  1. Other than PED Ortiz, what good hitters have the Twins ruined/wasted?
  2. Hope you're right. I was wondering if he might be better suited moving to the pen like Guerrier and Perkins.
  3. It's been an enjoyable season (except for the KC series). Twins have a pretty rough run of it in May - this 10 game road trip is followed by home series against Balt, both Sox's and then another road trip to Atlanta, Det and Milwaukee. I'd be pretty happy if they're still around .500 at that point.
  4. Jeremy's point is mostly right. Prior to changing the signing date a lot of prospects didn't sign until Aug 15 and then didn't get any professional work that first year. Machado played in 9 games after he signed, for instance. Trout was a late first round pick who signed for slot right away so he did play a lot his first year but that was the exception. Had Buxton wanted more than slot under the old rules, the commissioner wouldn't have approved his signing until Aug 15 and the Twins probably wouldn't have seen him play that first year. I think that was the point Jeremy was making.
  5. Hopefully that's how it works out. Maybe the Twins trade for a 3B prospect or draft Bryant but Plouffe doesn't really seem to be part of the core of any future. He might stick around to be a RH bench bat but that's probably his realistic role on a good team.
  6. I think Gardy will pretty much mix and match his 3 infielder spots (SS, 2B and 3B) all season. I think Plouffe could be a platoon DH/RF type player fairly soon but for now will be in the 3B conversation.
  7. I'm ok with Plouffe get benched last night. According to the strip, the team was concerned that the Rangers would be pulling shots off our LH starter. And it's not like Plouffe is hitting that well anyway. I'm not sure how much longer the team can use him at third. He might end up being part of a platoon down the road.
  8. I suppose we'll do an update here. Through 19 games the switch hitting Polanco is hitting a pretty darn good .312/.341/.455 while mostly hitting 3rd in Cedar Rapids. (He's hitting lefties a lot better but the sample size is so small it's not really worth discussing yet). All but one of his games have come at second base (not counting his DH days). He's basically playing about as well as you good reasonably expect from a sleeper prospect and still be considered part of the Twins future. He's a solid part of the low A team. If you wanted to concern yourself, you'd note that he's walking in less than 5% of his PA which might suggest plate discipline issues down the road as he moves up the ladder. But it's a bit early to worry about that. I still don't think he's a top 10 prospect for us but he's an interesting one to watch. He might end up being the second baseman of the future if Rosario fails.
  9. I think Kab21 has this about right. Players mostly dictate how fast they move and the Twins do seem more willing to move elite prospects than the critics are suggesting.
  10. The Twins have occasionally moved prospects a couple levels - Mauer, Arcia, Garza, Baker, Gibson, Morneau and even Kubel. I think Buxton is more likely to move this year than Sano was last year because he's showing much better plate discipline. If he's still hitting like this in a couple weeks, I think they have to move him up.
  11. There's a thread somewhere about Windle. I'm not sure if he'll be there at 43 but I agree he's certainly in the discussion.
  12. I think one of the problems I have with attacking the Twins on this is that no one knows how well other teams handle the same issue. Some idiot will post some crap about JJ Hardy in Baltimore as if that makes the case. The only study I've seen on how teams stay healthy was the fangraphs link I posted and, according to that, the Twins were pretty good over a 10 year period.
  13. 1) If Hicks needs to go down, they'll find someone (Benson or a AAAA) to take his place. Mastro is a nice player but hardly irreplaceable. 2) Sounds like it. 3) You only pay attention to the Twins but I'm sure it's a somewhat fairly often occurrence. Orioles fans are going nuts over uber prospect Bundy needing a second MRI despite the first one looking great, for instance. Fangraphs did a study, using 10 years worth of data on DL trips. It found that the Twins were one of the healthier teams, by that model. Only three teams had lost fewer days to the DL. I know one common complaint is that the team doesn't use the DL fast enough (although I'm sure that's a common problem, too) so games missed while not on the DL wouldn't be counted but even if you added another 1000 days to their total, they'd still be in the lower half.
  14. I think one thing that is being overlooked to some extent is that the Twins needed pitchers who could pitch in April. They (likely) knew that they could add Gibson and maybe Hendriks, May or Meyer as the season progressed. So even if Correia turns into Ortiz in May (and he is younger and was always a better pitcher than Ramon), Correia, Worley and Pelfrey are at least eating a few innings that didn't have to go to Walters and Hernandez. That does have real value, even if it is a SSS. The other thread lists a lot of the pitchers that were under consideration and most of them would have made April a worse month for us and made the bullpen eat more innings than they should have.
  15. BA had an article today on Thurman, noting that Thurman is moving up and likely a 2nd round pick and possible higher. UC Irvine's Andrew Thurman Generating Second-Round Buzz - BaseballAmerica.com
  16. I gotta admit, I really do enjoy the unwritten rules of baseball (The Baseball Codes | Facebook: www.facebook.com/baseballcodes; Twitter: @BaseballCodes and the same titled book are really great). It seems that in this case, as already mentioned, the codes weren't followed anyway.
  17. Nice list! Mayo has Crawford and M. Gonzalez at 18 and 19 on his draft list. I really liked Gonzalez as a 2nd rounder but apparently he's played himself up the list. Crawford had been #10 on his list before. Wall is 25. I don't think he'd fall to 43 either. I think any of the rest could be there at 43 I'd be pretty happy with Blair, Ziomak or Thurman. I wonder if the Twins might take Arkansas closer Suggs in the 2nd round. They've been targeting power arms and he's got a good one. Might be a quick to the majors relief arm. And I'm sure they've scouted the crap out of him since he's team mates with Stanek.
  18. If they stay healthy they have a pretty solid lineup. Cuddy's good in odd years. As someone stated, Tulo and Gonzalez are great players. The rotation is probably as questionable as ours (which is why they'll draft a pitcher at #3, darn it).
  19. I like what Hicks has been doing since being moved. I'm not 100% sure that his swing is ok though. He certainly seems to have a good eye but he hasn't really made a lot of good contact, especially from the left side. His hit yesterday was an ugly roller that found a hole, not a good hit. On the other hand, I think with his eye, it'll make it easier for him to start making better swings.
  20. Nice write up Jeremy. So one possible scenario for the Twins could be: Astros take Stewart and save a few bucks, Cubs jump on Grey. Rockies decide not to deal with Appel and take a bat they can dream on leaving Appel for the Twins at #4. It's a dream though. Rockies have taken a pitcher first in 3/4 last drafts and their system is strong in hitting and weak in pitching. It would be hard to see them not taking Appel or Grey if he slipped to them.
  21. Actually, Deron Johnson has been doing that since he took over the draft in 08. The pitches he's taken have generally been high risk power arms - Bullock, Bashore, Gibson, Bard, Hunt, Gutierrez, Bullock, Chargios, Boer, Berrios (and, apparently, he gets so excited about them, he doesn't usually get past the "B"s list). Although it isn't as simple as that - Johnson did take a control guy like Wimmers and Radcliff took fireballers like Garza, Johnson, Durbin and Crain.
  22. So brave of you to give up the rights of others like that.
  23. I wonder how many people are bothered by martial law being placed on Boston for a stupid 19 year old kid.
  24. If the first three picks are pitchers, I wouldn't be upset if we got Bryant.
  25. From the article: "The list of catchers with at least 1,000 hits, 250 doubles and 500 walks before their 30th birthday is a short one. There's Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Gary Carter and Mickey Cochrane, along with eight-time All-Star Ted Simmons. Then there's Joe Mauer." Ted Simmons is really underrated.
