  1. That's a real negative - only good enough to be a #3 starter. I'll take it. Put him in the rotation after Santana and Berrios. Being only a #3 starter puts him ahead of Gibson and Mejia.
  2. Here is an alternative scenario. If I were Molitor, I would take this opportunity to call Bud Grant and say: "You want to spend next summer fishing with me?" I have plenty of money so that isn't an issue. I just took a team of players that that was comprised mostly of guys no one last April would have traded for and led them into the playoffs. I am constantly disparaged by fans for being a poor manager. I think I will just raise a figurative middle finger to everyone and ride off into the sunset. I am too much of a Minnesotan to actually raise a middle finger but the thought is there. However, if the front office comes to me and begs me to stay (and offers me a nice extension), then I might return because I do love the game.
  3. What surprises me is that the Twins now have (after a trade) a pitcher who was 20-1 in the high minors and no one even talks about him as a prospect. Just therecord alone should merit discussion.
  4. Check out a blog I posted a couple weeks back called "A Look Back". I found an article posted at the beginning of the season in which many people posted their quesses at the Twins total wins for the year. Only one predicted that total to exceed 80.
  5. This reminds of when I used to work..... I was in hiring/firing level positions and we were always told to only give out employment dates to anyone asking about a former employee. All other questions had to be transferred to HR for legal reasons.
  6. Rooker has an ETA of July 2017 and Gonsalvez June 2016? I think I missed those debuts.
  7. My question is not about DM's non-renewal but about minor leagues and the importance of analytics.
  8. I have a question that is partially related to this thread so if it needs to be moved, please do so. After reading the entire length of this topic, I find myself in a little bit of a quandry. It "appears" that the non-renewal of the contract may have been partially because DM did not believe in analytics which is the preference of the front office. My question is: how much emphasis should even be placed on analytics in the low minors when the goal at that level should be to develop skills of young men. I might not have a strong grasp on what is included in "analytics", but I would rather have a 20-year old shortstop learning the proper way to field a ground ball and start a double play than him knowing the tendency of the #8 batter to hit to the opposite field with two strikes and less than two outs. And, as so often pointed out by TD regulars, I may be completely out of touch with the 21st century world of baseball.
  9. I'm now retired. But during my illustrious working career, I was fired, laid off, caught in a reorganization, etc. more times than Dennis Rodman has tattoes. And each time, I received the news from my immediate supervisor. I never had the CEO come down from his penthouse office to deliver the bad news. That ain't their job. Why some people think it should be any different in baseball is beyond me. It's just another business.
  10. I really enjoy comments such as "sign the best FA or two". That makes it sound like the Mall of America and White Castle are on par with Hollywood or Broadway. It takes more than money to attract the best and the lure of being a Flatlander isn't appealing to most rich young men. I hope the Twins can entice a quality pitcher to sign but I'm not holding my breath. IMHO, trading for pitching may be the best option. But that also has its downside. You should trade from surplus, but where do the Twins have a surplus? Middle infielders three years from the majors? Pitchers a year or two from the majors? Some posters have mentioned that there isn't much milb non-pitching depth. It seems foolish to trade what little there is. So you're left with trading pitching for pitching. If the Twins' minor league pitchers are valuable enough that other teams are willing to trade for them, maybe they should just keep them and jettison those on the current team that they don't want.
  11. How many 36-year old near Hall of Fame pitchers are going to be free agents this winter? And how many are from Minnesota and willing to come "home" for a final hurrah? Let's sign all of them.
  12. How often does a team have a minor league pitcher with an overall record of 20-1 that doesn't even get honorable mention?

    Review

I looked through the article and found that I didn't make a prediction. And it's a little late now. I think I was optomistically thinking upper 70s but I'm old and can't remember that far back.

    Review

I went back to a January 18, 2017 blog by Brandon Warne in which he predicted the Twins would win 80 games and asked readers to comment and make their own predictions. The blog was eight pages long but by page five, the predictions stopped and the criticisms of the team began. Most of the negative comments were about how horrible the Twins defense would by in 2017, especially at third base with Miguel Sano~. Here is a summary of the predictions that I found: Brandon Warne: 80 Wsnydes: 70-75 PseudoSABR: 70s Tom Froemming: high 60s Mazeville: 80+ Jimmer: low 70s Diehardtwinsfan: 80 at best Halsey Hall: 75-80 Jandersh: 70 Einstein1: less than 70 Han Joelo: 75 Platoon: 73-75 wiesbadenDAN: 75 beckmt: 75-80 nytwinsfan: 75 Doomtints: 70 DocBauer: 70-75 Brock Beauchamp: they will spend the entire year under .500 Bk432: 75 Oldgoat_MN: 70-75 Only two people (10%) predicted at least 80 wins and only three others (15%) said 80 was an outside possibility if all the stars aligned. Simple math tells us that 75% of Twins Daily posters on this blog blew it.
  15. In all the above posts about our pitching possibilities for 2018, no one has mentioned the current pitcher who has been (arguably) the Twins' best over the last month. Is there ageism running rampant among TD posters? I think that Colon has earned at least an invitation to spring training if not a one-year contract. I have no idea how he's doing it, but he keeps giving the Twins opportunities to win games.
  16. I was amazed to read that Niko Goodrum had 11 steals in today's game. Must be some sort f record, right?
  17. Who would have thought that Gibson and Colon would be the two pitchers leading the Twins towards a playoff game?
  18. Another save last night. He's 5-1 with 23 saves in 23 chances this year. I would say that Hicks for Moya is a great trade.
  19. Garver and Curtiss are the two that I would most like to see. Obviously, with roster expansion, more will be brought up: Granite, Vargas, Palka, and maybe Gonsalves and Park.
  20. Did Molitor actually give Boshers permission to give up hits and runs? I guess I missed that. I understand that you might not like Molitor as a manager but you can't say "Molitor allowed him to allow". Just the grammar alone is enough to make me cringe.
  21. Some commenters seem to think that first base is a place to hide your worst defensive player. That's what the DH is. As Maurer has shown often this year (and Vic Power for those of you with good memories), a good-fielding first baseman makes the entire infield a better defensive unit. Leave Sano at third, where he is competent, and find a good fielding, offensive first baseman to replace Maurer in the future.
  22. How do think I felt when the Twins drafted Joe Maurer in 2001 and I realized I played hockey in high school with his Grand Uncle. I went to bed for about a week.
  23. Then how about promoting him to see if he can handle it? But the point of my comment was about the fixation on strikeouts, not Bleeker.
  24. By Twins Daily commenter standards, Clark Beeker isn't any good. Sure he has a no-runs streak of 32.2 innings and leads his league in ERA, but he didn't have a single strikeout yesterday. Obviously, he isn't anything more than a roster filler in the low minors. And yes, I'm being sarcastic. The love affair with strikeouts that some commenters have is silly. Strikeouts may be sexy, but I'll take a low ERA any day. (Plus, at my age, my doctor tells me that sexy is not good for my heart.)
