was misconstructed from the beginning. Playing losing teams, and having that "pixie dust" hid it, but over a season it's going to bite you in your gluteus Maximus!
  13. I was just wondering if pinch hitting has been outlawed in MN? It sure seems that way.
  14. It is becoming more prevelant in MLB for managers with no experience to be hired. (This is not a knock on Molitor). This leaves the GM more completely in charge, than if he hired a manager with a few years under his belt, and an opinionated track record. There was Ryan/Gardy, and now Ryan/Molitor. The constant is Ryan. Which makes it my contention that the roster construction is mostly Ryan's doing. And while I have absolutely no problem with Molitor being hired, the thought has occurred to me that one of Dougie's liabilities was his outspoken attitude. Which makes me wonder if TR thought he would be too difficult to control, when it came to roster decisions.
  15. Yankee Phobia is alive and well!
  16. Beer called "Milwaukee Could Do Better" might not sell all that well?
  17. Is this because Fenway has an extra large bullpen and they can all fit at once? Or is it because Tonkin was on TR's recent call list, and he didn't have to look up someone else's number?
  18. Ryan won't trade one of the Big Three, Sano, Buxton, or Berrios. But there could be the temptation to trade a Burdi, Kepler, Jones, Arcia, or Vargas level player in a futile attempt to each the playoffs. The article dealt quite a bit with probabilities. As should the Twins. This is a nice run. How long will it go? Then the probabilities set in. Fans should embrace FANtasy. The FO should embrace reality.
  19. A fairly observant baseball blogger, (certainly not me), wrote today that this is what Molitor, or the FO wants. No Arcia, Vargas, or Pinto. This allows them to increasingly slide Torii into the DH slot. It also increases the OF defense as it rotates Escobar, and Rosario through the OF. His contention is they are going to continue to focus on defense, and that Escobar is a better OF than Arcia, that Vargas clogs the DH spot, and that there will be no Pinto, as Suzuki is catching almost all the games anyway. While I tend to agree with his observation, I think the philosophy is short sighted.
  20. I am pleased and surprised to see Hunter in the lineup today. He was missing yesterday, and I was concerned he had been traded to the Astros, as today's Strib had a story on Houstons win over the Sox. After the win, the story recounted how Houston retired to the clubhouse for a laser, smoke and disco ball celebration. It was my understanding from the Twins team beat writers that this celebration was a Hunter phenomenon, that he possibly had it copyrighted. :).
  21. A team that bats a Suzuki, or Escobar, or Nunez in the 5 hole is really not built to score even as many runs as they currently do. None of the background numbers suggest a high octane offense. Relying on Hermann to supply your power is not a sustainable solution.
  22. I agree with wanting someone with some pop in the DH role, and a legitimate pinch hitter. But whether it be Santana, Arcia, Pinto, or Vargas, sooner or later nothing is gained by staying in Rochester. They have to take their lumps in MLB. True patience is letting them do that. Keeping them in Rochester or TN while lesser talent is here, is not patience, it's lack of purpose.
  23. I prefer my DH not to have to steal bases, I like when they just make sure to touch them on the way around, while the ump is waiting to hand the pitcher a new ball!
