  1. He'll start either in AA for us or in another teams bullpen. How he does from there is up to him. I hope he can put it all together.
  2. Didn't the Padres carry four catchers for a while last season? I'm positive they did.
  3. Killebrew took three ballots. That's my guess for Thome.
  4. I think the Twins did a good job of building up Santana in 02 and 03 before making him a fulltime starter in 04. He had only pitched 130 innings combined in 00 and 01 so he threw back to back 160ip seasons before 04. What I always forget is that he didn't come in second that year to Colon. Rivera was second.
  5. I think Stewart is a lock to be drafted by some team. He's still young, throws mid 90s and it's easier to hide a pitcher in the pen all year. Why wouldn't a rebuilding team like the Padres or Phillies try that and at least see what he's got in ST? Plus those teams probably still have detailed write ups from his draft year so they'll be intrigued to see if they can 'fix' him. Interesting, it looks like other top 15 picks from the 2013 draft that weren't protected including Mark Appel (DFA'd), Phil Bickford, Trey Ball and DJ Peterson. I'm not sure what happened with Ball. I thought he'd be ok.
  6. Yep, in law school trademarks class we learned about how Deere trademarked its colors. Pretty interesting case reading, as those things go.
  7. I do think it's fair to argue that the Twins FO underestimated its chances when it moved Kintzler, for example. I like Tyler Watson but it's not like he's an elite prospect. He's probably not in our top 20. And for that, the FO saved a few bucks for ownership and ran up the white flag. I think it's fair to criticize them for that.
  8. I know it's a safe boring stock but we bought John Deere a couple years ago and it's been a really good stock - strongly out performing the S&P and giving back some nice dividends as well. It won't blow up in a good way like some tech stocks but it's got a pretty strong moat.
  9. I think this offseason will tell us a lot about the new FO but I don't think we can give them a lot of credit for what they've done so far. Some credit, sure.
  10. As a group, I like 21-25 much better. Miranda is the only one I'd keep and I'd bring Jay, Stewart, Rortvedt and Granite down into this ranking. Miranda I'm really high on and would probably have him even higher. He's going to turn into a slugging third baseman. The rest I'm quite meh on, frankly. I like Curtiss, I think he'll end up a big part of the pen next year but he's the only one I think will do anything for the ML club. Jorge is a AAAA type in my view and I'm not sure the other two are even that good. Obviously, I hope they prove me wrong.
  11. It's a cop out but let's see how the offseason shakes out. I'm not opposed to the Twins letting him DH in April and May to confirm what they have if Sano can stay at third. I like Vargas' power and think a smart manager might use him a bit like Leyland did with Monroe and bury him low in the line up to surprise opposing pitchers instead of putting him in the 5 spot. But if the Twins sign a better bat, great.
  12. Yeah, I think people are focusing too much on Rortvedt's batting line and not considering the improvements made after that abysmal start and that he was in full season ball already.
  13. Well, nice for him but I still wish we had let him go. Oh well. Hopefully he manages a world series winning team next year!
  14. Per BA: the top 4 were also in the top 100. 1. Matt Garza, rhp 2. Glen Perkins, lhp 3. Kevin Slowey, rhp 4. Chris Parmelee, of 5. Anthony Swarzak, rhp 6. Pat Neshek, rhp 7. Alexi Casilla, ss/2b 8. Joe Benson, of 9. Paul Kelly, ss 10. J.D. Durbin, rhp Kind of hard to guess where these five guys would fit since we know what happened.
  15. Our peak years - say 2014 and 2015 - are untouchable overall but I would argue that our system depth now, after two really strong drafts is just as good as it ever was. The current top 10 won't be anywhere near those peak top 10s in depth or upside. 11-30, however, could be a wash or even go to the current system. We'll see.
  16. That's a pretty strong group of 5 and I'd probably push four of them into the top 20, myself. We'll see who else is ranked. Jay and Granite are both so close to the majors, I think they should be higher. Granite seems like a decent 4th OF/speed bench guy but b/c he's left handed, he's not a perfect fit for this squad. I'd like to include him in something this offseason when we try and improve our pitching. Jay, if healthy, could really help the pen but, as you said, we've been saying that for years about several minor league arms. We'll see. Stewart is a lighting rod. We'll see how the season goes for him. I still like him. Rortvedt is a guy I'd have five spots higher but that's not really important. He - along with Miranda and Baddoo - were an amazing group of second round picks in 2016. Really enjoy watching those three develop for us.
  17. The issue of selling at the deadline rides on one question - were the Twins contenders for the playoffs this year? The answer was yes. The new, smart FO didn't know that. The trades themselves look ok enough but it's not like we received anything overly great back. So we punted on a winnable season and that was only salvaged by the players who won despite the lack of resources from the FO. I don't know much about social media but it seems quite small to attack the tweeter in question as much as you did. Perhaps there is more to it than what you published on TD but his tweet wasn't mind bending.
  18. I think we'll have to use most of our money on pitching. If Sano can't go at third everyday, we'll use Escobar behind him. Maybe we could find another RH 4th OFer over Granite through a minor trade.
  19. I certainly think both Mussina and Morris could be in the HOF (I'm a big hall guy). Glavine in before Moose isn't a huge problem when you consider all the extra innings he threw. For his career, Moose threw about 3500 innings w/123 ERA+ over 18 seasons. From 91-06, Glavine threw 3500 innings w/127 ERA+. He then threw another 900 or so innings (not counting the 200+ postseason innings). Rate stats are good but they have limits. One thing that is very hard for pitchers to do is be top 10 in both ERA+ and IP in the same year. You throw that many innings, your rate stats drop. Glavine managed that 9 times. Moose 7x. Pedro 5x. Schilling 6x. Smoltz 4x. Morris 3x.
  20. Jax should be off the list completely. I'd put several relief arms ahead of Rodriquez. I like Bechtold a lot b/c it looks like he can take a walk. Mid 20s, for now, seems about right but I could really see him jumping up the lists next year. I've mentioned this before but I have a friend who is an international scout for the Royals and he really liked Whitefield. He even posted some Whitefield video on his facebook account after he signed with the Twins. He's a fan. He says he's raw but already further along than he thought he'd be. He thinks he'll make the majors. Marte is exciting. Very far away, of course, but nice ceiling. Glad he's in our system.
  21. I'm not going to argue every point. Some are very valid. But some also don't reflect the time he pitched. By today's standards, he wasn't a strike out pitcher but you're underestimating him. He led the league in strikeouts once and was top ten 8 times. He has more seasons than Johan Santana in the top ten for both strike outs in a season and k/9 in a season. Obviously, Santana was a relief pitcher for a while and Santana was the premier strike out pitcher for a while there but Morris wasn't just trudging along. When he pitched a full season, he was a strike out pitcher. Only 33 pitchers have struck out more hitters than Morris and he was 21st all time when he retired.
