  1. We also might be over reacting to stats and ignoring the scouting stuff - a theme that dominated the Anthony Slama threads. In his last two chats, KLaw has been pretty pessimistic about Berrios and doesn't think he's a top 100 prospect. I know other prospect guys like Berrios more but it is worth taking a moment and remembering that there is more to this than just stat lines. That said, I hope he gets to AA this season.
  2. Constantly proving he doesn't understand the unwritten rules ...
  3. I also suspect, but am not sure, that pitches pitch the hitters to pull by pitching in so it'll be harder to lay a bunt down the 3rd base side.
  4. What do you think his trade value was in 2012 and what do you think it is now? Is it substantially different in your view? I don't think it is. Right now, his RH power and strong OBP is still the hardest thing to find in baseball and a team could jump on that in the home stretch. I think at least some teams will find him more enticing if they don't have to commit several more years and several more million to him.
  5. At this point, I'd call Meyer up and let him pitch out of the bullpen for 6 weeks and then give him 6-10 starts toward the end of the season. And put May in the rotation now.
  6. I think it's his back. Souhan's article suggested it was a lot more than "back spasms" and, if his back is tender, than a full torque swing might not feel that great. Maybe he's trying to battle through it instead of taking a DL trip. I usually don't rip on the Twins (enough people have that covered) but one thing they sometimes push too much is playing through pain - they basically resigned Capps b/c he played thru a wrist injury instead of going to the DL. And with all the crap he got in 2011 maybe Mauer's determined to stay off the DL.
  7. He's on the DL. He's probably more likely to be moved next year when he's healthy and the Twins have a better idea of their future.
  8. Coming into this season, I thought the most important things, even over record, was the development of Gibson, Arcia, Hicks, Pinto, Meyer, May, Dozier, Buxton, Sano and seeing how Hughes and Nolasco looked as future pieces. I also hoped a few other prospects stepped up. I figured anyone else that wasn't part of the 2016 future (Hammer, Correa, Pelfrey, Suzuki) or could be over valued and replaceable (Perkins) should be moved. I wouldn't shop him but if someone wants to overpay on Dozier, take it.
  9. I think it was a guy on fangraphs, but maybe it was Klaw, but anyhow, someone suggested that the Twins would get, at best, a #4 type pitching prospect for Hammer at the time and named Sean Gilmartin of Atlanta as a possibility.
  10. Man, I hate posts like this. Mauer was the best prospect in baseball, then he became the best player in baseball. He didn't do that b/c he wanted a contract. He doesn't dive to tag out Gardner at the plate if he isn't playing hard. He's apparently a nice quiet guy, that shouldn't be looked at as a weakness.
  11. Gah. Losing streaks, worst first baseman in baseball, Plouffe hurt, Sano and Buxton out, no offense lately .... but Gibson and Hughes both look like they will be legit arms in future rotations and May and Meyer have both put up nice numbers in AAA. Might as well get them up sooner rather than later. Despite injuries to Sano and Buxton, several prospects are doing very well. May and Meyer are dominating AAA hitters. Polanco looks like a stud. Berrios is having a real break out year and could be in AA soon. Vargas is hitting at AA and should be up in Sept if not earlier. Dozier's break over the last four months of 2013 don't look like a fluke. Arcia should be able to hit at this level. Santana is at least fun to watch. Hammer and Morales both look like they might get us something at the trade deadline.
  12. I'm glad Pino is getting his shot. Good luck to him.
  13. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23910 More for fun but ... Zunino goes #1 in this version. He's in the majors and, I guess, some defensive metrics must really love him. Buxton #2 and Correa #3. Berrios gets nabbed #15 - "Explanation: What Berrios lacks in ideal size, he more than makes up for with his stuff. He throws an easy mid-90s fastball with a low 70s curve and a low 80s breaking ball that moves more like a slider. Even more impressive, he can command and control all three pitches to both sides of the plate. Berrios' ceiling makes him a steal with the 15th pick. —Chris King"
  14. Yeah, I agree. Thought it was the best season. That said, it's already going differently than the books in large and small ways. Sansa's plot in the Aryie looks to be very different than the books, less marauding in the riverlands, Jojon died (and no Coldhands who I thought would become an important book character). Tommenin was aged a bit. A lot more Jamie in King's Landing. I thought they did about as well as they could with Dany in Mereen. It'll be interesting to see how they go forward with all that political stuff. I thought the Red Viper was perfect and am really looking forward to how they introduce the Dornish characters next year.
  15. Besides signing an ace, they could develop one. Both Meyer and Stewart have that ceiling. Santana obviously. And occasionally a #2 or 3 has a ace type season - Twins got one from Tapani in 91. Radke had a few. Joe Mays actually led the AL in ERA+ one year and was second in pitching WAR. I'd rather the Twins focused on developing a complete rotation rather than worrying about who the #1 pitcher is.
  16. I think the Twins end up as sellers. Morales will probably be the big prize we can move but Willingham and others might get us a few decent pieces too.
  17. A final record of 76-86 sounds about right. Nice improvement over last year.
  18. He's a different kind of prospect - he's thrown 150 innings or more the last three seasons. Durability is a big part of his make up. He should be throwing 110 or more pitches at this point. 120 is nothing to get worried about. Also, he should be called up before Darnell.
  19. So, it's been a bit but May has continued to be outstanding and really should be in the majors now. Last night he went 8.1ip, 3h, 2bb, 11k and 1ER. 120 pitches. He's a horse. And he did it against the Red Sox AAA team which had MLers and top prospects like Middlebrooks, Victorino, Cecchinni and Mookie Betts in it. On the season he's 7-4, 2.77 era, 74ip, 54h, 29bb, 78k. That's good enough for a 2.69bb/k ratio. For stat lovers, his stats aren't that out of line with last year - his K% and bb% are only slightly better than what he did in AA. But last year he had a babip of nearly .330. He still projects as a innings eating #3 or worse pitcher in the bigs and should replace Deduno at this point.
  20. RIP. Great player and he seemed like a good guy. Thoughts and prayers to his family.
  21. Maybe he goes to Korea or Japan.
  22. This court would side with billionaires over individuals 9 out of 10 times.
  23. I think Anderson does a fine job with the talent he is given. How do we not know he didn't get them to overachieve? A 100+ ERA from Cole De Vries? 2.4 WAR season from Diamond? Duduno isn't completely useless. Rehabbed Burton and Fein.
  24. So I sort get dragged into the World Cup b/c my co-worker is a huge fan of Mexico. And then I watch Brazil/Croatia and watch all the flopping and ****ty officiating and think, "Oh yeah, this really sucks."
  25. I'm not sure management did so much as it was LEN's opinion. But also, even if it was the Twins, most teams do this at some point. Earlier this season, the Nats manager called out freaking Bryce Harper. Torre publicly embarrassed ARoid. I'm not sure if Terry Collins comments on D'Arnaud are much different than the ones from Gardy on Hicks.
