I don't know about Sano and the off-season. The part I'm confused about is whether or not management ordered Sano to play RF in the winter leagues or not AND who called it off. That I don't understand. Distracted or disgruntled: At 22, I'd say too young to be disgruntled. He has a family that grew up in poverty. But it sounds like they did the best they could and Sano didn't sound disgruntled in the video. I will say, he's probably facing pressure from family like he's never had in his life. And from baseball, too.
"During their last eight days in Fort Myers, they went 8-0, receiving strong outing after strong outing as their starters stretched out to season-ready form." That's my thing: how the heck did they turn from a strong finish to SP to 0-7 in regular season play? Maybe it's over-rating prospects. Or the bullpen. Or starters. Or everyday players. The fallacy of being playoff contenders this year and the perception of having trade-able players of value doesn't help. At best, this is a team that is STILL in building mode. There are some pieces in place for future success, but even those have warts. Strap on that jock strap with Kevlar cup: it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
I'm still hopeful that the plan was to keep a couple 'place holders' until some of those bullpen prospects pan out. Seth, check this out: http://www.fangraphs.com/library/pitching/sd-md/
Not sure how a team that has a good Spring Training could start the season so poorly. Overrated? I don't care how old he is, Sano is a DH, only. Buxton was and is overrated. PA's are better, still a hacker. Bullpen is more bull than pen. I was hoping the plan for Fien was to keep the better RP prospects in the MiLB a little longer. Need wins out. Starting pitchers are middle relievers. Twins have been prepping D. Santana to take over CF. Send Buxton down. The Arcia fantasy should be over by now: Cut Arcia, keep Kepler. Bunch Escobar and Mauer together, on the off chance the only 2 guys hitting over .200 can generate a run. Order liquor by the case.
Well, if your best hitter is swinging away at a rate of 50% strikeouts and the rest of the offense [ and, sometimes the defense, too ] is cold, I'd take a chance on pinch running for Sano, too.
No Kepler. Volquez starting for KC Twins at Royals Kauffman Stadium - sun, 04/10/2016 2:15 PM ET 1. Dozier, B, 2B 2. Rosario, E, LF 3. Mauer, J, DH 4. Sano, M, RF 5. Park, B, 1B 6. Escobar, E, SS 7. Nunez, E, 3B 8. Murphy, J, C 9. Buxton, B, CF
Murphy is starting. About time. If Kepler shows he can play in the MLB, say goodbye to Arcia. Very sad to see D. Santana out. I thought he was making a difference.
