  1. weird or not, it's a thing. Why fight it? And Duran was given the 9th in the previous four save situations. Virtually perfect. Why change?
  2. MLB guidance to scorers is not to award errors on any play requiring more than "normal effort." You could get an error on a throw after a diving stop, for example, if it resulted in extra bases. But players no longer are charged errors on "hard" plays. "Trying and failing at a hard play" is no longer penalized. That's not me saying that, that's MLB.
  3. I believe that's Matthews. Unless I completely made that up. Edit: I completely made that up. Matthews has gone as many as 7 IP this season, twice in fact, in the minors. Edit 2: Festa went 6 IP twice this season for St Paul. However, MiLB workloads are insanely light.
  4. I'll quibble with 51/49, but whatever. As for part 2, exactly. Then why the need to swap Duran and Jax? Why change roles for anything other than his own ego?
  5. Can you share with us when that was? Duran has 5 appearances against KC this season. He earned a save in all three appearances against KC May 27, 28, and 30. No earned runs allowed. Pitched the 9th in all three games. He gave up an earned run on August 14, pitching the 7th inning, in a 4-1 loss. And finally last night. This stuff can be looked up. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=duranjh01&t=p&year=2024
  6. They threw you in the water??!?!??!?
  7. E Julien (L) 2B J Miranda (R) 1B T Larnach (L) LF M Wallner (L) RF R Lewis (R) 3B W Castro (S) CF R Jeffers (R) DH B Lee (S) SS C Vázquez (R) C
  8. No, the roster provided a 2 run lead with a starter who had 83 pitches, given up 1 hit, and had retired 15 consecutive. He's cruising. Looked as good in the 7th as the 1st. No loss of velo or location. No long, stressful innings. And...We agree the bullpen isn't overflowing with good options. So maybe try not to use your 2 best options when there's a very good possibility you don't have to? If, for some unfathomable reason, that situation required removal, the roster gave him perhaps the league's best setup guy and a closer who was 20 for 22, including near perfect the last 4 tries...all 9th inning saves. But none of that mattered to the manager. A little honest evaluation would be refreshing.
  9. That same thought occurred to me, and would be a possible source of the problems second time through the order as well.
  10. How is that different from "we won a postseason game for the first time in forever...but we're chopping payroll"?
  11. That could have been done without pinch hitting. And I don't have the numbers in front of me but isn't Castro something like 2 for his last 1 million batting RHed?
  12. I don't think it's odd at all. The Twins focus on the theoretical, not the practical. When you just look at a spreadsheet, it shouldn't matter when someone pitches. Many here believe the same thing. 5th, 7th, 9th, it's the same guy. What difference does it make? It's related to the idea that times through an order matter more than results. It's related to the idea that anybody can play anywhere. Related to the idea any kind of lineup consistency is needless. There's no benefit to players knowing where they'll hit every day. It's related to their stated belief that pitchers and catchers should focus on the hitter, with minimal attention paid to runners. No matter the situation. Theory over practice. Whether that's good or bad, well I have my opinion. Others probably disagree. But I don't think it can be denied they strongly believe in theory and act on it.
  13. Let's ignore removing Ober for reasons unknown. It's the heart of the matter, but we're gonna get "Duran/Jax best two relievers blah blah blah" till the cows come home as an excuse. Let's focus on those two relievers. Duran's previous 4 outings: 4 IP, 1 hit, 0 walks, 0 runs, 4 K's. 4 saves. As a CLOSER. In the 9th. I don't know why he seemingly often can't pitch as effectively outside the 9th. But for whatever reason, he doesn't. Now you can analytics that, and pretend role doesn't matter. Or, you can manage, and put him where he belongs. In for a save. You can look at Griffin Jax, EXCELLING at his setup role. Maybe the best in the game. And you could be happy with that. Thrilled even. Or, you could feel the need to prove how smart you are. Flip flop em. Give Jhoan the 8th! Bottom of the order, Yada yada Yada. Yep.
  14. First rule of holes: when you find yourself in one, stop digging
  15. Some have tied themselves to the position that Rocco is great. And they ain't coming off that position come hell or high water.
  16. So you demonstrate by repeating it?
  17. Perhaps not objective here, Mike?
  18. Not Larnach. Helman. But good question.
  19. Any thoughts on the manager?
  20. How do we just concede that run??
  21. I don't understand why Duran gets so reluctant to throw fastballs.
