  1. Which guys are being clogged? On one hand we're hearing that the Twins rushed Arcia and Hicks and others are complaining that - presumably - the minor leaguers aren't learning at the big league level. Twins don't spend money on FA and now Willingham and Nolasco shouldn't have been signed. I don't see anyone of any future importance being blocked. I don't really care if AJ Achter is up or not.
  2. I guess I don't follow your logic. Since he came back, I don't think he's let any potential free agent walk. Just because he didn't trade Span for a lesser package at the 2012 deadline doesn't mean he wasn't rebuilding or right to wait for the Nats to agree to his terms, for instance. I suppose he could have gone scorched earth like the Astros and tried to get the team to lose 110 games.
  3. I don't think anyone reads Heyman for stats. He's one of the better plugged in writers in baseball and when he says the Twins will make Hammer available it probably has a lot more authority when some internet blogger says the Twins will resign Scott Baker. :-) I think, so long as he stays healthy, Hammer will have real value since RH power is one of the hardest things to find right now and offense in general is down. And Ryan was able to get something for Liriano, Buetera, Morneau so I think he'll get something for Correia. I do hope he listens on offers for Dozier since, with Rosario, Polanco, Santana, Gordon we should be able to replace him and I think he could get us a really good piece back. But we'll see.
  4. Just a side note here but remember how the 2012 draft was supposed to be a down draft? In part that was b/c the 2011 draft was insanely top heavy. But the 2012 draft was downright awesome. Buxton, Correa, Zunino, Gausman, Almora, Fried, Wacha, Russell, Giolito, Sims, Stroman, Gallo, Berrios, Palweki. That was a much better draft in retrospect than before hand.
  5. The ideal draft would have been Buxton at #2, Joey Gallo at #32 and hope that Berrios fell 10 spots to #42. The Bard pick probably isn't going to pan out.
  6. I don't follow hockey but my understanding is that the wild are pretty mediocre despite making big splashes in FA. Not that the two sports are comparable. Before this season, the Twins could probably have traded Buxton or Sano for David Price, straight up. That would have made this team, say, 42-44. Would that have made sense? They have elite foundation pieces coming up - players considered on par with Joe Mauer when he was a prospect. Ryan has added complementary players in both free agency and trades to go with that core.
  7. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24608603/willingham-correia-expected-to-hit-market-barring-twins-turnaround Not really news but sorta news. Twins will be listening to offers on Hammer and Correia after the ASB. Hammer will be one of the better RH power options on the market but Correia will be harder to move.
  8. I think the Twins should get a lot closer to contention before trading off prospects. If/When the team is competitive with a nucleus of Buxton/Sano/Meyer then you can worry about trading a Kohl Stewart for an elite shortstop (if the team hasn't found an internal one).
  9. It can't hurt although I'm unsure how much it helps outside of two starters being off the market. I'd be surprised if the Rays get a better player than Russell though. I don't know much about that proposed trade but I think the Rays really messed up if they thought they could get more. (Now watch them trade him for Dylan Bundy).
  10. Actually, you can rebuild totally independently of those things. As Ryan has been doing.
  11. Cubs signed John Baker, doesn't mean they aren't rebuilding. I've mentioned it before but last year the Twins graduated 3 top 100 prospects to the majors. You can't do that every year but they are clearly rebuilding.
  12. I think it's hard to say that Ryan hasn't been in rebuild mode since he came back.
  13. He was sent back to EST for a while but he's been back for a while and still looking pretty bad. Heard the same thing about his fastball.
  14. Baltimore seems to line up pretty well for need with us. They lost Wieters and Jacobs, their current catcher, has a 53 OPS+. Schoop, their second baseman, has a .261 OBP and 64 OPS+. LF is a mess - former Twins castoffs Steve Pearce and Delmon Young are getting playing time out there. They have a strong pen but Perkins would still be a huge upgrade. Their starters are struggling yet they are still in 1st place. They are loaded with pitching prospects - Bundy is the obvious crown jewel but Hunter Harvey isn't far behind and LHP Eduardo Rodriguez is intriguing. According to the leaked Astros trade data, Duquette wasn't willing to move Bundy for Norris but didn't immediately rule out Gausman (although he obviously did later) for Norris. So maybe he's more willing to move top prospects while in "win-now" mode.
  15. 1-4, 8.91 era in A+ ball. He's only striking out 7.2 per nine (17% of batters he faces). A lot of players struggle adapting to pro ball but this is insane. I don't think I can remember a top college arm drafted this high struggle this much.
  16. Well, by 2016-2017 Stewart, Thorpe and Gordon should all be top prospects (if not in the majors). I do agree, however, that the Twins should move Perkins and Dozier if they get a great offer. If the Nats wanted to trade make a trade around Giolito for Dozier for example.
  17. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/athletics-to-acquire-jeff-samardzija-and-jason-hammel.html Big trade. I tend to think Samardzija is overrated but Hammel is a bit underrated but both are legit ML pitchers who should help this year. Hammel is a FA at the end of the year and Samardzija has one more year of club control. A's gave the Cubs arguably the best pure shortstop prospect in baseball in Addison Russell, former first rounder Billy McKinney who looks like a nice piece and MLer Dan Straily. With Russell, I think the Cubs are probably the best farm system in baseball right now, even with Beaz' struggles. Arguably, Bryant and Russell could be ranked ahead of Buxton/Sano respectively.
  18. I like that we have Walker. Jason Parks has said that he has first division type upside but the plate discipline is the huge question. If he figures it out, he's a great lottery ticket. If not, he probably doesn't get by AA. But he's a great 3rd round pick.
  19. I used to play that in the 90s under the second edition rules. Surprisingly, I was very single at the time. Never really liked any of the subsequent rule sets. There seemed to be some good ideas surrounded by extremely bad ones.
  20. Jim Callis has posted several times that the Astros could have gotten Buxton and McCullers but not Ruiz. And one could argue that Berrios and Walker were better gets than McCullers and Ruiz on their own.
  21. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=24070 Who is the best prospect? BP debates it.
  22. Not sure I'd start with the Dark Half, it was sort of a Bachman book. Good but not really his top shelf stuff. His best stuff is It, Salem's Lot, Shining, The Stand. Eyes of the Dragon is a really fun fantasy story with a great bad guy. And Cycle of the Werewolf is a really short easy read.
  23. Obviously I read Game of Thrones. Just finished Joyland by Stephen King which was really good and am reading something by David Wong called "This book is full of spiders". It's a classic.
  24. No, it happens to every team you just don't notice with Tulo misses large chunks of seasons because we don't follow the Rockies.
  25. I thought Bogaerts for Norris was even crazier.
