  1. I didn't as much mean that Ryan would give him a spot in the rotation, as I meant Ryan would make the decision, no matter whether it be pen, rotation or DFA. That's way above Molly's pay grade.
  2. No one has mentioned that Mauer was the fortunate recipient of excellent timing. The Pohlads had used the "increased revenue keeps players" argument in getting public funding for TF. And along comes Joe! Hometown boy, big year of stats, and the very first opportunity for the team to pay up. I think the term is "The Perfect Storm"? Not many players get the chance to fill in the monetary blank on a contract themselves, but he did. If it would make anyone feel better, they could write off a percentage of the contract to goodwill, for that's what some of it was. He isn't going to be cut, he isn't going to be traded, he isn't going to renegotiate, and he isn't going to the bench! A discussion about his position in the batting order is valid. Anything else is futile.
  3. The Titanic? Or the Edmund Fitzgerald? Your choice! If you put Nolascoin in the BP, you have a 12M unhappy low level lomg reliever. Or for another $600,000 you could be getting a younger high velocity prospects feet (and arm) wet. Or suck it up and start him and hope for lightening? Or eat his salary? Not one decent option so far. I truly thought he might pitch well enough in ST to give the appearance of competence, so Ryan could save face, send Duffey down and figure out a way to trade Nolasco in June. He hasn't had the decency to do even that, painting Ryan into a very small corner. IF it was me, and IF I thought the team had a chance this year, I would either cut him, or dump him on someone and pick up part of his salary. Since that hasn't been a part of Ryans history to date, I imagine he still has a chance for the rotation, putting him in the pen is no different than cutting him. Might I add, that while you referred to Molitor deciding whether he wants to deal with Ricky any further, I promise you that this is one decision he will not make.
  4. An insecure Minnesotan? Never heard of such a thing! We just want to be liked, and never have anyone say anything negative about our state, our teams, or our Funeral Hotdish!
  5. Hmmm,so far slightly underwhelming, but I just got up and I have all day. Let me know when you get to the good parts,I don't want to miss anything!
  6. While this is a possibility, I want to remind posters that any form of mathematics, while allowed, is highly discouraged in GT!
  7. I always thought there was a chance that Dougie might have been a little too stringent for Ryans taste. Ryan does not appear one to be open to lengthily discussion on a topic. Regardless, in the book Moneyball the author made it clear that major league teams are drafted and rostered by the GM. The manager makes due with what he is handed. I doubt Molly had a say in Sano playing OF. In fact even the spot, RF, was chosen for him. Molly was a Sano in LF guy, until Ryan made him a Sano in RF convert!
  8. And therein would lie a Twins weakness. They would keep him. And repeat the whole process again next year. Yes, an arguement could be made that he then becomes "worth" the money? My counter is, if he is worth the trade, trade him and move on. I will acknowledge that injuries and other unforeseens complicate this simplistic approach. But ya gotta start somewhere. Which is where I still think Duffey is going, somewhere in out state NY. You have one more mediocre Duffey start, and one more Nolasco gem (for him) and I will write the press release!
  9. Ah, the core issue! If the Twins move Rinky to the BP and an average BP salary is what? 2M? They are losing 10M a year on him. Looking at it that way, cutting him costs 2M not 10M. For bankers this should be an easy call. OK, but that's not going to happen. His agent was likely just letting the Twins know ahead of time that his client was a veteran SP, and if they thought he would merrily go to the pen, he wanted them to know they were badly mistaken. Young guys like Duffey have to pitch themselves UNTO a team. Veterans like Rinky, have to pitch themselves OFF. Add the 10M into the equation, and your new number 4 starter is Nolasco. and has been, barring injury from last November. Anyone who thinks 25 man rosters are set by talent levels, is not being realistic. As for paying him, several posters in another article on the topic said that Rinky has reached certain veteran years of service levels that would preclude the team from DFA'ing him and not paying him, even if he refuses assignments? Anyone know the rules on this?
