I like the overall organization depth. I'm a little concerned with Dozier. Was the 2nd half decline due to injuries or pitchers catching onto Dozier? I've always like Danny Santana. Great arm for the job, but SS just doesn't seem to be his position. Looked good in CF in 2014 and sounds like he was doing well at 2nd. Liked what little I saw of Polanco in the MLB. Honestly, I thought he played 2B there, but Base Ball Reference says no.

Nice write-up, Seth. I'm not in the hand-wringing crowd: I think things will go well, with some adjustments along the way. I believe in his 2nd year as manager, Molitor will be a little quicker with the hook in moving under-performing veterans for younger players. That's not a knock on Mauer. I'm in the small group that believes he'll improve this year.

What are the odds of any MiLB player making it to MLB? Gotta think 7 out of 10 is well beyond it. In an extraordinary sample size........

Twinkie Town posted an article on Vargas yesterday: http://www.twinkietown.com/2016/1/6/10721496/what-happens-to-kennys-vargas Twins 1st-DH rotation could easily expand to Sano and Arcia to keep more consistent AB's for everyone. I'd still really like to see Vargas get a shot at MLB.....

Article: What's Left On The Market?
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess it all depends on where you think the Twins are at. Personally, I wouldn't want to hold up progress waiting for a prospect to be more than a prospect. Great players force their way into a lineup. I'd go "in" more on the bullpen. I believe Perkins is wearing out fast. Since they are still on the market, I don't believe a combo of Clippard and Bastardo would be cost prohibitive. I'd also like to hear what the current offers for Storen is. Like him as a paring for now and replacement of Perkins. In another article, people are bashing the crap outta Buxton, so I'll leave him alone. I'll just say this: he's still a prospect. Spring Training may sort this out, but I think there's enough OF talent on the roster right now that needs to be vetted before going after a 4th OF type. There's plenty of room for rotation into 1st or DH. -
Article: 5 Reasons To Be Excited About 2016
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I can't say I'm excited about all those things, but I am very curious on how this will play out. Park: IDK. The reported differences in KBO to MLB pitchers seems pretty large. Still, 50% of Park's KBO power would be a pretty sweet addition.Sano: not really all that worried about him in the OF. He's been pulled from the Winter Leagues to get in better shape. That's a pretty big plus, to me.I like Berros. I don't like the body-building mentality he has. People give a lot of Ooo's and ah's over the shirtless pictures. I see a bunch of pulled muscles in the future.Buxton: I don't understand why he get's a break from so many and there is little love for a guy like Rosario. As I've said before: Buxton's path to the MLB will follow what Sano did: Watch for the walks. If Buxton shows a better approach at the plate, he's in the MLB to stay. The Rotation: oy vey. I mean, the ERA was great jump. But doesn't that also make you wonder what it would have been if Hughes, Nolasco and Santana weren't in the rotation at all?- 32 replies

There's a difference between hitting HR's and being a hitter that teams fear. Pitchers feared Killebrew and Reggie Jackson. I believe Sano has shown enough, so far, that pitchers will fear him next year. Dozier, Arcia, Park and Vargas? Not so much. I think Escobar and Rosario will be more of a difference maker than those 4 [ not talking just home runs here ].

Another year of experience, moving up a level to a better quality of pitchers i.e. more pitches in the strikezone? I can see a pretty good drop in K's, which, hopefully, show and increase in BA, W and OBP. K's? 195 is too many at any level. I'm a believe that will drop some with better quality pitching in the upper minors. I'm with Mike: "he'll find a way to succeed in the majors"

Article: Let's Stop Discounting Tommy Milone
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The facts are the facts: 1. Milone isn't the big, sexy pitcher everyone wants. He's your basic grunt that get's the job done. 2. The Twins NEED May in the bullpen. -
Article: Building The Twins 2018 Lineup
HitInAPinch replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree: expect the changes to begin late 2016, early 2017. If these MiLB players are really ready, it's time to move on. 2018 seem pretty close for for Buxton. Frankly, if he's not a starting MLB CF by 2017, he should be elsewhere. Seth, earlier this year you responded to me that Buxton would have value if he was able to hit like Gary Petite. Right now, he's not a 5 tool player. And I think it too much to expect that.- 24 replies

Article: Building The Twins 2018 Lineup

I will never believe this. Defense is important at catcher: it's either him or the backstop. But if he's truly a MLB player, he must hit.- 24 replies

Article: Trevor May Should Be In The Rotation
HitInAPinch replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The key is who's in the bullpen, not in the rotation. I liked May in the rotation. He was something the Twins haven't had: a pitcher that has the ability to strike guys out. And I think everyone recognizes what the problem is now: Ryan went one step to far in the signing of veteran pitchers to bailout the starting staff. In the bullpen, it sounds questionable whether or not any of the big arms in the MiLB can get the job done. The combo of the 2 puts May in the bullpen. Now if a Tonkin, Meyer, etc. takes over a couple spots, then I can't see how the Twins could keep May out of the rotation. -
Walker and Kepler have to of the prettiest AB mechanics I've ever seen. Balanced and repeatable. Arcia? It's seems like it's always been about pitch selection and keeping his head in the game.

