  1. IMO, I believe Molitor liked Rosario over more than just Hicks. Molitor was really unhappy about Arcia, Sano and Vargas getting into a SP home run contest, when they should have been working on their mechanics. Sure, he needs some tuning up, but my Rookie of the Year vote goes to Rosario. BTW: Great article!
  2. Congratulations to Tyler Duffey on a great year! So, how does Duffey fit into next years rotation? Many are not enamored with the rotation setup. What is (is there?) a plan to phase out some of the veterans to make room for a successful minor league, turned successful major league, pitcher?
  3. Great season and news for Kepler! Playing time? meh. The only message being sent here is Congratulations on a great year from an appreciative Twins management.
  4. Great analysis! What caught my eye was how much Escobar's 2013 right-side hitting looks similar to Buxton right now. The tap, tap tapping thing isn't a big deal. But not planting that front foot is. I'm starting to believe that the Twins hitting coaches actually have an organizational plan for developing hitters! Esocbar's line in his 59 games this year at SS: .311BA .359OBP .539SLG .898OPS
  5. "For the immediate future, shortstop will be manned by Eduardo Escobar or whatever free agent the Twins choose to bring in over the offseason." Really? Checkout Escobar's stats and explain to me why his status as the starting shortstop is only "immediate future". Last 23 games: .310BA .344OPB .609SLG .953OPS 59 games this year as a SS: .311 .359 .539 .898
  6. Always an interesting read for those of us who don't get a chance to watch MiLB games! For Trevor Hildenberger: with his overwhelming success in A-ball, wouldn't a move to AA next year make sense? What to do with Michael Tonkin? Hook him up with another organizations AAA affiliate and see how he does against different hitter? He's 25 and in the MiLB since 2008. Somethings gotta change, right?
  7. "Because while the Twins may or may not overcome the Astros (or Rangers) and earn a chance to participate in the wild-card play-in, we're still getting to experience the excitement of contention in September, adding a level of drama that previously would have been amiss." Manufactured, not earned, drama IMHO.
  8. OMG, that's Roy Smalley on the Twins broadcast? He needs to stop talking once in a while He sounds more like a management shill each time I hear him. Yea, I think the MLB experience is good for him, like it was for Hicks. Buxton's hitting has been bad. He had a 2 hit game yesterday, so maybe something is changing. However, in 121 PA's he has only 5 walks. For the season, Buxton has a .242 OBP and a .514 OPS, the latter Bill James rates a "G Atrocious". The thing I would want to see is better plate discipline. I believe Molitor wants the same thing, as he is sitting Buxton and pinch hitting for him a lot. There's not much left of the season, so he really bears watching over the final few weeks.
  9. I like the way Terry Ryan is handling things. Some people are ready when they're ready [ Sano ]. Some, you want to be a little more careful with. Buxton is one [he only got called up because there was a need], Berrios is another. He's really proven himself by his ability to make adjustments at each new level. And I like what Duffey and Gonsalves has done so far. A future 3/5ths of a rotation.
  10. Perkins is not entrenched as the closer. At least he shouldn't be. The way he's been breaking down after the around the All Star break, I would have start looking for a replacement 2-3 years ago. I'm a little stunned that the advanced statistics crowd hasn't shot down the Save stat. And Storen, let me see if I get this straight: he publicly voices his discontent about the Papelbon trade, suddenly starts pitching poorly, gets upset after a game and punches out his locker and breaks his thumb. You really want this guy?? Adding reference to "Save Replacement" stats. Would have posted before, but found "Meltdown" to be a little bitchy... http://grantland.com/the-triangle/blowing-up-baseballs-most-dangerous-stat/ http://www.fangraphs.com/library/pitching/sd-md/
  11. I readily admit I was one of those guys. Same things were said about Hicks and Buxton is pretty much the same point Hicks was earlier this year: his hitting mechanics are a little messy in the lower trunk. Hicks got fixed by using the "step in the bucket" approach. Buxton's front foot is still tapping around too much. At some point, Buxton needs to commit that front foot before he can hit.
