  1. is there any truth to the rumor that North was attacked by Mama Grizzly and will have to crawl to the North Star Line, and then Light Rail to make a July game?
  2. You have made this season sound incrediblily easy. I am not sold on 87 wins, but I agree with some points. I think Buxton will end up just fine. The learning curve will cause consternation, but he will survive and eventually excel. Sanos season will depend on his legs. If he pulls or twists something, whether or not he can catch a fly ball is a moot point. Last year, when he "couldn't" play defensively he was the DH, this year Park is there. Which brings us to Park. He still hasn't faced a concerted effort to get him out. That's going to be the test. The math bothers me. If you SO that often against A level pitching why are you going to improve moving up 4 spots? The starting pitching? Meh? Average, pitchers, average results. The BP? I feel the sam about the defense. One standout defensive player, Buxton, on a team with extreme PTC. That short leash you mentioned will make or break the season. Wins in April and May actually do count. The team is headed in the right direction, slowly. But if you take a team of average players, and expect them to exceed expectations every year, thats not reasonable. And the tendencies of this FO to sit on its hands until mid June will not help if that plan goes awry.
  3. By now it seems obvious that what the manager wants as far as roster decisions has little impact, probably on most clubs, but surely in MN. This was true during the Gardenhire era also. The monetary and contractural considerations override almost everything else. It's why, when Molitor tells Duffey it's his job to lose, and makes it clear he sees Sano in LF, those comments are messages to the FO, which seem to have little or no bearing on roster decisions. GM are not going to spend 12M a year on a pitcher, and let the manager turn him into a long reliever. A move like that is above Molly's pay grade!
  4. To me the word competition would denote a contest between two persons, or entities. While these parties might not be of equal talent, the rules should be equitable. The operative word here is "should". If Duffey, Nolasco was a prize fight, Duffey as the challenger would not have to just be ahead on points, he would have had to beat Nolasco into the canvas. I don't think I have ever seen this much suspense over something that, short of injury, had no other obvious outcome. Throw in the fact that the Nolasco camp already raised a fuss over a BP slot, that moving Ricky to the pen meant likely losing Tonkin, and that 12M long relievers are pretty rare, and this was virtually preordained!
  5. Suzuki had better be a first half bust or the Twins will sign him to another two year extension! My bust is more defined. (That did not come out right) I think it will be The Sano Experiment! Not necessarily Miguel, I think he will hit, and hit well. But defensively he will be past bad for either of two reasons. A lack of commitment to the glove side of that position, or injury. You can get injured anywhere, but this move hiked the percentages considerably.
  6. There are always two sides to an issue. On the face of it the Twins were/are stacked with DH style hitters, so why would a guy who's only real slot was DH come to this particular team. We're the Twins his only option? Or did he look at the teams history, which has been veteran oriented, and hope it would sway things in his favor. This never seemed a match made in heaven. Be that as it may, good luck to him. I bet it is not easy to hang it up when you still want to play!
  7. When you stack your roster with hit first/field second corner players, it is a conscious decision. It's not bad luck, or unavoidable. My basic philosophy of baseball for years has been: You can't beat teams to death with your bats. Hitting comes and goes, often, and quickly. Pitching first, defense second, hitting third! The Twins are set up completely backwards.
  8. Duffey was never pitching against Nolasco, he was competing against Nolascos Contract!
  9. ................... in moms basement?
  10. As an aside, I wish that when discussing retaliation people would remember there is a huge difference between plunking someone in the ass, for a perceived transgression, and head hunting. I can live with the former, the other is never ever acceptable.
  11. I thought Patrick made it fairly clear that there is a difference between talent, and effort. He did not doubt the talent, he even alluded to it. He did doubt the effort. His take on management was interesting. He did not throw them under the bus for moving him, but he acknowledged they have had little success in getting into his head, I would love to take the simplest route and say this is Sano reacting to the move, and while some of it may be, I doubt that the answer is that easy. One may disagree with Pat, but he knows more about baseball than 90% of the writers out there.
