    I've searched all through my DirecTV guide and I can't find this game listed. Is it possible that it's not available here in Maine? I think I'll call and complain.

    I'm more concerned that he might drop over from a coronary than whether he hits a target weight. Obesity can be deadly. And for a professional athlete with both means and opportunity at his fingertips, there is no excuse for him not to be in playing shape whatever weight that is.

    The one thing I love about all the new sabermetric quantifiers is that now everyone gets to pick one the "proves" his position on a topic. To me, it's the argument equivalent of a participation medal. Everyone gets to be a winner. In ancient times (the 20th century), we all had to discuss a topic using ERA, WHIP, Batting Average, Home Runs, etc. It was a simpler time. P.S. I like the trade.

    Unless you have a financial stake in the team, they don't owe you any explanation. They made a business decision based on information we are not privy to whether you like it or not. I don't like it but that's immaterial to the front office.

    If I lived in the Twin Cities, I think I would be planning a May or June trip to Cedar Rapids to see Kirilloff and Lewis in action before they get pushed up to Fort Meyers.

    I will have to politely disagree with you. Where ever I've lived around this country, Dallas has been perceived (rightly or wrongly) as a high end city while Minneapolis is a neat place somewhere up north.

    When you have Texas big oil money involved, it's a big market. Heck, they could even afford to have George Bush involved as a owner and still be sucessful.

    Maybe you've never been to Texas, but Arlington is located only minutes from both Dallas and Forth Worth. The Metropolitan area population is over 7,000,000 which I would classify as a big market.

    The Twins missed out on Darvish: maybe 18 wins at $22M. What if they sign both Cobb and Lynn: maybe 28 wins at $26M???

    Two extra wins probably doesn't put the Twins in the playoffs so why spend money for nothing? It makes no sense to me.

    Am I understanding this coorectly that bringing in Darvish would get the Twins about two extra wins over Gibson? And pay him $150M to do that. If that is correct, then so no to Darvish.

    How can anyone feel bad for a player that turns down a contract worth in excess of $10M a year, let alone $25M a year. Poor starving little babies. Take the damn shorter length contract at a higher AAV and play for your next contract. If you've pocketed $50 million during that time, you will be able to survive. How much is too much? Apparently, no one has an answer to that. As a white collar professional who has now now retired, I earned less than $4M in my entire xcareer. And yet I can survive in retirement. I guess I should have sought out endorsements to supplement my income???

    I think you could find many economists who would disageree that there is no monetary gain from having professional sports teams. Tourism brings in revenues and tax dollars, provides jobs (not just at stadiums), and a qualtity of life that induces people to move to the area. When I litved in Austin Texas, the city (and state) gave major tax breaks to companies in an effort to get them to move to Austin. I never heard that there was an implied social contract with them in return for the millions of dollars given to them (and there was no interest in them from the public as there is with sports teams). If there is any(and playing sofrt of implied social contract, I think it s mostly on the public side and not the sports entity. It is the responsibility of the sports entity to remain financially viable in order to continue existing (and playing in the partially public-financed stadiums) rather than spend money wildly to satisfy a group of fans.

    But probably the closest thing to a "social" contract that exists, don't you think?

    It was just a short time back when many people were applauding the major contracts given out by the Twins for pitchers like Nolasco, Pelfrey, etc. And then they bemoaned the fact that those contracts prevented the Twins from pursuing other free agents a couple years later. And now history is repeating itself. If the front office has doubts about the value of Darvish, Arrietta, Cobb, and Lynn, then they should opt for a one-year guy with some chance of a rebound/turnaround season. Push the young arms already in the system to see if they are ready. There are five or six young arms mentioned in prospect reviews as having major league potential. See if any of those are the real thing. Throwing money at a problem isn't the answer if you don't have confidence in what you are getting. I saw a short video of a Twins fan complaining about the front office not offering Darvish whatever he wanted. The fan actually said that "all they are interested in is having a competitive team on the field and that the at the end of the year, the books are in the black." To me, that sounds like running a business properly.

    Maybe the Twins can put Lewis and Buxton in the outfield and use their glut of middle infielders as a five-man infield. That would be creative thinking.

    So to continue your 100% negative train of thought, you sign Darvish, Lynn, and Cobb,and commit a couple hundred million dollars, and they all fail. Is that better or worse? I think it's far worse.

    2018 is still a building year. Bring in a couple short-term contract starters for depth and then see what the Gonsalves, Romero, Thorpe, Little, Jorge quintet have to offer. They may be better than any big money, long-term FA that we can sign now. Use the extra cash now to sign the young guys to extensions so the window of opportunity stays open for years.

    I just looked closer at Romero's picture an saw the huge scar. And then I saw how contorted his right arm looks. I'm surprised there aren't more arm injuries with all that torque/pressure put on a joint. Of course, I just had shoulder replacement surgery a couple weeks ago (second one) and I may be a little sensitive right now.

    I had moved to Virginia a couple years before Puckett came to the Twins. I heard all these stories about a speedy center fielder that could hit, steal bases, and play great defense. When I finally got to see a Twins game on TV (and they were rare back then), I was very surprised to see this short, chunky guy in center field. I figured the Twins must be resting Puckett. But I watched the game anyway and discovered that the short, chunky guy was damn good - just not the physique I expected. And since I am also a short, chunky guy, Kirby Puckett instantly became my new Twins favorite (for the same reasons Harmon Killebrew had been previously).
