  1. I got to watch some of D. Santana play both OF and SS in MLB. I don't think there's much question that he's been better in CF and SS. Sabermetrics be damned, Danny did OK as the year went on in 2014 in CF. What other options did the Twins have at the time? The options right now are Buxton, et and al. His play at SS last year has sealed his fate: CF or utility player.
  2. The Twins are doing a nice thing here and have little to lose. Carlos Quentin had to walk away because of chronic knee injuries/pain. He wanted to give it another go and the Twins obliged. IMO, the Twins did a very nice thing.
  3. Obviously an evil plot by Terry Ryan to get Twins Daily folks all riled up. My god, he's an evil genius...
  4. Yeah. And if I read the article correctly, Melotakis hasn't faced live pitching since Oct 14, 2014. In Spring Training would he get enough reps to make that big of an impression? I hope I'm wrong. I really like stories like this!
  5. Thanks, Mike. Nice article. Sano was making those adjustments in minor league ball last year.
  6. Did anyone besides me read the whole article? Last paragraph: “I’m really happy about the chance Paul Molitor and Terry Ryan give me to be in the lineup,” Sano said. “If I need to play catcher, first base, whatever, I’ll play it because I want to be in the lineup.’’ Good enough for me!
  7. Completely agree. My belief has always been that Santana hit better in 2014 because he was more comfortable in CF. Watching his play with the Twins at SS was a little tough to watch. Great arm, poor footwork. If Buxton is deemed not ready, what's the harm in seeing Part 2, D. Santana in CF? Worse that'll happen is Buxton get's fired up in AAA, takes over CF and Santana is a super utility player?
  8. In the early 70's the Dodgers had 2 catchers that they moved to other positions. Joe Ferguson and Steve Yeager. As I remember it, Ferguson hit for some power and was moved to RF when Yeager arrived. Ferguson got traded because Yeager was far better defensively. Yeager never really hit.
  9. Unless something has changed recently, Milone is a starter.
  10. The plan seems to start with Perkins and Jepsen at the end, May, Fien and Abbad working the middle. The rest of the plan [so far] seems to point towards running through the list of MiLB relievers to see who sticks. Pressly deserves first shot and Tonkin should get one, too. Twins just need to know what they've really got. And if more that one are successful, hey, Fien and Abbad are replaceable parts.
  11. Isn't it typical for a catcher being moved to a new position to take a couple years to get back into the groove?
  12. Is Austin Jackson a better fit for the roster than Trevor Plouffe? No. Basically, you're plan is dumping a starting 3rd-baseman to make room for an outfielder who is still a free agent at age 29. I don't see a big upside here. We just don't know how well Sano will perform in the outfield. With DSantana and Rosario around and the small herd of middling OF's they brought in earlier, I don't really see a need to bring in another OF at this point. And TR has already said he won't trade Plouffe.
  13. The Twins have those same scouting reports on Eddie's 2015 season. This isn't a big problem. He just needs to make the adjustments from the rookie free-swinger to a more knowledgeable hitter.
  14. I wonder how the owners would feel about paying a MLB salary to 3 players everyday to sit and stay. Actually, no I don't.
  15. Well, he's Strong.....
  16. i.e. The reason Verlander's legs wore out last year. UFDA.....
  17. I have a lot of confidence in Eddie. The walk to strikeout thing is something that's expected over the course of a rookie season. I think he'll learn from it and have a successful 2nd year.
  18. Has anyone actually heard anything about Lucroy's recovery from the concussion? I did a quick Google and couldn't find anything.
  19. I believe D. Santana will be the starting CF if Buxton doesn't win the job outright. But I'd rather see Buxton stay with the Twins and split duties with Santana to get more MLB experience. Left to right: Rosario, D. Santana and Sano starting, Arcia and Buxton on the bench with Nunez. Could be better: could be worse.
  20. I think the easy answer is to cut back on the "cheap" saves: "He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning." I don't have the stats in front of me, but it seemed like Perkins had more than a few of those. Jepsen was pretty good picking up the slack at the end of last year and I'm not worried about any regression. Let him take on the extra load.
  21. A little perspective here....... The first team to play baseball under modern rules were the New York Knickerbockers. The club was founded on September 23, 1845, as a social club for the upper middle classes of New York City, and was strictly amateur until it disbanded. On April 6, 1973--Opening Day--Ron Blomberg of the New York Yankees became the league's first ever designated hitter. In his first plate appearance, he was walked on a full count by the Boston Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant. I'm not really arguing one way or another. But I think it's not fair or honest to say that the DH has made the game better compared to the 128 years we went without it. It's different, like Astro-Turf. I grew up playing ball on grass fields and blacktop. Didn't really care. With batting helmets and DH's, sliders, "turf", steroids and sabermetrics, the game has somewhat passed me by. But not by much.
  22. The comment on Polanco "blocked by Brian Dozier, Polanco best chance to break into the bigs probably is in a different organization." is the thing about the Twins that has always concerned me. I'd rather hear if there are any plans by Twins management to move veterans while they still have some value and promote those prospects. And a pull-back in FA veteran pitcher signings [plus the a fore mentioned veteran trades] to make a little room for the young pitching prospects.
  23. I like Nunez. In limited playing time he has performed better than most would. Not an easy thing to do. Neither is having great, or even good defense is tough when you're rotating around the ballpark. I think a larger problem would be Arcia as a bench player. I don't recall an example of a power hitter being that successful coming off the bench. Now, if Arcia were to be a more consistent substitute in the outfield [sano] or DH [Park/Mauer] and get 300+ AB's, it would make much more sense to me.
  24. Like I said in your other view, 1 year + mutual option. I like to hedge my bets when it comes to promoting MiLB relief pitchers. Perkins health is another area of concern.
