  1. I think there's way to much reactionary ideas going around on Twins Daily [if there is such a thing about real Baseball Fans!! ] I don't see an immediate need to make major changes to a team that's winning. I still believe [apparently until my dieing day] the best lineup would have been D. Santana in CF and Escobar at SS. But now look what's happening in the OF!! Rosario is now hitting .302. Hicks average is back up to .255 and playing excellent CF. Is there really a need to keep running SS's to the OF any more?? When Polanco got a taste of the big leagues last year, didn't he play 2B? His hitting stats say he's probably ready for AAA.
  2. IMHO: I don't think the lack quality pitches is the issue. The problem is there's too many quality pitches and quality MLB hitters know that. They know they can depend on Hughes being in the strikezone on a consistent basis and can hack away. His available pitches aren't good enough to get away with that for a 2nd year. He needs to start brushing more hitters back off the plate.
  3. 72. Which means another 90 loss season. I'll take anything less than 90 losses at this point.
  4. The Twins have had success grabbing pitchers of the MLB scrapheap and turning them into quality relief pitchers. Burton and Fien come to mind. They've also been pretty good at transforming not-so-effective starters into quality relievers. Latroy Hawkins is the best example I can think of. We've got Duensing and Stauffer hanging around now. Maybe that magic has ended. Good thing there seems to be better, younger options available. I really take exception to Glen Perkins as "we have a stud closer". In Perkins, I see a lot of "3a" saves. As in MLB save rule 3a that says "He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning;". To me, if there's no active threat, that's not "saving" anything.
  5. Danny Santana plays CF, where he was successful last year. Eduardo Escobar is the starting SS, where he was successful last year.
  6. Thanks for the responses. The reason I asked was because I was looking for a reason for the sharp jump in his hitting stats. Composite bat, huh? Crime against nature, says I.....
  7. Question: Do college teams still use aluminum bats?
  8. That horse is D E A D. Smelly, even :-) The difference is simply this: after 4 90+ loss years, Terry Ryan did something that hadn't been seen in, how many decades?? As a player, you can take only so much losing without a big change. The cleansing of the coaching staff is a big deal to player. It gives them hope. They try a little harder, they concentrate a little harder. Let's see how far they get with the current team. If the Twins are still in the ballpark of .500 by the All Star break, let's see what TR will do to jackup the team for a playoff run!
  9. They need Eduardo Escobar at SS full time. He needs AB's on a regular basis.
  10. A few things come to mind.... Nolasco has won 5 in a row because Twins batters have put up big numbers. Nolasco needs to replicate last nights numbers. Twins hitters seem to have figured out that jumping on pitchers early can lead to greater success. Last nights fun fact: every starter got a hit. Big deal. Every starter 4-9 in the lineup had at least 2 hits! Has the move of Escobar back to starting SS begun? Is Danny Santana having pressure issues playing SS? Is that why he had so much success when playing CF last year? Twins still need Hicks to hit. Kennys Vargas looks like he getting relaxed at AAA And once and for all, this just in from Terry Ryan.............. The move to the bullpen is only temporary, Ryan reiterated. “He’s got probably the best stuff we have in the organization, as a starter. Maybe this will be a good situation for him,” the general manager said. “We want to get him straightened out and back in the rotation.”
  11. The last time I saw a real ACE pitching for the Twins, it was Johan Santana. Dumped the circle-change on the outside corner [ or just outside ] to righthanded hitters, popped the fastball inside if they started leaning over. He had a plan. Kyle Gibson looked like he might be developing a plan. He pitched a really good game and should have been allowed to finish it off.
  12. I think several of the pitchers are trade-able, but you're in the wrong time of year. Sometime around the mid-July heat, pitchers with start wearing out and getting injured. Milone, Stauffer, Nolasco and Duensing are all trade-able. Especially when other teams are desperate and will pay a premium for one of them. By premium, I mean maybe AA talent. Anything beyond that, you gotta make a package that'll include a couple players you cough cough don't have room for.
  13. What works in the MiLB doesn't always translate to the MLB. It's the MLB version of the "KISS" theory. He's using what he's got to get MLB hitters out.
  14. Only if it bags Cole Hamels as well. Tossing Ben Revere to make me happy
  15. With the makeup of the Twins, I don't know if stellar defense will outweigh the need for major league average hitting at any position.
  16. A Len 3 article today seems to clear it up a little more: demoted to bullpen to take some of the pressure off and clear his head and work on his arm angle. He'll be back as a starter. http://www.startribune.com/twins-notes-meyer-sent-to-bullpen-at-class-aaa-rochester/304789931/
  17. I've seen enough video of Meyer that I can tell you this with absolute confidence: Meyer does not keep a consistent release point. When he drops his arm angle down, flat out sidearm, he's very hittable. Not much movement on his pitches. When he stays up top, his pitches have a lot more movement. Fixing mechanics isn't always an easy fix. On the other hand, Betances is a high octane, balls-to-the-walls pitcher. Max effort on every pitch. Hence the 135k's in 90 innings. His problem is all of the above. He burns out after, maybe, a couple innings. He can no longer control that big body and it gets really ugly. Simple fix: watch the pitch count. Oh yeah, when Betances tries to pump it up to 100mph, his delivery goes, nuts, too
  18. 1. The White Sox have a nice run going 2. There's no way Sale will be as bad as he was the last time facing the Twins 3. They're playing at home 4. You know they're gonna remember they got swept by the Twins. My money is on the White Sox. I hope I'm wrong...
  19. I've watched Betances on TV a few times. Meyer will never be a Dellin Betances.
  20. From what I read, at Baseball America and MLB Trade Rumors, I'd definitely pass on this kid. The Twins rotation is already filled with middle of the rotation types and there's already several in the MiLB that are better that Ruiz is.
  21. Again, it's been reported that Joe's left leg is health for the 1st time in over a year. That's the leg he drives off of. The Summer months are upon us and we should see an up-tick from all hitters. Beginning his 12th year, he still has a .318 lifetime BA. Of course he's declining. The biggest issue is: who's ready to take over 1st?
  22. In the MiLB, there seems to be several/many "wait and see" types. Right now, this moment in time, that includes Buxton. The hope is that there is now enough OF talent at the MLB level to give the MiLB talent another year to mature. "Escobar has been playing a lot of left field, for some reason." This just makes me sick. Stunning waste of talent, especially considering Santana's problems, so far. Arcia, Robinson and Hunter have shown their worth. Schafer has not [probably never will], Rosario probably needs AAA time to calm down a little and Hicks may have finally arrived. Time will tell. If things go well, the Twins will probably need to focus on both middle INF and OF in this draft.
  23. "Lies, damn lies and then there's statistics" has always been my mantra. That's always been my beef with Sabermetrics. It seems to be going out of the way to prove a player actually has more worth than they actually are [ WAR is probably my biggest beef ] or worse than the actually are. A metric for whatever suits your needs. That being said...... Torii Hunter IS 40 years old. He IS in his 19th season. The fact that he can still play the field and carry an eyeball-estimate .280+ average over the past 5 years is pretty amazing stuff. However.... He is 40 and the summer heat is coming upon us. When pro athletes perform beyond their expected decline age, their skills, generally speaking, will suddenly stop. My hope is the Twins REALLY have someone ready to take over RF when this happens.
  24. Boyer had been a very nice placeholder and is driving up his value!
  25. My take is the Twins definitely need to be drafting more INF talent. A lot more. What they have right now seems to be a nice mix, but my gut feeling is they'll need them sooner rather than later.
