  1. For the same reason you pitch in and out and up and down and slow and fast. It won't change an entire batting order for an entire game. But it will move a hitter off the plate, or move his feet if you will? You pitch inside all the time so guys don't cover the outside corner comfortably. You pitch up and in so you can slip in a low outside slider. (See Sano, Miguel) If a hitter doesn't have it in the back of his mind that you are not afraid to move him a little, he will use you for BP. I did not advocate hitting anyone in retaliation for their success. Bu I would have no qualms about making him uncomfortable to ensure mine!
  2. Never above the belt! That said, someone in the booth mentioned pitching in off the plate. Dick asked, "a couple inches"? The other guy was talking 6-8", so Dick said you mean "move his feet". This reminded me that in the new baseball hitters are allowed to swing out of there a** at a pitch with no fear of being moved off the plate. Honest to god, they swing like its slo-pitch softball. I never ever would throw above a belt, that's where mistakes happen. But bouncing one past an ankle would lighten foot steps considerably.
  3. Totally agree that using the schedule as a rationale for success is backwards. Your goal should be to be able to compete with every team, not just the also rans. To me a bigger issue is team construction. This is an offense based team in a pitching based sport. You can win games in the regular season this way, and some in the playoffs. But bottom line is that pitching wins way more often than hitting in tight playoff baseball. And for the Twins, that's definitely a reason to be worried.
  4. I assume no baby seals were harmed during this post? (I had a better comment, but even I didn't like posting it)
  5. FTFY. One emergency pitch!
  6. I assume there will be a "Circus Boy Update" to notify us of the date and time. Also, some consideration should be taken to plan this event in late summer so I can combine it with a trip to the Black Hills. .
  7. When his name was floated for a trade for pitching I considered it feasible. And I am a huge fan of his talent, and believer in said talent. While In the end I agreed with not trading him, I could not ignore the simple fact that his talent is useless on a bench. The other problem is his speed is elite, and what makes him so special. That will not age well with all these injuries. One other issue is that these issues are repetitive. You can almost cache the headline: Byron Buxton removed from today's game after running into (fill in the blank) at full speed! It's very hard to be a difference maker if you only play 60% of a season, every season.
  8. One last thought on Roccos's managerial chops. There isn't a lot to go on so far. The Twins spent the first half of the season amassing wins with very large margins. The offense was so dominant anyone who could put 9 names on a sheet of paper could have won during that time. Once the games tighten, the hitters start to press a little, and a limited BP needs daily massaging one can get a better handle on his talents, or lack thereof. I will repeat what I have said before. While good managers possibly don't "win" many games, bad managers lose quite a few. There are things I like about him so far, and things I don't. But I can't say either opinion outweighs the other at this time.
  9. Dyson actually spent only slightly more time flying across all those humans as it took me to drive the bike to breakfast in SW MN last Sunday. While I did not see a small band, but I heard there was a 3 piece combo at the Legion in Walnut Grove Saturday night.
  10. Nope. I saw him with Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa in a Wal Mart just last night. On a more serious note, while I can't necessarily define Rocco's managerial faults to a T, it seems in general that he panics a little. His cool facade isn't backed up by his moves. I know Rogers is his big, maybe only gun, but he should leave it in his holster more often. Last night was the genisis for this loss today. It's not even that he "burns" him out, it's that he uses him unnecessarily, and then has to limit him later. And one last BTW, if our ASG SS had left his feet and knocked that GB down, this may not have happened. Terrible game awareness.
  11. Good point. If all we get is a guy capable of being good some days, and not some other days, we have several of those in Mpls. and at the Rocherster storage facility.
  12. There seems to be a shortage of no miss arms, and a clear path. I don't think anyone really knows what's going to happen as this FO has surprised us before, both pro and con. But I do know that no matter what, I don't want a trade made just for the sake of PR or selling tickets. I want the FO to run a baseball team and the marketing dept. to deal with tickets sales, and bloggers!
