Article: Week in Review: Home Sweet Home
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If you take this years team and figure out who you want up in a late situation, I would take EE, Rosario, then Mauer in that order. Assuming I am looking for a professional AB. And no jokes about Rosario and "professional AB" in the same sentence please. Nick noted the handling of Garver has been odd. There's a lot of odd going on that team. Since I would bet the farm that MOY is unmoveable, then somehow they have to get The FO and MOY on the same page. Meaning, if the FO turns that page to rebuild, they have to get MOY to quit playing for wins, and start playing for development. I have never saw a guy who played so long, so we'll, have such a terrible grasp of the basic philosophies of the game. You can lead him to the spreadsheet, and call him analytical, but that doesn't mean he accepts what mode his team is in, and what goals they should achieve. Btw, very nice write up Nick, thanks.- 19 replies

If I was the FO I would check the schedule. If we continue to play Baltimore and KC, we are buyers. If we have to delve deeper into the league like the White Sox, we should sell, sell, sell!

Article: Front Office Flop for the Twins?
Platoon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The. Twins are a line item on the financial statement of Pohlad Enterprsies. That is all it is to the Pohlads. And that beautiful new ball park they "gave us"? We gave most of it to ourselves, which I really have no problem with. The Pohlads contribution to the ball park was a direct reflection of their appreciation of the immense increase in the value of their franchise due to the new park.- 134 replies

Article: With Hope of Contention Gone, What's Next?
Platoon replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Since I don't think there is any chance of Molitor being fired, the following is conceptual at best. Knowing it will be almost impossible for Falvine to fire Molitor anyway, I would tell him that here's the deal: We are in analytical mode. We will supply the roster with The players we want analyzed. You will play them. Do that and your won lost record is irrelevant. Don't do it, and we will move heaven and earth to see you to the door. Again, my first, second and third choice is to see him simply gone. Preferably before the ASG. But that ain't gonna happen folks. -

I was likely the first guy bemoaning the fact that Garver looked like a D2 catcher. I haven't really changed that opinion. Turner, a defensive catcher was traded, leaving the choices slim and none. My comment was given the choice of Wilson and Garver I play Garver and see at least if I can develop a MLB hitter. Playing Wilson on this team, at this time is wasted innings. Unless one feels that making a run at second place in the Central Division is a worthwhile goal.- 134 replies

Article: Front Office Flop for the Twins?
Platoon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is no doubt that the injuries, and the Polanco suspension hurt greatly. But there are other issues which have made changes seem necessary. Some decisions were impactful, and some were more a symbol of the disfunction. The Belisle one being the most recent. Garver. I am not a Garver fan, but nothing is lost by seeing if he cannot become a usable tool behind the plate eventually, at least an offensive oriented one. We have innings and opportunity to evaluate pitchers and position players, and instead we are constantly trotting out dead end vets. As for Molitor I would never have resigned him, his teams don't respect him, you can tell that because they make no effort to improve in the basics, nor are they made to. But I think the hope that Molitor is gone at the end of the year are awfully optimistic. When the owners got your back, and you have two years left on your contract, it will be hard for Falvine to move him. I don't really believe that Molitor and the FO view how MLB rosters should be built, or handled. And that may be the biggest problem this team has, along with the appearance that Molitor has way to much input into roster decisions. (See Belisle). Either that or they are giving him enough rope to hang himself?- 134 replies

Article: MIL 3, MIN 2: Pushing Against a Stone
Platoon replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lost in the shuffle and season long disappointment was the catch by Broxton. First of all, given the height he reached, one of the best I have ever saw. Secondly, he made one similar the other day. In neither case did he run into the wall and need to be escorted off the field. Yes, Buxton, I am looking at you. Lastly he was so purely estatic without being obnoxious you had to enjoy it. No Joe Cool here. Sadly I sort of expected to be seeing that regularly in MN, not in Rochester NY.- 48 replies

