  1. I like the top 10 listed here. I would remove Vargas and add Goodrum or Michael (I'm still high on him) but can't quibble with 1-6.
  2. You're supposing they're perfect and don't make any mistakes. I knew more than they did about Jeff Gray, that's apparent. Slama will likely never amount to anything, but there's a problem with the process here. Dangit, I was supposed to have put in a :-) thing in my first post so you didn't view my post as a personal attack. Hope you didn't.
  3. But that supposes someone named "snepp" with a TMNT avatar, living in South Dakota, knows more than a ML front office. Slama was a 39th rd pick out of San Diego. He's had injury issues that last two years that didn't allow him to hit even 40ip either season. He's been exposed to the rule V draft and not selected by other teams. The team doesn't think his stuff will work at this level. He might turn into Jeff Gray 2.0 but I don't get why so much ink (so to speak) is spent on this guy. But, as I said, sign me on the petition.
  4. Just a couple of suggestions on your letter. First, "We are the fans who spend hours of our day watching a ballclub that has let us down and we will probably continue to do so." That'll make him want to respond. Second, "We want to know why you won’t give another opportunity to Anthony Slama." The Twins have already told you why they won't do so - they don't think his stuff will work at the ML level. What you really want is for the Twins to call him up despite what the Twins have concluded on Slama. If you want him up, say so. If you just want a reason for him staying in the minors, be prepared for a "his stuff won't play" response. In any event, I've never given a crap about the free Slama movement but you can add my name.
  5. Yeah, I linked the fangraphs guy b/c that was the first time I'd seen someone suggest Kepler higher than Starling (and later in the chat he suggested Buxton was a lot higher than Starling). I don't think Kepler will be on any top 100 lists next year but it's good to see him get some recognition. Nice season for a lot of Twins prospects this year.
  6. In today's fangraphs chat: "Which prospect would you put more stock in: Bubba Starling or Max Kepler? Both have athleticism for days, Kepler currently has better numbers and is also a year younger but is also repeating the level........ " Newman: "I'd rather have Kepler. Hands down." Pretty interesting. Starling was BA #24 after he was picked 5th in the loaded 2011 draft.
  7. Keep in mind that the Twins didn't really want to keep Santana around. While most of that was cost, certainly some of it was fear of how a pitcher will age. Santana went to the Mets at 29 - most of the FA are older than that - and had one full season followed by four seasons disrupted by injuries. It's unrealistic to expect that the Twins are going to change their philosophy on big long term contracts now - esp since Morneau and Mauer both got hurt in their long term contracts. I don't think Ryan is going to offer more than a 3 yr deal for anyone. I suspect Ryan will try and find younger Diamond-type pitchers in smaller trades and trade Span for some players that none of us will be overly excited about. He'll also make some more 1 yr deals to guys like Pavano/Marquis. One name that could happen for us is Dan Haren. He's having an awful year in LA so he might take a one year make good deal again and Target Field could be a good fit for him (although if does do a 1yr deal, I think Oakland is a more realistic option).
  8. One thing I like about Plouffe was that, even before the season started, Ryan thought his bat would play in a corner position. I trust Ryan on that sort of thing so let's see how he does when he's healed up.
  9. And you thought the Twins were the only team dealing with injuries. Zimmer is out 6-8 weeks but won't need TJ surgery. 4 KC pitchers have needed TJ this year. Fan base a bit upset. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/8/24/3265961/8-24-milb-gameday-thread
  10. Bullock was turned into Diamond, so that was ok. Tootle and Bashore had arm injuries but I liked the risk.
  11. I still didn't see a Berrios adopt a prospect so, in today's BA hot sheet: "The Scoop: Few players from the 2012 draft have dominated in their pro debuts quite like Berrios. A supplemental first-round pick (32nd overall) out of Puerto Rico in June, Berrios has a 1.17 ERA and a sterling 49-4 K-BB mark across 30 2/3 innings between the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and the Appy League. While Berrios is filling up the zone with strikes, he's also doing it with power, as he's shown a fastball in the low- to mid-90s that has reached as high as 98 mph. It's very early, but the Twins may have gotten a steal here."