  12. I like all the "Buxton runs really fast and catches the ball" stuff. Hey, he has a pretty good arm, too. But he's still GOT to hit and have a much better OBP. If he doesn't greatly improve over the last few weeks of the season and in Spring Training, Buxton's in for a 3rd trip back to AAA. Just like Hicks did.
  13. Jepsen, Cotts and Hunter were all brought in for a reason. Hunter, to full the gap in development time for Hicks, Rosario and Buxton, provide vocal leadership and easy some of the pain in having both Schaefer and Robinson on the same roster. Jepsen and Cotts were brought in because the veterans that were bought in and Perkins were burning out. The guys brought up from MiLB kinda sucked as a whole. I don't know why anyone is still bringing David Price. Either Ryan didn't make an offer [building from the minors up] or he made an offer and Detroit countered "Give us Sano and + + + +".
  14. It's way past time the Twins yank Pelfrey from the rotation and put him in the bullpen, where he actually could be useful. 2.28 ERA on June 7, 4.17 now.
  15. And back where he belongs in centerfield!
  16. I got to watch Vargas playing 1B a couple times. He really didn't embarrass himself. I'm not banging on Mauer, but I'd like to seem him playing 1st more than a few times in September.
  17. CBS Sports says Hicks will be activated on Friday: http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasybaseball/update/25288605/twins-of-aaron-hicks-ready-for-friday-return Good. Buxton needs to sit for awhile and take some more coaching on how to hit.
  18. To suck or not to suck. Is that the question? Pedro Florimon was considered an elite defensive shortstop, at least by Gardy. Where is he now? Buxton has the quick wrists to be able to hit in the MLB. He just needs time to work out his mechanics some more. He's been so bad at the plate I can't really tell how good is eye is. If, like Sano, Buxton had some 0'fer days that included a walk, it would be a different story. The real question here is whether that should happen while the Twins as a whole are chasing the final WC spot?
  19. D Santana: end of last year [mainly in CF] had regular AB's and was successful. Fast forward to 2015: Moved back to his original SS, had fielding issues, got yanked from starting lineup and with diminished, regular AB's, didn't hit either. E Esocbar: after a successful 2014 season at SS with regular AB's, EE gets moved to a utility role, has diminished regular AB's and doesn't hit well. Fast forward to a ~month ago, EE is moved into the starting SS role and "hitting .295/.375/.577 in August with much sharper defense and surprisingly strong plate discipline" Is the ability to have a starting role and consistent AB's directly related to better all around performance? Or a fluke compared to their minor league production?
  20. Question: Should we be concerned about ABW2's low BA and really high K's? His OPS is a solid above average, maybe even borderline very good. His BB's are pretty good, considering he's K'd 187 times. I'm kinda hoping he has potential to approximate another Sano.....
  21. Very nicely written! Seriously, you had me at "Amidst their organizational swoon in recent years, the Twins have typically set a modest goal at the outset of each season: play meaningful games in September." Twins could really use a guy like Abreu hitting behind Sano. With Sano's patience at the plate, maybe the other way around. Not sure there's any of those in the minors. Prospects, yes. An Abreu, not that I know of. What I'd really like to see out of this series is Buxton taking a few walks. He really needs to learn the strike zone.
  22. I like the 5. Twins need to find out what they've got in Vargas, Achter and Tonkin. The only development time Santana lost is when the Twins moved him back to short after a successful year as a CF. Just like the bad move they made with Escobar. Look where he is now.... Fryer? Do the Twins really need a 3rd catcher? A backup anything will not hit very well if the don't get consistent PA's.
  23. There was a guy who play for the Twins a long-ish time ago who was referred to as a "professional hitter". I can't remember his name, but he was a really good contact / clutch hitter. Crowley, maybe? Anyway, that's the type of hitter I'd want on the bench to pinch hit. Vargas isn't a contact hitter.