Article: Like It Or Not, May Is Bullpen Bound
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The starting rotation has 3 spots that I say are mortal locks: Santana, Hughes and Gibson. Obviously, the first 2 is a contract thing. But also, we haven't seen enough of Santana yet and you just don't dump a guy who had one very good year, followed by a very hit-able year. Gibson: well, he improved over the previous year. IMHO: that leave 2 spots in the rotation up for grabs. The issue with May is few things: Other rotation options are available He probably didn't get enough starts to prove he belongs in the rotation. Because of.... Need. And success in the bullpen. The dude stood up to the challenge and was successful. It's not the 1st time in the history of Baseball that a starter work some time in the bullpen before being returned to the rotation. As I remember, Adam Wainwright is the pitcher most commented on in TD. On the flip side: Wainwright was 23-24 in a fraction of the first year and a full season in the 2nd in the bullpen. He returned to the rotation at age 25. May is 26. -
Article: What Holes Still Must Be Filled?
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, Nick, I just can't see an OF with both Sano and Arcia in it at the same time. While we don't know how Sano will play in the OF, I still don't like moving a guy who was successful last year to accommodate 2 defensive stiffs like those 2. Come to think of it: why do so many think Arcia will get the chance? I don't know what happened to him last season, but Arcia had a horrible year. While I like the combo of Nunez and Santana as bench players, I don't like the idea of a talented kid like Santana being regulated to the bench. Nunez is a career backup. Find another like him. Buxton: it's not about the BA, it's about the PA's. Pitching: ugh. I'd rather see Nolasco in the BP and Milone elsewhere than keep Duffy and Berrios out of the rotation. Milone has some trade value. They WILL need May in the BP -
As part of a Strib column, La Velle E. Neal III wrote: Santana the outfielder The Twins remain in the market for a fourth outfielder, but they might already have one. Danny Santana, who showed plenty of promise in 2014 but struggled and lost the starting shortstop job in 2015, is going to start playing more outfield. That gives the Twins another option if top prospect Byron Buxton has a poor spring training or if they need a backup outfielder. Santana hit .319 in 2014. As a center fielder, he batted .316 with a .843 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. As a shortstop, he batted .295 with a .716 OPS. He started last season at short, batted .218 through 49 games and was sent to the minors for the first of two demotions. So the Twins are wondering if not worrying about playing shortstop will help him unleash his offensive potential.

Defensive Woes Follow Danny Santana To Dominican
HitInAPinch commented on Tom Froemming's blog entry in Get to know 'em
Quote: "That indicated to me that the club is neither sold of Escobar as its shortstop nor convinced that Santana is doomed at the position." Oh, come on. The last game of the season, you can't draw this type of conclusion. Escobar is the starting shortstop next season. Quote: "...so I believe Danny Santana's last shot as an everyday player with the Twins (barring injury of course) is as the Opening Day center fielder next season." This makes a lot of sense, baring a new outfielder stepping in and taking over a spot so that Rosario gets shifted to center. -
Article: Relief Role Playing
HitInAPinch replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
May loses out on a starting spot due to what he did in the pen last year. Good problem to have; not sure May would be a fan. If we believe the Twins are contenders, I would take a close look at both Sipps and Bastardo. Sipps is reportedly good at facing hitters on both sides of the plate. Bastardo has the power. Reports are $5-6M and around 3 years for either, so far. The RP scenario could be rapidly changing. How many pitcher did the Twins have in the pen last year? 7? Perkins & Jepsen closers [got to protect Perkins], May & Bastardo 7-8, Sipps & Tonkin & Meyer/Presley longish. Too bad I'm not the GM, eh?- 46 replies

Article: Shields For Nolasco: Would You Do It?
HitInAPinch replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I thought this topic had been beaten to death. And here it's risen from the dead, again. Shields for Nolasco? Even if the Padres want to dump his salary, no way do they trade Shields for a now middle reliever. Mix and match additional parts all your want. Still a no.- 108 replies