  12. I thought I read somewhere that the Twins liked Trout, his dad had a connection to them, but they had Gibson and Storen (among others) ranked above him. Hindsight is 20/20 but can't blame the Twins.
  13. Yeah, it's stupid.
  14. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/appy-league-review-minnesota-twins-prospects/#comment-3152208 Includes a write up on DJ Hicks (good org guy but not a prospect), Kepler (bat will play at a corner spot), and two sleepers Polanco (great athlete but small. "At second base, Polanco teamed up with shortstop Niko Goodrum and centerfielder Byron Buxton to form an athletic, up-the-middle trio which would have made the Texas Rangers proud") and Pimental (should be converted to pitcher). Will have longer write ups on Buxton, Harrison and Goodrum later. Also an interesting discussion of the park and city.
  15. Well that seems like a nice thing he's doing. Thanks for posting, Seth.
  16. Not a huge surprise, he was considered one of the fastest to the majors college players and he came from a great baseball conference. I don't think the Twins should have taken him though. (Of course, once he gets to Seattle, he'll hit like Nick Punto ...)
  17. I think if it was close, you'd have a point but Buxton seemed BPA over the three college pitchers by a fair margin to the Twins. (Giolito, if healthy, would be another story). For whatever it's worth, BA ranked the new draft picks and put Buxton at 22 (right before Sano), Gausman at 33, Zimmer at 38. Appel would've been around 32. All three pitchers had question marks (of the three, I preferred Zimmer) and none were locks to be a true ace. Buxton could bust, of course, but, if it goes right, he could also be another Grady Sizemore or Justin Upton type player. It's worth taking that risk, IMHO. (I also would've been ok with the Twins taking Correa if he was there at #2). The Twins did add a good, quick to the majors type starter in Berrios and, while I wish they had taken a flyer on Johnson or Brown, they at least got some bodies in a weak draft that might actually help the ML team.
  18. Bit of an understatement. Hit rock bottom, grabbed a shovel kept digging, hit a water pipe, started drowning .... At least Arcia and Hicks had good years for us.
  19. I've said since Johnson took over the draft, he's been much more focused on taking hard throwers than Radcliff was - Hunt, Gutierrez, Bullock, Williams, Boer, Tootle, etc were all flame throwers. Prior to that the Twins were more likely to take control pitchers - Duensing, Baker, Slowey, Blackburn, etc. But even that's not quite a true sample. Radcliff took Garza (who fell to him), Johnson, Crain and Durbin and Johnson took Gibson (who fell to him), Wimmers and Bashore. I think fans tend to get a little too focused on presumed storylines and ignore what was actually done. Much of the reason the Twins took control arms from 02-07 was because they were drafting in the later half of the first round. Johnson has focused on harder throwers but has been required to pick a lot of relief arms.
  20. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/08/bartolo-colon-fails-mlb-drug-test.html Too much testosterone in Mr. Colon. First a Giant and now an A, what's going on in the Bay area?
  21. I liked the Twins draft - esp the Buxton, Berrios and Walker picks. I would have preferred Pierce Johnson over Luke Bard with the 2nd supp pick and Mitch Brown (MN HS pitcher) with our first pick of the second round. But in both cases, i admit to not knowing nearly as much as the Twins.
  22. I think the team did a pretty good job fixing/restocking the bullpen, honestly. Coming into the season that was everyone's nightmare. Before the season there wasn't a lot of concern over the starting pitching (some but it fell behind the bullpen and lineup). As to the medical staff, I'm interested in what Ryan says about it. I'm not an expert so I won't accuse them of screwing things up (others are doing that enough anyway). But we certainly aren't the only team going ballistic over our medical staff - KC and Boston are right there with us.
  23. Too bad. I liked Pavano. And this certainly doesn't look good for the medical staff. We'll see what Ryan says about it.
  24. Yeah, it would crush us to lose him for an extra week. We may not finish ahead of the Royals! I suspect we care more about keeping his trade value high than catching the Royals ....