Thanks for the nice write up. I really never thought it would be this bad this year. Nothing has went well. I didn't expect us to be the Astros, although I admit three years ago I thought we were on the same glide path. But I didn't expect to be embarrassingly bad either. Loved the film clip of Astudillo picking the guy off first. He looks like he enjoys the game. -
Getting acclimated is exactly what it says. You tend to get used to it. You don't get used to it flying every three days to a different city, nor by playing mostly night games. I am sure the Twins MiLB team in Florida is far better suited to play in Chicago yesterday than the Twins were. (No jokes) One of the reasons Korey Stringer is gone, and Bobby Wilson could have been is the "man up" bravado that precludes admitting you can't tell where the hell you are. And frankly, some people just plain can handle the heat better than others, and some the cold. And I would further bet that a lot of them gravitate towards those climates.

The most impressive performance was by Wendelstedt. Catchers get to sit half the game, and get their gear off. Plate umpires do not. And Hunter doesn't look like he is a full time member of Anytime Fitness. About ten years ago I did a 7 inning game behind the plate in a closed in park with humidity in the 80% range. I got to the point of feeling cold, and Corey Stringer kept flashing through my mind. It's truly a scary feeling, and I was amazed Wendelstedt made it through a game that was excruciating on a nice day. Wilson should have never been allowed to run after he got to first. It was all he could do to get air. And then Molitor jerks him the next inning anyway. (Maybe Molly had him confused with a RP?)

Last to first? IIRC this team wasn't anything to brag about the first half of last year also. Then an incredible stretch of lousy competition in the second half of 2017 helped fuel your narrative. That and a group of players all having career half years at the same time offensively. But the fact is that in the last 2 1/2 years the twins have played well in one half of one year. This equates to 20% of the time frame. There is something wrong here. And it's not just injuries and bad luck. The Sano RF experiment? Buxton opening the season in the 3 spot? Bunting like a fool for 2 years, and then abruptly not bunting? Bring the IF in early in games with a runner on third? Burning bullpen pitchers. One can nitpick each item, but the total of them is alarming.

Article: Deadline Doesn't Make Deals Imminent for Twins
Platoon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Getting a pick for a QO is thence prion, otherwise in a fashion I agree. The Twins have very few players tied down for next year. Leaving them just simply walk always puzzled me. -
Article: The Rise and Fall of Miguel Sano
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have no idea if the RF move was the cause or contributed to his "deterioration", but it seems the beginning of it. Did he resent the move to RF? It would seem so. There doesn't seem to be any anecdotal evidence that he prepared in the off season, either on the field, or in the gym for his new assignment. He chased fly balls with all the enthusiasm of a 6 year old cleaning his room. It's true he did hit for awhile, but his conditioning started to catch up with him. As for this season, no matter the rationale extended, just one look at him this spring made it apparent that he didn't spend the off season at AnyTime Fitness. He might just be the player who needs to hit rock bottom before he can see the light. I just hope I am wrong! -
We need a good 4th OF. RG is not an OF, he is at most an OB leadoff DH. Not exactly a sought after commodity. I would love to be a fly on the wall and know how much control Molitor has on the roster. He often uses the word "I" when discussing roster moves.

Article: Get To Know Twins Outfielder Jake Cave
Platoon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Once I saw Buxtons stats yesterday I sort of expected this. Seems like another sign that the FO has waved the white flag, and has switched to developmental mode for another year. Buxton should likely start looking for an extended stay hotel in Rochester? Good Grief! Motter, Garver, Wilson, LaMarre, Cave, Grossman, Andrianza. And that isn't counting the "name" players who might actually be hitting worse. How did and orginisation that leaned towards offensive minded player over defense, even in defensive positions, end up like this. Mind boggling!- 13 replies

