  1. I haven't bothered to look it up, but seems like over the past few years, Nolasco has pitched slightly over the number of inning as a starter than a typical long relief pitcher. Sounds like the ideal candidate. A couple LOOGY's seem to be necessary. I agree with those saying that it may just be a MiLB to MLB rotation this year. Which can be good.
  2. Would have been, could have been, should have been. I think we pretty much know how this will play out. He who has the contract gets the job. However, I'm also on the side that says: if another pitcher forces the issue, they get the job. Duffey [after the horrible decision to bring him up against a Blue Jays team that just reloaded] pitched very well and deserves a shot at starting. Berrios was protected. The Twins follow a loose rule that says you allow a young starter to pitch an increased number of pitches per year. MiLB.com says 166 for the year. I'd say he's ready for the next step, and in the MLB. I'd like to see both force this issue during Spring Training.
  3. Heck, I don't know why teams have scout at all! Because they can always call you and ask for the statistics. Done with you.
  4. You're a funny guy: you want to use statistics, then think they'll apply to 3 games. Statistical analysis is a useful tool. In the end, players will still be judged by the "eye test".
  5. Arcia in a platoon makes the most sense. Coming off the bench; not so much.
  6. Santana: separate the SS Santana from the CF Santana and how do the stats look? And I'm just not a real big believer in BABIP. It seems like a stat built in search of a problem. Moving him back to the OF seems to make a lot of sense. Worse case: be-all utility man. Arcia: I don't get the love for this guy coming off the bench. Lot's of K's, poor defense. Without consistent reps, I don't see where his power level would be sustainable. Tonkins: You've got to give him a real chance.
  7. Why Byron Buxton Will Win The Job: Because the Twins want him to." Yeah, duh I wonder how much it will take in SP to make this happen? IF, Buxton is going to be a lead-off hitter, he'll need to show better plate discipline and take some walks. Can he show that in SP? I'm just not feeling it. But it would be great to see him make it happen. "Why Danny Santana Will Win The Job: Santana already has some experience playing center in the big leagues, having performed well there as a rookie in 2014. His dynamic speed would be welcome in the lineup." Nice to see someone drinking that HitInAPinch Koolaid I like Santana and would like to see him get a shot. Rosario in CF: and what human statue will they put in LF? Ryan Sweeney, Darin Mastroianni, Joe Benson: The Three No's
  8. Suzuki's biggest problem last year was exhaustion.
  9. Quentin decided to make a comeback in November and didn't get signed until February. His agent shopped him around and it wasn't until the Twins picked up the phone did he get an invite. It was a generous thing for the Twins to do. I wouldn't read anything else into this.
  10. Yeah. And if I read the article correctly, Melotakis hasn't faced live pitching since Oct 14, 2014. In Spring Training would he get enough reps to make that big of an impression? I hope I'm wrong. I really like stories like this!
  11. Unless something has changed recently, Milone is a starter.
  12. The plan seems to start with Perkins and Jepsen at the end, May, Fien and Abbad working the middle. The rest of the plan [so far] seems to point towards running through the list of MiLB relievers to see who sticks. Pressly deserves first shot and Tonkin should get one, too. Twins just need to know what they've really got. And if more that one are successful, hey, Fien and Abbad are replaceable parts.
  13. The Twins have those same scouting reports on Eddie's 2015 season. This isn't a big problem. He just needs to make the adjustments from the rookie free-swinger to a more knowledgeable hitter.
  14. i.e. The reason Verlander's legs wore out last year. UFDA.....
  15. I have a lot of confidence in Eddie. The walk to strikeout thing is something that's expected over the course of a rookie season. I think he'll learn from it and have a successful 2nd year.
  16. I believe D. Santana will be the starting CF if Buxton doesn't win the job outright. But I'd rather see Buxton stay with the Twins and split duties with Santana to get more MLB experience. Left to right: Rosario, D. Santana and Sano starting, Arcia and Buxton on the bench with Nunez. Could be better: could be worse.
  17. I think the easy answer is to cut back on the "cheap" saves: "He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning." I don't have the stats in front of me, but it seemed like Perkins had more than a few of those. Jepsen was pretty good picking up the slack at the end of last year and I'm not worried about any regression. Let him take on the extra load.
  18. The comment on Polanco "blocked by Brian Dozier, Polanco best chance to break into the bigs probably is in a different organization." is the thing about the Twins that has always concerned me. I'd rather hear if there are any plans by Twins management to move veterans while they still have some value and promote those prospects. And a pull-back in FA veteran pitcher signings [plus the a fore mentioned veteran trades] to make a little room for the young pitching prospects.
  19. Like I said in your other view, 1 year + mutual option. I like to hedge my bets when it comes to promoting MiLB relief pitchers. Perkins health is another area of concern.
  20. Nobody's biting on Bastardo. 1 year @ 3-4 mil offer plus mutual option. I'm not 100% confident in bringing up multiple MiLB relievers without a backup plan.
  21. It's nice to see a MLB ready person should something happen to Plouffe [day off, slump, injury, trade, whatever]. I say that only because, beyond Sano, the 3rd replacements look to be utility players, players playing out of position or more than a few years away.
  22. IDK, that 'breakout' from Kepler was a pretty big change. If it were anyone else, we'd be hearing from people that this would make him a probable candidate for regression. His 1st - 2nd half numbers are pretty compatible. Definitely a long look in Spring Training. I'm betting management takes a conservative approach and Kepler starts in AAA. In the outfield: as the Twins have added more offense and stability in the everyday lineup, I could see Buxton starting in CF for defensive purposes. No matter where Sano starts out there, he's gonna have a rough start. Both Buxton and Rosario have the arm and speed to cover a lot of ground, whether it's CF / LF or CF / RF. But still think Buxton doesn't make it out of SP.
  23. Like Jepsen for 2 yrs. $11m. He's now 31 and seems to be improving with age. And I'd make the case that he should be co-closer with Perkins. Escobar for 2 yrs. as well. He's only 27. Up in the air on Plouffe. The ship has sailed on trading him, so 1yr and let's see what happens. Eduardo Nunez: can play several positions and can hit. Re-yupper
