  1. I'm not sure that's a fair assessment of the 2012 draft. We got the best prospect in baseball in that draft and a pretty darn good starting pitching prospect with our second pick. In the third round they grabbed a lottery ticket in Walker. Yeah, they did take several relief arms - but most teams do draft more pitchers than they will use. I suspect in a few years no one will consider that the Twins focused on relief arms in that draft.
  2. Yeah, I like Curtiss a lot more than the Clay pick.
  3. John Curtiss. Callis thinks he's a starter but he was a reliever coming back from TJ last year. Nice sleeper in his words.
  4. They have grabbed some interesting international bats the last few years, however. My guess is that picks in rounds 2-4 won't have a huge impact on longterm minor leaguer rosters.
  5. I asked that question in a KLaw chat a couple days ago before we even drafted him (b/c I was really hoping he'd be there!). Klaw said something like his pitches might not be 80 if he has to throw 100 pitches/game and concern about mechanics.
  6. This draft was dedicated to mike wants wins.
  7. I'd offer it but I'm not sure he'd take it.
  8. The Clay pick surprises me. In some ways it seems it could be to save money but he's a sophomore so he has a lot of leverage if he wants to go back to school. I'm ok with the Cederoth pick even with Burdi.
  9. Looks like a Deron Johnson draft so far. Flame throwers.
  10. I believe Nick Blackburn holds the team record for scoreless innings - something like 44 innings. I found an article on it: "Nick Blackburn pitched seven shutout innings to lead the Rochester Red Wings to a 4-1 win over the visiting Ottawa Lynx Monday afternoon. With the victory, Rochester (68-56) moved to within 1 1/2 games of first-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the International League's North Division. Blackburn (7-1) yielded just five hits -- none of which went for extra bases -- and did not allow a runner past second base. The 25-year-old right-hander struck out three and did not issue a walk en route to snapping his streak of four consecutive no-decisions. The shutout effort was Blackburn's first since having his 44-inning scoreless streak snapped against Buffalo on July 3. Blackburn, who started the season as a member of the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats, has compiled a stellar 2.14 ERA over 92 1/3 innings pitched with the Red Wings." Now, I do think May is a better prospect than Blackburn was right now, although Blackburn did get ranked the #56 prospect in baseball after that season so maybe he wasn't. But stat lines alone aren't enough to say if someone is dominating. I do like May (a lot). I think he should be in the rotation right now (replacing Deduno if not Correia). But I'm not overly concerned about letting Correia get another few starts to get back on track. We're going to need innings from our starters and Correia isn't this bad.
  11. Appel has been just horrible this year (and with Gray and Bryant killing it, Astros blogs are not overly happy about it). In his last start, the 22 year old gave up 10 runs and 10 hits in 1.1 innings against A+ hitters. In 5 starts, his era is over 11.00. And now he has tendinitis in his thumb which, for now, made him miss a start. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/05/astros-prospect-mark-appel-dealing-with-tendinitis-in-his-thumb/
  12. I think fans way overrate prospects in general. Some are worthy of praise - Meyer, Sano, Buxton. But guys like May, Pinto, Darnell, Johnson are not even in most lists of the Twins best 10 prospects and Pinto and Johnson are career journeymen. I like them both (b/c I love all prospects) and hope that Pinto gets up here. But I do think that most fans expectations for any of these guys is out of line with the reality of what will happen - come up, get knocked around, struggle, get sent back down, repeat a few times. If you recall, a few years ago, Dozier was this really intriguing sleeper that a lot of us liked. Then he sucked and we couldn't get rid of him fast enough. Same with Perkins and Plouffe and Parmelee. If you look at our draft threads you see fans comparing prospects to HOFers and vomitting at the thought of having to get another Brad Radke. Fans love unseen prospects like they love the back up QB.
  13. I don't think he's trying to disparage May, for instance. I think he's trying to keep our expectations honest. May has had some really good outings but has had some issues with walks and has been able to get minor league hitters to chase a bit. When he gets up here, he's probably going to get knocked around and sent back down before he figures it out long term. But I think a lot of people see his sub 3.00 era and more strike outs than innings pitched and think he's a front of the rotation starter. I guess I just don't read his comment the same way as you did.
  14. I guess I think things are being said and planned behind the scenes so I don't particularly care about media comments. I suspect that the FO hopes that Correia can get back on track enough to be a possible trade chip and that they are probably willing to let him make 3-4 more starts to get there.
  15. And which pitchers have met that description?
  16. What did you want Gardy to say? "I want Meyer up here but the FO isn't ready for that."? He's towing the company line for now. Correia has a little more rope than Pelfrey but probably not a lot more (interestingly, if you trust fip, Correia has been extremely unlucky this year).
  17. I'm not sure if this should be a different thread but, what did people think about other teams drafts? I liked Houston taking Aiken and Fischer although I'm not a big fan of Reed. I have no idea what the Cubs are doing. It looked like they took two underslot deals right away. Sadly, the White Sox had a real nice draft - Rodon is a top 30 prospect already and Adams might be their second beset prospect. Cleveland was really into bloodlines - even took Killebrew's grandson. They had a nice first day.
  18. I think Mike has it right. If the Twins were competing for a playoff spot, sign Drew. But if they are in rebuild, keep the pick. Burdi could turn into a healthy Joel Zumaya.
  19. Graves would be a nice Twins pick. I think Lemond is a reliever and they won't draft him after nabbing Burdi. Although they could grab him and let him continue on his reliever to starter run .... mike wants wins will love that.
  20. Started last night and took the loss. 6 ip, 3er, 6h, 2bb and 9k. One extra base hit was a double. A run scored on his wild pitch. For the season he is 5-4, 2.80 era, 61ip, 63k, 24bb. Solid numbers. He is what he is - potentially a #3 or inning eating back of the rotation arm. He's gonna give up some walks at the ML level and struggle at first but it's probably about time for him to get up here.
  21. I don't know a lot about who is left but Chris Oliver could be interesting - although he might end up in the pen. I'm a big fan of Jackson Reetz, the catching prospect. Would jump on him if we could. Carson Sands is an intriguing lefty from North Florida Christian and his teammate OFer Matthew Railey would both look good too.
  22. I agree. I think there are a number of baseball lifers whose combined work with MLB should be recognized. Buck O'Niel, Jim Kaat, Don Zimmer etc.