  10. Thanks. And I don't disagree with your thoughts. My concern is that the Twins will do what they usually do, not what many would consider sensible. Needless to say, I understand that it ain't my money, or my ego (Ryans) on the line. But they normally acquiesce to veterans, Duffey has options, and is complicating things by not pitching well so far. I also can't see them wanting an unhappy veteran in the pen, and your note from his agent is just the opening shot! They often take the path of least resistance, and if Nolasco is still able to crawl to the top of the mound, that might be the defining standard? And as much as I hate to say it, they may decide that they have to let him start, either he is at a minimal, satisfactory, or he flames out, leaving Nolasco with no arguement over his disposition.
  11. I can't speak to either of the above views. But they are really in a corner with Nolasco. Even if he would "accept" a mid reliever role, that's worth what per year. Meaning the difference is in essence a loss to the team. Molitor may have said that Duffey is penciled in, but it may have been a message to Ryan. It's been done before. But the fact is that managers have virtually no say in the 25 man roster. Those decisions are made in the front office, and there is no way talent is the number one criteria considered. I have said all winter that there is no way Ricky doesn't go north as a SP. for him to not do so, would retire Ryan to deviate from one or more long time practices. In this case I don't see it happening!
  12. It is good to see our excellent SP staff will be ready to go day one!
  13. Quentin was an interesting "fit" for this team, since we are devoid of that style of player? Which makes me wonder why he signed here of all places. I for one, would look for a team with that spot as a glaring weakness, not one filled with a new FA, young players out of options, and a gifted hitter being misplaced in the OF. Something is amiss!
  14. I don't see a way out of the Nolasco mess. If he pitches well even just two more outings, he ends up in the rotation. Then if he is even mediocre he stays. They can't trade that contract, at least for months, they won't eat the salary, and they are not putting him in the pen. I do hope Duffey is looking for a place to live in Rochester.
  15. It's very difficult and frustrating to deal with someone who has that addiction. For one thing it's a "legal" addiction. No jail time for buying booze. So your addiction is in essence socially acceptable. Unless you have a car accident, or are a "mean drunk", your illness will be overlooked or ignored by all but your closest family. And they have no control over you, and nothing anyone can do or say will make or coerce you into treatment. And if by that rarest of chances, they do, it has little chance of sticking. It has to come from you. That's a time warn phrase, but absolutely nothing else is of consequence until that has happened! I was never a CC fan, I always got a kick out of the Twins bunting on him. This is yet another reminder, that what we know from watching players on the field, is pretty minsicule.
  16. Two other issues that stifle the Twins in moving assets for prospects. The refusal of Ownership/FO to eat a bad contract. And the oft stated Ryan belief that you don't sign a FA, or extend an existing player and then trade them. His spoken belief is that players won't sign with a team if they think they could be traded in the first year or two of a contract. That philosophy prohibits you from catching lightening in a bottle and making a move. See Willingham and Suzuki. Or for that matter an extended Dozier. A team like the Twins in 2014 had no business keeping Kurt after the AS break. Pinto could have finished the season, what difference would it have made?
  17. I don't see a problem, most teams would love to only strike out at 5/9............ Whoops, I might have misread this post?
  18. Clutterheart! Don't fall for this scam! I went to meet Brock and have some cake when I hit 1000! Turns out all he brought was a Hostess Cupcake! Not only that, he texted me on the way over and had me stop at Starbucks for two lattes! He tried to tell me that at 10,000 you get a steak dinner at Murrays with Sid, but later I found out it was actually a Happy Meal at Mac Don's with Chief!
  19. In a way, what the FO does with Nolasco will be an indicator on whether it's business as usual. If he is in the rotation solely based on his veteran contract status, that's not a good sign. Signing him just didn't work out, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet, and move on!
  20. If the Twins actually bring in some of those young power arms, AND let them acclimate before the 3:10 leaves for Rochester, (See Tonkin) then I am bullish on the pen. Till then, Grizzly Bearish. A somewhat ignored issue is still Perkins for a whole season. As for the analogy to the Cards stockpiling SP talent in the pen, the Cards likely don't have one of their better starters in the pen, and are using several less talented heavily contracted players in front of them. I admit I am not a Card follower, but the rotation does seem much better overall than ours. Bulls, Bears, and Aardvarks aside, nice article, thank you.
  21. Its easy to tell you are not from MN! No one here would be caught dead using a word like colloquialisms! We have our own unique form of speech!
  22. You should talk to your agent, didn't he tell you that you were a non roster invitee? This doesn't happen to a Scott Boras client!
