  1. Let's see. The Pohlads fired the GM. New GM fired half the coaching staff. Installed a new farm director and expanded the sabremetrics work in the FO.
  2. It's tough to turn down 5m. If he feels resentment, he can leave them in free agency or fight them down the line in arbitration. Hopefully he wins.
  3. Fudge. May will be out even longer with injury. Meyer replaces him on futures team. Also, if you need another reason to root for May, he is urging his twitter followers to vote for Morneau.
  4. Depends on why they aren't. Do you think some other GM can fix the team faster?
  5. Jon Heyman twittering that Aiken and the Astros will come to some deal around 5m (originally had agreed on 6.5). http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24610130/elbow-ligament-issue-for-no-1-pick-aiken-delays-signing-by-astros On the plus side, it saves the Astros nearly 3m on the draft pool. On the negative side, HS pitcher with elbow problems already. Ouch.
  6. Neither guy was ever a highly touted prospect. Schierholtz was taken in the 2nd round (63rd overall) and never cracked a top 100 list. He put up decent numbers in the PCL but managed about 2 WAR over three seasons jumping between AAA/ML at ages 26-28. He's the very definition of journeyman. Sickels write up: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2010/2/20/1318323/2010/2/20/1318323/not-a-rookie-nate-schierholtz Diamond was the same. BA wrote that "At his best, Diamond has shown fringe-to-average fastball velocity at 86-91 mph, and his overhand arm slot gives him a curveball that has been his best pitch throughout his minor league career." No one ever had Diamond as a highly touted prospect. BA trade write up suggests that he was going to be given a potential LOOGY role. Sickels even had a prospect of the day write up on him: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/6/26/3117444/prospect-of-the-day-scott-diamond-lhp-minnesota-twins-scouting-report
  7. They could be around .500 as early as next year, depending on health.
  8. I think what this might lead to is a discussion of how the Twins do in free agency. I think that's best put off for now. But Schierholtz (and Diamond) was not a high upside signing. He was a cheap placeholder until they could develop pieces to replace him. Every team does that. Willingham is also a place holder but it looks like he is one that the Twins can get something for, despite being over 30.
  9. ?? Rich Becker was part of those mid-90s teams and was traded off after the 97 season. Otis Nixon played on the 98 Twins.
  10. Fine, what did they get for that 21 home runs? Nothing. They didn't move him. He's been horrible this year and they keep throwing him out there. Schierholtz was never a high ceiling guy or somebody with an established record. He was a journey man who got lucky and had a good year. Sorta like Scott Diamond. By your own logic, the Cubs failed twice by not getting anything for him last year and by wasting nearly 300 PA on him this year. Heck, Kubel had a much better track record and was only a year away from 30 homer season. But it's ridiculous to bitch about Kubel as a way of saying they aren't rebuilding as this started.
  11. Mike, I think my general answer to this is that just b/c the team is bad now doesn't mean someone is to "blame." It's normal part of competitive sports and, frankly, it's a good thing that ownership isn't that kneejerk - other orgs have been crushed by constant changes by ownership. All I want to know is if the current regime can get things working again. Based on their track record and moves over the last few years, I think they will.
  12. Yeah, good point. Arguably our current top 10 is Buxton, Sano, Meyer, Stewart, Berrios, Gordon, Rosario, Polacno, May, Thorpe? Mlb.com's top 10 Twins for 2011 were: Hicks, Gibson, Sano, Arcia, Benson, Hendriks, Gutierrez, Salcedo, Dean and Wimmers. The first four are solid but there is a huge drop between that 5-10 and now.
  13. I think that's a good question but better to wait a few years. After Sano and Buxton are up, if Ryan is still dumpster diving instead of using all of payroll to help, I'd agree. Right now, I don't really care about payroll but in a few years, we'd better be back up there.
