  1. I don't see how Berrios will be blocked. Santana is the only person locked into our rotation. The other four spots can and will be changed. I suspect Berrios will be up on May 1.
  2. So many options - try and trade Dozier again, move Sano to first and slide Polanco over, trade one of Polanco/Gordon ...
  3. I haven't seen any stats for the area code games but Greene was the MVP, so he did ok. But scouts have seen him at other summer events, not just that one. And, again, I'm not sure it's fair to say he's facing regular old high school kids. He was playing at the Compton urban academy for a while (ala Aaron Hicks) and I would assume that he's playing in an advanced HS pitching league. I mean, I played regular high school football but I sure wasn't playing against Cretin Derham Hall. I assume most top HS players - in most sports - play at that level of competition. Just googled his last game and the opposing pitcher - 16 years old - is already committed to Cal-Northridge, a baseball powerhouse.
  4. If Escobar keeps hitting, Sano to first might happen a bit sooner. But the OF defense looks really good. It's early and it's only one defensive stat - and it might not be the best one - but fangraphs DRS has the Twins 5th in all baseball.
  5. Last year. http://www.baseballamerica.com/area-code-baseball/greene-leads/#mZpXTv7qomElkd4w.97
  6. I can't remember if it's in this thread or a ba chat but the idea that Greene is only throwing to little catholic boys is stupid. He's pitching against opponents that are going to major baseball colleges. (Buxton and Trout both faced inferior HS competition as well.) Jonathan Mayo noted that Greene has dominated in the summer showcase circuits, ""I've been going to the Area Code Games forever and I like to tell people the best pitcher I've seen there has been Josh Beckett," the NL scouting director said. "I think Greene went past him."" There are valid reasons to not draft Greene but the caliber of his opponents is not one of them.
  7. Every single player you listed was drafted based on projection. None were drafted b/c of their HS stats. Those are completely meaningless. The issue is if the people doing the projecting think Greene is/will be better than the other guys they are looking at. If he is, they'll probably draft him.
  8. Preller is SD's GM, not Greene's adviser.
  9. Bonus demands are going to complicate this a bit, too. If Preller is going to be the dick that we all know he can be, the Twins won't get any savings out of the first pick and might have to go overslot for Greene. If a college player comes at a discount, they might take that.
  10. I agree with 1 and 2 but #3 is probably unlikely. Most players were solid two way players in high school, especially pitchers who are usually a teams best athletes. Obviously, Greene's a bit ahead of all of them but not that far ahead. If you don't play a position for a few years, it's really hard to catch up. Stetson Allie was a first round talent as a pitcher but some teams thought he'd be better with his bat. He pitched for a few years before giving that up to go back to hitting. He's 26 and still in AA. If the Twins draft Greene as a pitcher and in a few years they have to try again as a shortstop, he probably won't make it.
  11. I agree that some of this is just in his head. If he can have a 3 hit day, maybe the pressure comes off and he's good to go. Hopefully the White Sox can help him tonight.
  12. Late to this thread. I think Buxton will be somewhat mediocre in April but figure it out fairly soon and have a solid season with the bat - an OPS around 100+ and all world defense. He's a stud. We'll be fine.
  13. Has anyone watched Stewart pitch in an actual game? Does he get hitters into strike out counts and then have them just roll over on his sinker? Does he get swing and misses earlier in the count?
  14. Anyone holding pharmaceuticals? I put 5500 into my IRA but not sure what I'm going to do with it, mostly wait and see now but I don't have much in health care/pharma so starting to look around a bit in that area.
  15. The 25 man roster will change and we'll get Park or Vargas up here to eventually take some at bats away from Mauer but I'm not sure this is something to worry about in April. Mauer isn't what he was but he still gets on base and he has hit lefties before. And if he has Buxton in front of him (hopefully on first base) maybe a few of those ground outs to the second baseman sneak through.
  16. I didn't want to sign a guy like Sipp on a 3/18m deal (he sucked last year, by the way). Stop gaps are fine for a bullpen. I don't think you want to spend a lot on relief arms when they are so risky.
  17. I don't have an answer to this. I thought we'd see a back end of the bullpen of Burdi, Perkins, Jepsen, May Chargois and Meyer by last August. (I knew all wouldn't make it but I figured some would). I was really excited about that. Clearly that didn't happen. But that's why I didn't want us to sign a Tony Sipp type. I still don't. And I agree that Chargois should have been on the opening day roster. I hope he forces their hand. But I'm not going to overly worry about the stop gaps while waiting for those younger arms to get here.
  18. Mike, I think you're arguments lose a little bit of their merit when you're complaining about back up catchers and clearly stop gap bullpen arms. Sure, Giminez isn't much. Would we rather have Garver sitting on the bench or playing in AAA? The Twins have some very exciting and young bullpen arms not yet on the 40 man roster (Jay, Burdi) and a few that are (Chargois). None are ready April 1st. The Twins are starting 6 former top 100 prospects that are 27 and younger in their lineup on opening day. Yes, the new FO didn't bring those guys in but they didn't block them either. That should be exciting. They changed the rotation more than it looks like at first blush. They removed 73 starts from last years starters and added a rookie to the rotation to go with 4 vets under team control. I don't think the complaints about 'being older' are valid. It's a young team so adding a stop gap vet isn't a big deal.
  19. For some reason, I think Rosario is either going to be amazing or horrible. No in between this year. I'm hoping for a huge .300+ avg with pop great defense and solid baserunning but he could also do .260/.290/.450. I just think it'll be one of the two. So let's hope for something like .303/.333/.470

  21. I think it was the shoulder injury at the end of the 2013 season. His mechanics were never the same. Big pitchers have lots of moving parts so you muck up one and it all just falls apart. That's not to say it couldn't be both. The way I see it, since 2012, the Twins have only had about 6 pitchers with the stuff to be legit #1/2 type pitchers - Meyer, Stewart, Jay and maybe Berrios, Thorpe and Romero. Jay and Meyer are pen arms now. Stewart's mechanics are inconsistent. Berrios dominated the minors and Romero and Thorpe are bouncing back from injuries.
  22. The Meyer thing is done. He lost his control. It happens. He's, what? 27? 10 walks in 10 innings? I'd rather have Hector.
  23. Let's keep in mind that this is NOT the same starting staff as last year. They've removed 73 starts from last years' group. I'm not sure how this group will do but it's not the same starters.
  24. People wanted Santiago cut all offseason because May was a better option. He's gone. So we can get rid of people (and I think Santana is a pretty good place to start) but I think fans tend to forget about how important depth is - esp starting pitching depth. And this place blew up when the Twins did make some moves - like removing Park from the 40 man or letting Jake Reed get taken in the rule v or the all-time Joe Benson thread.
