  1. Battey was always one of my favorite Twins! He just had a calm, consistent demeanor that was reflected in his play.
  2. This is a wonderful, nostalgic series! I have just one humble suggestion to improve it: Could you put the date of the story in the top lines? Sometimes it takes me half of the paragraph to figure out the point in the season (or off-season) to which the article pertains.
  3. Based on TD, most of the fan base currently blames the owners. That might have something to do with the players not accepting outside mediation. They have the advantage at present in the court of public opinion, Why submit to another "court" where they might not fare so well?
  4. I think it's a safe guess that most people who are not invested in baseball probably don't even know that there is a stoppage and wouldn't start paying any attention at all until at least April (and more likely August).
  5. What did I ever do without TD? It's the first site that I open in the mornings after reading email. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into the production!
  6. Yes. I pretty much gave up on him two days after the draft. Strikeouts, walks, and occasional homeruns. Yawn! Don't we already have about 10 of him in the system?
  7. Does anyone know if Tovar is still alive? I'd like to see him able to receive the much-deserved award.
  8. Especially if you can find a Whitey Ford in the group. (Or maybe a new GM...)
  9. Thanks, Seth. I came to Twins Daily as the successor to Seth Speaks and your posts about prospects are my favorite part of the site. There is always something about which to be optimistic even in the darkest of times for the big club!
  10. I think it's safe to take Portland off the list. There is no stadium and the public support for subsidizing one is low. In most places, you can add 1/2 percent to the sales tax and most people won't notice. The absence of a state sales tax in Oregon makes that impossible, and makes it very difficult to raise funds for such projects. The collection costs (and PR costs) of introducing a local sales tax are prohibitive and the income tax and property tax are already at high levels as the main source of, respectively, state and local funding. The only way to raise funding at the local level is through a ballot measure and I'm quite confident that a stadium measure would go down in flames. It might even have trouble getting on the ballot. And a team could not move in until a stadium was actually built because there is literally no place to play baseball that seats more than 1.500 fans. The Portland Beavers AAA franchise---affiliated with the Twins when I first moved herein 1988---played in Civic Stadium, which seated about 20,000, but which has since been converted to football (both kinds) only. There has been no affiliated baseball in Portland for about 30 years and, although there are a few prominent and noisy zealots, the interest level is very low.
  11. I think that, rather than a tank-and-rebuild philosophy, the Twins aspire to emulating St. Louis: a perennial contender and occasional pennant winner. This requires not a break-down followed by rebuild, but a steady flow of young talent overlapping with a selective investment in veteran talent. If this is the case, they really should have signed Berrios to an extension, but everything else fits. Of course, Maeda's injury is a monkey-wrench in the works for next year, but I think the front office wants the young generation (Kirilloff, Larnach, Duran, Balazovic, Martin, Lewis, etc.) to take over soon and does not want to block them with expensive, aging players on the decline.
  12. I pay the most attention to Twins games during Arraez's at-bats because they are enjoyable and the ball is usually in play so there is action. He is about the only Twin who keeps the defense honest by spraying the ball all over the field. With so many of his teammates, the outcomes are predictably boring to watch: strikeout, walk, flyball, grounder into the shift, homerun. If he's gone, will I watch at all?
  13. Lovely, thanks! I guess handed-ness is not genetic if identical twins throw with opposite hands.
  14. Question for those who might know: Will the minor leagues play? If so, what determines which players are locked out and which would play, 40-man roster status? I'm assuming that the greedy rich guys on both sides will keep the major leagues off the field for at least a few months.
  15. With all due respect, what does expertise does FanGraphs (or anyone else) have in predicting durability? As has been said hundreds of times in these virtual pages, if he's healthy, he's a brilliant defender and potentially a dominating hitter ... if he's healthy. If his health retains its recent form, you can divide the numbers in half.
  16. I also enjoy these lists and think the separation of pitchers from hitters is useful to avoid meaningless comparisons. If you separated starters from relievers, you might think about only doing 15 of each to keep 30 total pitchers. Of course, it's often hard to tell with prospects which ones will end up in the rotation vs. the bullpen.
  17. What I like about this plan is that bringing in 2-3 really top pitchers makes that team a real champion. And between the really good prospects nearly ready in the system and the increased attractiveness that such a lineup would present to FA pitchers, it might be a feasible route.
  18. I assume that you're not including the Rule 5 draft. Otherwise Santana would have to be up there.
  19. It seems like Dobnak might also fit this mold. But he's also a cautionary tale: Remember that he was truly awful out of the bullpen but has pitched quite well at times as a starter. What may work for some guys might not for others.
  20. Could one compare Tony to Willie Mays? They had the same kind of flair on and off the field and I think that if Tony had stayed healthy their overall performance would have been similar. (But of course Mays started his career in New York with a World Series championship, so had legendary status from the very beginning.) I think I remember that Tony's real name was Pedro and that Tony was his brother, whose passport he used to get to the U.S. Is that correct or did my memory make this up?
  21. What a doomsday scenario for the young man if he loses part of a 3RD straight season due to work stoppage. What next?
  22. Two great players from my youth. And both proved to be great gentlemen after their playing careers ended.
  23. Unlucky or "brittle"? I'd love to hear from one of our medical experts (Lucas? Heezy?) on the question of whether some people are actually more brittle or injury-prone than others. In my family, my wife has had many more broken bones and muscle strains than I have, and I doubt that she has had more falls and similar events. (Her favorite line is "Most people go to the gym to get strong; I go to the gym to get hurt!") It certainly seems like every time Buxton has any kind of potential injury event he is out for months, whereas for some other players it is a minor knock and they can stay in the lineup or be "day to day." Professional advice would be appreciated!
