  1. I concur Halsey - I am rooting for the Cubs and Astros but I think the Cubs will have a tough time against the Dodgers. So the Astros may be the only ones who can save us from a Yankees-Dodgers World Series. I saw someone call the Yankees the Cinderella team this year...umm, no. The Yankees will never be a Cinderella team. They're the Yankees.
  2. Seems like a common sentiment, after the Angels were eliminated from the wild card race I saw that Angels fans were posting that Trout is wasted on their team.
  3. Rough week for Indians and Nationals fans...no wonder the Indians haven't won the World Series in about 70 years. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. Still rooting for the Astros.
  4. Was thinking the same thing so I was enjoying living vicariously through the Indians last night watching Bauer shut down the Yankees.
  5. First of all - go Indians. 'Nuf said about that. I'm a Twins fan but I can't muster hatred of Aaron Judge, even though he wears the pinstripes he is an exciting player and seems like a decent guy. On the opposite side I can't stand Aroldis Chapman, I wanted the Cubs to win last year but part of me enjoyed watching the game tying home run in the World Series. And how can you not like Jose Altuve? Dude's about as big as me and he hit three home runs yesterday. Since I am a Twins fan I have sympathy for fans of other teams that haven't won in awhile so I'm rooting for the Indians (or secondly the Astros). I guess you could put the Nationals in that category but they are still kinda new - their fans haven't suffered enough, haha. I like the Cubs but they just won last year and the Diamondbacks and Red Sox have also won recently. And really, who roots for the Yankees or the Dodgers?
  6. Seems like it would be kind of a tricky situation (like the president visiting an area after a natural disaster) - you don't want to make it look like you're abandoning them but at the same time when the whole country is without power playing a baseball game isn't a priority. I would put more stock in what Thad Levine said - Bert Blyleven said on the telecast the other night that he's sure they would still play but I figured that was just him trying to be Nostradamus...
  7. My favorite scoreboard watching experience was when I was in Colorado for the end of the 2007 season - the Rockies had won something like 14 of their last 15 games and had to beat the Diamondbacks to force a one game playoff with the Padres. So any time we heard a random cheer in the middle of the game we knew it was because they had put something on the scoreboard that the Padres were losing. I'm not even a Rockies fan but it was a really fun experience to be part of, Coors Field is a great ballpark and we had beautiful fall weather in Denver too. We were all very jealous because we had all flown out to Denver so had to leave but one of my friends had driven out there so he stayed for the tiebreaker game the next day. And then the Rockies went on to the World Series that year so it was pretty fun to watch that after having just been there.
  8. Same old story...nothing that a pitcher (or five) wouldn't fix. As Earl Weaver once said - do you know what you do when you think you have enough pitching? You go out and get more pitching. Of course you could say this about pretty much any team, not just the Twins!
  9. Where's the love for Nik Turley. Seriously, that's why Santana gets the big bucks...
  10. I saw the article about game four - baseball is a crazy game. Wow, must have been amazing to be at that one. Congrats to the Goldeyes, I got to watch them when they were playing the Saints this year and they had a good team.
  11. It's times like this that I always think of the Bill Mazeroski quote from when he hit the home run to beat the Yankees in the 1960 World Series - someone asked him what he was thinking about when he was rounding the bases and he said all he could think was "We beat the Yankees! We beat the Yankees!" Some things never change... I would rather play the Yankees in a one game playoff than in a series. It's baseball, in one game anything crazy can happen. Yes I realize that means something crazy could happen to beat us but that would be par for the course... Well, the Cubs won the World Series last year so hope springs eternal.
  12. Thanks spycake - interesting to hear this.
  13. I like the fact that the championship is Winnipeg versus Wichita. Very alliterative! Seriously though, I got to watch the Goldeyes a few times this season and they have a good team...
