  1. I was thinking about this the other day. What if Gray starts having tightness in his forearm, ala Gibson, and sees a drop in velocity? Houston panics and takes one of the GA OFers to save money and help create a really good young core, since Correa isn't going to fly to the majors. Cubs pounce on Appel. Rockies are left wondering about some mysterious arm issue and have been falling in love with Bryant's pull power at Coors field. They take Bryant leaving Gray to fall to us. We take him. Four months later, he needs TJ surgery.
  2. It's an interesting question. I guess it depends on how you view it. Are we looking at one year or one period over a few years? Are we only looking at ranked prospects or are we looking at how they actually did? I'm not sure. Looking at BA rankings, we have 6 in the top 72 and two in the top 10. That's pretty impressive and might be a one year best for the Twins. On the other hand, the 03-06 Twins managed to have 5 different players ranked in the top 20 including a #1 and #6 (and Restovich was ranked 37, higher than any other twin on this years list after Sano/Buxton). And on the third hand, the early late90s/early 2000s also gave the Twins guys like AJ, Santana, Koskie, Dougie Baseball and Jacque Jones who were never ranked but were obviously very good ball players. The 03 single year ranked Twins had pretty impressive results, even though it was only 3 guys really. Mauer, Morneau and Cuddyer combined to give the Twins 2 MVPs, 10 all-star seasons, 6 silver sluggers and nearly 75 WAR. And that year's org top 10 also included Span, Kubel and Lew Ford. So that was a good year. But I think this group, with its depth, should hopefully be better. And next year we'll add the #4 draft pick to that list to go along with it. I think from a depth perspective, this is easily the best group of prospects we've had over a few years. Whether they turn out is a different question but I love the depth.
  3. I think we're all over thinking this. Appel was one of very few people to not sign. Whomever the Twins take will sign for roughly slot. It might get ansty and scary but they'll sign. Appel is the exception, not the rule. Even for Boras.
  4. I think the Mets really hurt him by keeping him at the ML level but not playing him his rookie year. He's turning into a pretty good player but Span was the better CF entering this year, so I think the Twins were right to go with Span. I'm still not that bothered by the Santana trade as others are. We knew we were going to trade him, we got back two top 60 prospects and two more pitching prospects. We flipped one for Rauch. Gomez gave us a few moments and one season of Hardy. I'm sure there have been worse trades in Twins history.
  5. The next nugget says " There is a wide range of opinions about high school catcher Reese McGuire, who might go anywhere from No. 4 to No. 21, Churchill writes. The Pirates have scouted McGuire heavily and have two picks in that range. Geez, I guess I don't know enough about McGuire but I sure hope he's not our #4 pick.
  6. I assume every single one of us would like to see a crazy scenario where Appel or Gray falls to us at #4 but, assuming those two are gone in the first two picks, how to hope the draft falls for us, a month out? I think Colorado takes Bryant so we'll take Manaea. In the 2nd round, I could see someone like Ryan Boldt falling to them.
  7. A future potential lineup with an OF of Arcia, Buxton, Hicks and an IF with Sano and Bryant at the corners could potentially be pretty good. Obviously a long way off but Sano and Buxton look like real things and Hicks/Arcia are already up.
  8. They have 8.5m to spend on the draft (I think they have another 3.7 on international but they aren't combined). If they don't sign #4 pick, they lose the 4.5m slotted by MLB for that pick. They can't use it elsewhere. If they don't sign the #4 pick and have the #7 pick from their record, next years draft bonus would be pretty high (last year the Twins had the highest pool because they had the 2nd pick but also two supp picks).
  9. Agree with most. He's a good long reliever which, on this team, is needed. I think Gibson will come up fairly soon. He's looking pretty good at AAA. I don't know how much longer the team can keep letting Pelfrey pitch this badly.