  14. Yep, I'm excited to see how he does in AA. Jason Parks at BP is having a chat and defended Berrios' delivery against KLaw: Jason Parks on the Top 50: We have put eyes on him this season and movement wasn't an issue with his fastball. This is why seeing players in person is so vital when forming and propagating scouting opinion. Here's a good (free) report on Berrios from Jeff Moore: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=105 http://www.baseballprospectus.com/chat/chat.php?chatId=1176&nocache=1404750495#new
  15. Again, this isn't really Radcliff/Ryan's fault. They stopped drafting in 07 but they had solid drafts. 07 they picked #28 and then, b/c of all the supp picks that year, they didn't draft again until the 90s. Revere was a good pick. The 06 draft was a bad draft but Parmelee is actually #16 in WAR among the 44 first round picks (and Benson was a solid prospect for a long while. Robertson got to the majors). Garza was a good pick in 05 (as were Slowey and Duensing in later rounds). 04 was rough - Plouffe and Perkins are ok and Swarzak is a decent 12th pitcher but injuries hurt everyone that was drafted by the Twins. 03 they missed on Moses but hit on Baker. 02 got Span, Neshek and Crain. Pretty solid. Those Ryan/Radcliff drafts weren't horrible - if you want to complain, you should be complaining about Deron Johnson and his changed drafting philosophy. But I've always felt, and still do, that baseball is usually cyclical. A team like the Twins can't always be at the top of the division. They had one losing season between 01-10. Drafting that late catches up with you, which is what we saw. They got some nice talent in a lot of those drafts but not enough, esp with the reported draft budgets Pohlad had put in place.
  16. Actually, seems like a light return. Taylor is putting up nice numbers in the PCL but that's an offensive dream league. Most people still think he's a UI, not a starter. Hopefully, the Twins can get some kind of bidding war going for Hammer, who might be the best RH power bat available and he has always had really good OBP. Gohara seems to have some conditioning issues which is usually a big red flag to the Twins. I'd be pretty surprised if they traded Hammer for an out of shape 17 year old kid. It's been a while since a legit slugger was traded at the deadline. Beltran and Pence in 2011 but Hammer's not going to get quite that kind of return by himself (although the Mets did a nice job of getting a bidding war going to get Wheeler). Maybe Victorino type deal? One backend top 100 guy and a couple other promising prospects thrown in.
  17. BP put out their top 50 midseason as well but it's behind a pay wall so I don't know who/if any Twins were ranked (well, I know some were ranked). http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=24076#commentMessage According to the comments, 4 Cubs are in the top 20.
  18. Wow, who would have thought that Meyer would be our #3 pitcher and still ranked #32 overall? Personally, I think the Berrios rating is too high (for reasons in the numerous Berrios threads) but it's a bold ranking and I'm sure the people at BA know a lot more about it than I do. Really exciting to see.
  19. Suzuki is a solid pick. 3rd among catchers in WAR, 1st in avg, 4th in OPS. 3 catchers are on the team - I assume Norris and Perez are the other two but I admit to being too lazy to look it up.
  20. Yeah, I mean, I don't really care about now or 20 days from now but, yeah. I hope they listen on Dozier and Perkins too. Looks like we're starting to hear about minor league promotions - Berrios to AA already and maybe Meyer takes Nolasco's place in the rotation.
  21. Who has Ryan given multi-year deals to? Hammer and Correia will probably be traded in the next month. Doumit was traded. Pelfrey. Hughes. Nolasco. Perkins. Did I miss someone? Yeah, I didn't like the Kubel signing but it was defensible and he and Bartlett combined for 180 PA so I'm not going to freak out over it. Heck, the Cubs have giving 100 more PA to Nate Schierholtz.
  22. Good for him
  23. Yeah, that doesn't sound good (and I think Kepler replaced him). Taken out after grounding out to 3rd
  24. I don't think the Twins had Ruiz rated that highly. MLB.com had him rated something like #86 going into the draft. Obviously that was a snapshot at the time and things changed all the time but he didn't seem a guy the Twins were ever on. I do remember the Twins were linked to a variety of pitchers (although never heard Bard until draft day so ...)
