  1. In every sport, a winning strategy works because it beats yesterday's opposing strategy. The shift works more often than not against a player who continues to follow his past spray chart. The comment about Rod Carew is spot-on. Every minor leaguer should be drilled on learning the bat control to put the ball in the defensive gaps. It might take 5 years, but as more players learn to do this and more teams look for players who can do this, the shift will wane in success and popularity.
  2. Seems like an ideal candidate for a contract with performance clauses. Half guaranteed and the rest kicking in at 80 games and 120 games played.
  3. Choke + Clutch = Ruined engine and transmission.
  4. Speak for yourself. I still rely on it as an important indicator.
  5. Garver to the Yankees to join his hitting and catching coaches? Depends on what we get back, of course.
  6. Off topic, but thanks for asking. The last week has looked like the apocalypse here. The air quality index was 516 yesterday, which is beyond the top of the "hazardous" region. They don't have a name for it, just "beyond scale." That said, we are grateful that the high east winds that were blowing the fires (and the smoke) from the forests into Portland have subsided, and it looks like the main metro area is not going to be threatened by fire. It seems a bit like rooting for the Yankees to be hoping for rain in Portland, but that's what we need to clean out the air. Maybe tonight or tomorrow, and likely at the end of the week. There is hope!
  7. You are a treasure for TD! Thank you so much for your informed analyses. We all tend to speculate regarding things about which we know little, so advice from a true expect is priceless!
  8. Not enough AB to really know, but his strikeout rate (5/19) was not prohibitive here. That was my biggest worry about him and it remains to be seen if he can continue to make contact once the pitchers start to figure him out a little next year.
  9. Rich Hill seems to turn into Poor Valley in the 4th or 5th inning. Maybe an opener or a long reliever?
  10. The strong record of the AC Central must be reflected by a poor record of the NL Central, since those are the only outside teams that our division is playing. (And of course, except against the Twins, KC and Detroit are poor, so the wins within the division are not spread out evenly.)
  11. Seeing the two of them together looks like some kind of sci-fi movie with aliens! That or a cave sheltering furry animals.
  12. Baseball is a hard game. You have to be 100% focused to succeed. Except for Cruz and Maeda, this team is not. Hence the mistakes, inconsistency, and "total system failure." Maybe they will come back focused in 2021, if there's a season.
  13. There are multiple distractions right now, and the Twins seem totally distracted. I get the feeling that no one other than Cruz is really focused in on baseball. And I guess I'm not really focused on baseball either (but it's not my job). I'm ready to pack it in and get ready for 2021.
  14. Umm, typo? Is the capital M on "may" a suggestion that Trevor will be on the move?
  15. I hate to admit it, but Buxton is currently starring at his most effective position: IL. Do we really want to sign him for more years of injuries? For me, I'd offer a contract that assumes that he plays 75 games, then incentives for more. Base salary = half what he's worth; it doubles if he plays the full season.
  16. I think I like St. Paul better than any of these options. (And he could dash off some epistles between at-bats!)
  17. Given the possibility/probability of labor strife after 2021, I wonder if anyone will want to sign a contract that extends beyond next year.
  18. What you say is exactly the reason why now would be the time to build a team around speed. Everyone else is into homeruns, so they are not worrying about pitchers and catchers who can control the running game. A team that is built for speed should do well in that environment. It's kind of like having a good running game when everyone else is focusing on defending the pass.
  19. I get your point. But unlike any other year, we don't have any minor league statistics to tell us whether the players we want to see are in good form or slumping. The team, on the other hand, knows because they are watching them every day. We just have to trust their judgment (or not) this year.
  20. It was always awkward having the best/only lefty be the closer. It might be better to use him in situations against tough left-handed hitters and someone else in the generic closer role.
  21. Anybody else wondering that our two "fielding substitutions" at 2B and (to some extent) 1B combined to screw up the DP in the 9th? I'd bet that Arraez makes that throw and we win in 9. He may not have a lot of range, but he doesn't make a lot of mistakes.
  22. That means that every out today is worth 3.47 normal outs. One double play wipes out more than 2 innings of a normal season!
  23. VERY small sample size. About a week ago we were lamenting his BA in the low .100s. I'd like the think that he's "turned the corner," but let's see where he is in a month.
  24. True, but not all of us have the time and energy to explore them. It's nice to have a brief note like this on the Twins' site that we do read, with links to more details if we want them. I'm grateful for these little pieces. I'll know now to watch for information about Tatis and have a context when he is mentioned on broadcasts.