  12. I was here for 2½ weeks in early February and was at the ballpark most days to do a radio show. Sano was doing low-key drills with early arrivers for a couple of days, and then he was gone. The word was he had gone to New York for a weekend for a well-paid autograph gig, and he would be back early the next week. He wound up going back to the Dominican Republic and stayed for two weeks, until camp was ready to open." >>>>>>>. So what do we make of the pablum that LEN, Bernadino, and the rest have been writing? Either Pat is completely wrong, or the others are company shills, or totally obtuse. I had wondered about Sano's buying into RF because of this: what you don't hear, is often times more telling than what you do hear. And what you did not hear wan any tales of Sano "work in his tail off" or "goin about his business" before camp opened. Mention was made of other players but his name was conspicuously absent.
  13. He is the only left handed SP, and the poster boy for PTC. This decision had about as much suspense as the ending to the OJ TV series!
  14. "What would "The Maestro" have had to do to survive camp? 4 spots! He ain't a catcher, or an IF'er, he isn't a big stick, nor is he a utility guy like Santana. And who would really move Arcia to keep him? There are certainly years where there is legitimate competitions for spots in ST. But with the exception of the lower half of the BP, I don't think anyone can seriously think any others existed this year!
  15. By the time Gardy was let go, it was time. That said, Gardy didn't (always) get what he wanted. He was quoted numerous times about his wish to have certain players stay on the roster who were shipped out. I don't know how much influence a manager has in this era, but there is no doubt that the GM makes the final call. The field roster could have been announced in January. Any doubts about Buxtons position were erased when they put Sano in RF. The only mini surprise was that we did not have the annual " reunion tour" with Benson or Mastro being this years guest. But the option issue on Santana and Arcia likely settled that. I am pretty sure the rotation will turn out the same way. One guy is a big buck vet, who has to avoid pitching himself off the rotation, the other guy is a rookie, with options, who has to pitch himself on. Spending too much time analyzing performances can sometimes be fruitless. Some time has to be spent viewing the history of the guy making the decisions, his past is your prologue!
  16. "Ryan dispelled the notion that the two are competing head-to-head" >>>>>>>. Meaning either Milone is still on the bubble? Or Ryan is moving May back to the rotation? Or he felt a need to test either our sense of humor, or our intelligence? Personally I'm going with intelligence!
  17. I missed that. It does explain the perplexing get.
  18. 2)? Where did you read/hear Molitor say that? It's not that I doubt it, because it's always been my conjecture that it's not the Twins Way to go high enough to get a sought after FA style player. Ergo, they did, and now what the bleep do we do with him? Of course that's just me thinking from moms basement!
  19. But is he faster than Buxtons cap? To answer the initial question, A! The game is tied, you get to bat again! Dont over manage!
  20. Take the light rail instead of the bus?
  21. Let's see? If Arcia gets enough AB's he hits 20-30 HR's? And if you set the O/U for Park at 19.5 "I'd probably take the over"? An interesting, but not very glowing analysis of Park. The Twins would have the possibility of a pretty good DH platoon, if they wanted to. But they haven't been much for that concept in the past. He also says Arcia will hit 20 or 30 HR's for someone if given enough plate appearances. Sadly that likely won't be here. I do think he goes north, but I don't think he will excel in a situation with scattered AB's.
  22. But what if you weren't around lately, like on the space shuttle? Or worse, if your mom didn't have internet in her basement. Remember, there are almost a billion Chinese who do not know how to spell Plouffe!
  23. Whether Ryan was being intentional or obtuse, discussing SO rates for the Twins, and ignoring their historical levels is similar to blaming a specific iceberg for the demise of the Titanic! Actually both problems have been around long before the incident in question!
  24. Terry Ryan is quick to point out that his team's last-place ranking is “a little deceiving” since they received only partial seasons from May and Kevin Jepsen, and Glen Perkins was not himself after the All-Star break.>>>>> Did Ryan say who was injured all the other years the Twins were ranked that low? It must have been an unfortunate set of circumstances for it to be an annual event? The May situation is inevitable and unfortunate.the inevitable is that he is the logical talent to slot into the pen. But it's logical because of the unfortunate. That being that the Twins won't eat had contracts, meaning the SP roster is stuffed, won't bring up young SO type pitchers, and weren't honest with him last winter, that barring an injury or uninitiated trade, he was BP bound. A FO blows smoke all the time, but this one was transparent and ham handed!