Off The Rails: Mauer Raked by Souhan
Platoon commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Souhan is a provocateur, and I always read his stuff with that perception in place. But he does owe his reader some semblance of rationality. Mauer could have gotten far more in NY or Boston than here. LOTS. Nor does he owe us the personality of a Hunter, Hrbek, or Puckett.. Both Puckett and Mauer had injuries seriously impacting their careers in different manners. Both were good at their positions. I will say that Mauers talent was far more impressive at his postion than Pucketts was. Kirby may be in the HOF, thanks in large part to a couple plays one October. But he wasn't the talent at his position that Mauer was at his. As for Mauers future, I personally wish he would retire. He could still help the Twins, lord knows they need it. But I would hope he considers his health for the rest of his life and his family. I can't believe he would want to risk yet another concussion or concussion symptoms. It's frankly not worth it. He doesn't owe the Twins anything whatsoever, nor there fans.- 28 comments

1) .......Dozier is a perfect example of some of the problems. I am sort of a "dance with the one who brung you" type of manager fan. I have never been crazy aboout trying to ride a hot streak by a sub optimal player. To me it seems like day trading stocks. A day late, and several dollars short. But the Dozier thing is a perfect example of blind loyalty. I doubt there is anything Dozier could do to lose his upper half of the order position for over a day. And it looks like the next example is Belisle. Which begs Brian's question. Who exactly wanted Matt Belisle on this roster, this year. He just does not fit.

The Matt Magill Improvement Story
Platoon commented on Miles Death's blog entry in Thome the Moneyball
FO is saving his arm for after Presslys falls off. Sadly for Magill the teams medical staff will transplant Magills arm to Pressly over the ASG break, but won't tell Molitor. He will keep running Pressly out there, and won't notice Magills right arm is missing till the end of the season good byes after our annual one and done in NY. -
Bottom line. A streak hitter who piles up stats in bunches making his end of the year numbers ok. But is not that effective in what we now call late and close. Guys like him who 'try' and pull HR's all the time, are like basketball players who shoot more often than they should. 35 pts. one night when things are going well, and 7 the next night when they aren't. But they still keep shooting.

Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Fixing the Offense
Platoon replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While it's one of the most unlikely, the one guy who would totally ignite this bunch is Buxton. His speed turns a simple walk into a double. He has gap power plus. Operating like he did last half last year, this is a completely different offense. But I am not sure if he will reach that level this year, although I still think it will happen in his career. The guy with the best track record of half season resurrections is of course Dozier. He can certainly hang up the stats, even though I have never been convinced he can do it consistently in high leverage situations. The reason I didn't consider Sano is I don't think he will be in contention for the task this year. He isn't going to go down to FL, then to Rochester and mash MiLB pitching and be back anytime soon. This is likely the FO giving Sano his last chance to resurrect his career in MN. They aren't going to rush the process, frankly I think they will slow walk it. -
Baseball may be the only game where one has the time between plays to envision the possibilities that can occur during the next pitch. You can stand in the field and consider the score, the hitter, his leg speed, where and of what abilities the runners are, the wind, wet ball dry ball. All of the variables can be considered, so when up the ball is hit, you can react accordingly with aforethought. The basics, cutoff positions, behind or ahead of runners, etc, have all been drilled into you since you were 15 or before. What remains is does the player want to invest in the mental exercise needed to follow his past instruction, and if he does not, does the manager want to do something about it. It's that simple. How a manger handles these things is what defines him. Let's take Rosario for example. Noted free lancer. A couple years ago he stole third against a shift. walked to third is a better description. I think there were two outs, us up. Molitor had a fit, and IIRC Rosario was exiled to Rochester. Completely BS. But when Rosario throws a baseball all over the field repeatedly nothing is said. I like Rosario, he plays with passion and ability. He also plays with a lack of attention to detail. And will continue to do so. My point is how and when you discipline a player is important in his development. And in the isolated case of Rosario was handled poorly.

I guess my point was that some of the players lost this year, were not playing anywhere near last year, in fact they were fairly lousy. But for example, if this years Eddies both twisted an ankle this year, we're toast. If this years Dozier does it, no one would notice. Take out Doziers first week of the season, and the Kirby Puckett statue could fill in with little loss of productivity.