  14. I remember my mom saying at the time I will always remember where I was that day - she's always said she remembers the Kennedy assassination like it was yesterday. I was usually one of the first ones at my office and when I was in the kitchen getting water one of my co-workers said, "Hey, did you hear a plane hit the World Trade Center?" And I remember saying, "Huh, that's weird" and going back to my desk thinking nothing of it, must have been an accident with a small plane. I'll never forget that feeling when more co-workers came into the office about 20 minutes later and said a second plane had hit the second tower and they were hijacked commercial airliners. My first thought was for my cousin who lived in New York City at the time (and still does) and of course when I tried to call him all I got was a message saying "all circuits are busy." Didn't find out for hours if he was okay. Before I went to visit him last year I pulled out some old photos from when we visited him in 2000 and all of the sudden I turned the page of my photo album (yes, this is back when you would take photos and print them out...) and there was one from the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island ferry of the New York skyline with the WTC towers dominating the picture. It literally took my breath away.
  15. I also thought the base runner should have been ejected (it looked pretty blatant to me and he would have been safe if he were to slide) but I wasn't sure if that was just my bias because I'm a Saints fan and their catcher had to be helped off the field after that play, since he was jumping to catch the throw he had no way to brace and protect himself from the collision. I did ask an umpire who mentioned something about voluntary release - I'm not a technical expert either but it may refer to the fact that however long he held the ball when he let it go it wasn't voluntary so that may be why the runner was called safe. Always something new to learn in this game.
  16. I was also at Tuesday's game and two people have asked me about that play since then so apparently it's not a well understood rule...but it's the rule nonetheless. And it also reminds me that it's great that it is September and people are still paying attention to the Twins.
  17. If anyone wants to watch an interesting play, it happened in the top of the 4th of the Saints last home game of the season last night. I won't recap the whole thing here, but it led to a benches clearing brawl and I want to ask an umpire the legalities of the whole play. Pleffner (Winnipeg) was at the plate, Romanski was at second and Abercrombie was on first. If you go to the Saints home page and click on video it brings you to the American Association web page where you can view replays from past games.
  18. What I remember is Twins fans booing AJ when he came back with the White Sox. Maybe it was mostly because he's a bad ass and was with the White Sox but I remember thinking we shouldn't be booing him, we should be thanking him - that was not only arguably the greatest trade in Twins history, it also allowed Joe Mauer to take over as catcher. I'm guessing we'll see Joe Nathan in the Twins HOF at some point. Still remember when I got my picture taken with him at Twins Fest after he had been traded to us but before he had played a game, hard to believe that was 13 years ago. But when I was listening to Michael Cuddyer's HOF speech I was remembering reading an article about him and the headline was something like "Top Twins prospect also does card tricks." Yes, I am getting old...
  19. Considering this was the first time in MLB history that a perfect game was broken up in the 9th inning with an error and then the no hitter was broken up by a walk off home run I thought that would be more memorable than being at a no hitter!
  20. I saw the partial eclipse as it peeked through the clouds in Minneapolis once so that was fun. It seemed like a precarious thing to plan a vacation around - what if you spent hundreds of dollars to travel somewhere months in advance and then it was cloudy that day? Even when I went to the College World Series I bought a ticket in advance to one game just to be sure to see some baseball and Omaha is close enough that I just drove down there. But my friend that lives in Nashville said it was awesome so would have been cool to be somewhere in the path of totality.
  21. Yep...that one's built to last.
  22. It was fun when the Saints had the All-Star Game at CHS Field last year because you got to see some Can-Am players and learn about the teams that you don't normally see.
  23. I had the opposite thing happen at a recent Saints game. It was ball four and the batter (not a Saint, an opposing player) didn't move, obviously he lost track of the count. I looked down at my scorebook confused and then looked up to see the umpire saying something and pointing toward first base. The batter had a look on his face like, "Oh!" It was pretty funny.
  24. I was at the game on Sunday and the Saints left 10 runners on base. I think they were tired from Saturday's game. I've had a chance to watch both the Lincoln Saltdogs and Winnipeg Goldeyes this season and they have good teams. Wish I could get to more games this summer but the road construction and traffic is impeding my path to CHS Field, ugh!
  25. Yeah, you can't trust those Canadians. I remember when I was younger we were in Ottawa on Canada Day and they invited us into their parliament building to get cake. Happy 150th to our northern friends, look forward to seeing you when the Blue Jays come to town.