  10. Interesting article. Going by age, the Kernals have two 19 year olds (Buxton and Polanco), a 20 year old (Harrison) and two 21 year olds (Walker and Goodrum) who are all arguably top 15 team prospects. The avg age is 21 in that league. They talked about JD Williams getting a few thing together but he's also a touch old for the league (22) - not too much but a bit. I wonder how much of his improvement is being old for the level. Didn't sound like Buxton would spend too much more time down there. He's killing that league. 3rd in avg, 2nd in OBP (first is a 22 year old), 1 in slg and OPS. 1st in BB, 3rd in HR, 4 in SB. Wow. Even after Buxton moves up, the Kernals will eventually get Kepler and Bard. Should be a pretty fun team to watch all year.
  11. But, as you said, you didn't know.
  12. Hicks is hitting .219/.366/.343 with 8 walks to 7 Ks and a double and triple in the 12 games since he was moved down the order. Not great but real improvement over his first 10 games.
  13. Fun read. Really excited to see if Buxton could get promoted to high A. A lineup with him, Rosario and Sano would get a lot of coverage.
  14. I think it's generally considered better. I know in a ask BA a few weeks ago, they listed next years potential #1 ahead of both Appel and Gray, right now. That said, I don't want to see us not sign someone this year. I suspect we'll still have a top 10, maybe top 5 pick (I think Ryan will trade Willingham and Morneau and the Twins won't remain a .500 team). So no point in missing a year of development. But I also think that Stewart would take the 4.5m we'd offer.
  15. That seemed overly dickish. Bryant's value as #4 pick is partially dependent on him playing third. If the Twins move him to RF, I'm not sure he's worth the pick (maybe his bat is worth it, his RH bat at TF could be very exciting). I think the Twins will consider that when they are considering the group of players in the tier that they are picking and I suspect that none of the players they are considering will have separated themselves so much that it wouldn't be an issue, thus I think they'll go with a pitcher over Bryant. Not so sure why you got your panties in a wad over that.
  16. I like your thinking and wouldn't be opposed to either, BUT ... If they take Bryant, he'd head to A+ where we already have Sano working at third so one of them would be moved to RF. Bryant might not be worth the #4 pick if he's a RFer. I know you don't draft for need at #4 but I think that would be a tie breaker point against Bryant. Unless they really love that bat, I don't see it happening (and I love Bryant. I would actually be very happy to see us have him). I could see the Twins taking Stewart - they took Berrios last year - but I think they'd want more of a sure thing at #4 than a HS arm.
  17. Right now I think the Twins will take either Shipley or Manaea but it'll be interesting to see how the 3-8 prospects start shaking themselves out.
  18. I'm not going to worry about Mauer. He knows how to hit and he'll be fine.
  19. Interesting mention of Powell. I remember when Smith took over, Ryan wanted to concentrate and improve our scouting in the SE, specifically GA. I think his first year being in charge of the SE was when we took Goodrum in the 2nd round. Did we bring Powell to the org just in the last few years? Edit: I looked it up, we brought Powell in around that time. Twins make changes in scouting department | twinsbaseball.com: Official Info
  20. Has someone linked this yet? Y! SPORTS Fun part, "Nobody had a better month on the farm than the Twins, who saw Sano and Buxton translate two of the best raw toolsets in the minor leagues into matching production." Right now, I think I'd put Buxton ahead of Sano. Both could be top 5 prospects next year. Sweet.
  21. Well, it's a year later and Mackey has an article up on this trade: Mackey: The Twins have already won the Francisco Liriano trade | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins He suggests that Ryan won this trade. Ryan was more diplomatic but Mackey points out that the Twins have added a strong UI type in Escobar and Hernandez has been serviceable. Seems like we got two decent pieces for Liriano. Not a bad trade.
  22. I honestly don't know but I had thought that Dewin (or what ever his name is) +/- system did use range factor to a pretty big degree.
  23. Joe Posnanski linked to an article where the Oakland A's internal WAR had Cabrera ahead of Trout last year. The take away from that seems to be that the A's and WAR probably differed greatly on how they measured/valued defense and games played.
  24. Maybe. But I'm not sure there was really much there. Hardy had a career year the first year after he left us but has been pretty awful since then, posting a 78 OPS+ since the 2012 season.
