  1. It would be very interesting to know more about the human side of this. What went on with the benching and now the demotion? What has his attitude been like in the clubhouse through the slump? How did he react to the news? Based on observables, he totally deserves to ride buses for a while!
  2. It kind of makes you wonder what kind of long-lasting impact the current manager is having on the players. Are they assimilating the same kind of values? It sure seems like the current team makes a lot more fundamental (and mental) errors than Kelly's teams or even Gardenhire's teams did.
  3. Well, since you asked ... BPA for me means Bonneville Power Administration. But then I live in Portland.
  4. Before the season we all heard, and even said, that 2018 was the beginning of the Twins' future. Sadly, this may be correct. I'm afraid that the future is going to look a lot like 2018 in too many ways: disappointing Buxton, uninterested and underachieving Sano, etc. Not only have the last two months soured me on the 2018 season, they have gutted my optimism about the coming five years and even made me much less interested in following prospects, who figure to disappoint us once they come up regardless of their minor-league credentials.
  5. This is an interesting point. It seems like there are some groups of players/managers (i.e., teams) that always find a way to win the close ones; there are others that seem to be content with "oh well, we came close." The last two days have supported my suspicion that this year's Twins are the latter. Does it come back to the discussion of a few days ago about "character"?
  6. Not to belabor, but to me the "character" I want in a player is someone who makes his teammates better. This can occur in a lot of ways, but probably involves treating them with respect, showing respect for the game, working hard to improve, etc. If the Twins are drafting players who can make each other better, then they should succeed.
  7. Every organization probably has a dozen or more replacement-level players. Over any 30-60 day period any of these can be very good (or very bad). But few will turn out to be quality MLB starters over a longer period. If two years from now Goodrum is an automatic on the lineup card for the Tigers (or anyone else), then I'll agree with you. Remember Andrew Albers!
  8. Is there a reason why a runner would not touch the plate with the leading leg? If he does that he's safe by several feet.
  9. Or use the DH for him and let the pitchers bat.
  10. 2-0 is a big lead in (real) football ... or against the Twins.
  11. I'm not convinced that would help. I'm sorry to say that I've given up on Buxton and Sano, and therefore on this generation of the Twins' offense. Little Whiff and Big Whiff.
  12. When Buxton breaks a bat it reassures me that the one he is using is actually made of wood, not a plastic whiffle bat. Of course, it rarely matters because he does not often make contact.
  13. I was watching the Lookouts' game. Wade crashed really, really hard into the wall making a catch to end the sixth. He was down on the ground for several minutes, then got up and walked off with obvious pain in his left shoulder. He appeared to be walking uncomfortably as well, and several times reached down to touch the inside of his right thigh. The announcer talked only about the shoulder, so maybe the leg isn't a problem.
  14. Early game. Stat line: Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Trevor May (L, 0-1) 4.0 3 1 1 2 5 0 2.25 60 pitches, 41 strikes
  15. Nothing at all wrong with ties! I hate that American sports can't just leave games tied.
  16. I'm really sorry to see him fade. He is a class act. I will always remember him for the way he reacted to falling one out short of an incentive clause in his 209.2 inning season. How many of us could lose out on what (for us, at least) would be a huge payday and not show any resentment?
  17. Morneau made a comment on the Sunday broadcast to the effect that other teams didn't seem to hate the Twins when he played because they recognized and respected that the Twins played the game "the right way." This team does not play "the right way." There is no hustle or enthusiasm. Some have commented on Dozier's apparent lack of hustle, and he's supposed to be one of the leaders. There just doesn't seem to be anyone exhibiting the attitude of "if I just work a little harder, maybe I can help turn this around." More like "I can't wait for this game to be over?" Or "Oh, well. I still get a nice big check in my bank account." It really makes them hard to watch (along with the losing, of course).
  18. I made the plunge and bought MiLB.TV this year. These games are often much less depressing than the Twins, especially when the latter are being Yankeed. Not sure whom I'll watch tonight, but there are a lot of choices. (Even the Twins ... maybe ... at least until they get depressingly far behind.)
  19. One particular danger of the small sample size here is *which* lefties he has faced and how that compares with past years. Have the Twins faced the same elite quality lefties so far this year that they always face over a full season and, to the extent they have, has Max hit against them?
  20. Five looooong days we waited ........ for this? I guess I shouldn't complain because they were facing an awfully good pitcher, but it was really disappointing to see it all fall apart in the middle innings.
  21. Slightly off topic: I don't know much about modern defensive metrics and exactly how they are calculated, but the comments here seem to suggest that range on batted balls is the main factor. But (uniquely) for firstbasemen, the most important defensive action may be saving errors on other players' errant throws. Is there a defensive metric for firstbasemen that measures "defensive errors saved"? Joe sure has saved a lot of them, but I haven't watched enough other firstbasemen to know how he compares.
  22. And every unexpected off day in April is a doubleheader or a cancelled off day later in the season.
  23. Deserved kudos to Joe, but I can't resist saying that the starting pitcher was absolutely ... Berrilliant! The White Sox have to be saying "Do we really have to play against this guy for 4+ more years?"
  24. I also love the daily top-prospect summary. It summarizes one of the key pieces of content for which I previously had to hunt in the articles. (And often the top prospects would not be discussed unless they got two hits or contributed to a run.) Another feature that would be great would be a weekly (or even monthly) cumulative statistical summary of these prospects, along with others who have made themselves interesting since the prospect list was published. I know all of this takes a lot of time, but it would be another excellent addition.