  13. Train ride? To acquire such a nimble mind I think the Sox could easily throw in a chauffeur driven black Escalade! . Edit: Typing this I found that suggestive type showed this as "humble mind"? Lol. It was an internal struggle as to whether to correct it. But common sense won out.
  14. And the ambidextrous one in CF?
  15. A unique idea? They have been doing it in kids and amateur ball for decades, to the extent that many tournament and league rules mandate that any pitch is an inning. Also lots of tournaments allow only one appearance as a pitcher in a game. You leave the mound your are done. It may be unique in that MLB managers such as Kelly, Gardy, Molitor, et al have been so hidebound in the "respect for the game" mantra that they couldn't think this far out of a box. The only arguement I would accept against the practice is a concern over the health of the arm of a high priced asset.
  16. Is this what's called addition by subtraction? But seriously while it may be possible to land a "big fish", it ain't gonna be cheap. There aren't even a lot of tantalizing arms being bandied about either. I think there could be quite a bit of weeping and nashing of teeth.
  17. It was a crazy entertaining game, especially if you set your tivo for over 5 hours. I would imagine Yankees Daily could write the same article bemoaning their BP and the big hits the Twins accumulated. It was like watching a team play itself in a mirror!
  18. Not sure about others on here, but a "difference maker" could also be construed as someone who was not only one of, it not, the best defensive catcher of of his era, but a three time batting champion. For years, not several games. Try asking a veteran MLB pitcher this question: Mauer? Kepler? Game on the line!
  19. Since the Reverend is supplying the steaks and hospitality make sure you remember the 11th commandment when the game ends. "Thou shalt say little when you lose, and even less when you win"!
  20. Is it possible that both our offense and pen have spoiled us? Both basically over performing in relation to their core talent level? There seems no doubt the pen did. They were/are based on medium level MLB talent it seems and have over performed for a couple of months. And like the moon men 50 yrs. ago, now have returned to earth. The offense is somewhat similar. It's talent level does seem higher relative to the pen, but it also exceeded its boundaries by a considerable margin. Raise your hand if you even contemplated this would be two months of the best offense in MLB. The other thing about the offense is it was destined to be all or nothing. Many lamented the lack of on base abilities, fearing what has transpired. Numerous solos HR's. Basically what many suspected has occurred. A pitcher will help, but anyone thinking one RP will make this a dominating team the likes of April and May are fooling themselves. Going back to the weak Central will help, but whipping KC and Detroit isn't dominating. Plus, the White Sox may be past a pushover already?
  21. Looking at the recent roster moves, there seems to be something cooking. While I have no idea what it is, as a general principle I would much rather see the Twins keep good prospects and part with some of JP's money. But since I have few principles remaining, I guess one less won't matter.
  22. Taking Garver as an example: In the first inning it looks like he sat on, and ambushed his pitch early in the count ala Dozier. Result, HR. Someone throws you a cookie early and you are actually looking for it, then hit it. Otherwise you are reduced to waiting for a walk or two pitching mistakes in the same AB. Garvers last AB: not good situational hitting. Maybe he was trying to ambush a first pitch FB, since it was expected with the bases loaded. While he got one, it was a pitchers pitch, down and away a little. He hit it hard, but tried to pull it. Result, DP. The philosophy on both AB's was sound. He just was not selective enough. In the ninth, he needed a ball up in the zone for at least a fly ball. Just simply running up pitches per AB is not the answer,to every AB. Or hitter!
  23. I am not sure that playing golf and bowling with a guaranteed contract in your back pocket is the equivalent to "leaving this world"!
  24. I wonder if during the game they will track the exit velocity of the young player who OD'ed on prune juice between innings?
  25. My oldest daughter long proclaimed that "there is no way she is chasing around to a sporting event every night". I remind her of this while we sit at the games!! The good news is she now knows which side of second base the SS stands. (Or at least used to)
