Twins (Abel) vs Red Sox (Gray): 4/14/26, 6:40 pm CDT
karcherd replied to C-Gangster's topic in Archived Game Threads
Royce is our third baseman if he is healthy. He did improve the second half of last season and has an OPS of over .800 this year. I don't get his comments sometimes but the hate on him is overblown to some degree IMHO. -
Twins 13, Red Sox 6: This Team is Hot

You might want to fact check Google, last year he was healthy from July 1st to the end of September. I believe that would be more than 35 games. -

2 for 11 in his last 4 games, yes one hit was a home run but not sure that should guarantee a spot in the lineup. -

Looks like the storm is staying south, we should be able to get the game in. -
Twins 8, Blue Jays 2: G4 Ignites a Twins Onslaught
karcherd replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Again two good games should not earn you the job. This is 25 Clemens all over, he add a good three week stretch and they are now making him an every day player leading off. You need to put players in a position to succeed and I don't believe based on history Gray will succeed as an every day player.- 92 replies

Twins 8, Blue Jays 2: G4 Ignites a Twins Onslaught

Oh sure, he has had two good games and now let's anoint him our every day third baseman. He has done what a bench player should do, he has contributed. But he is 30 years old with 130 AB's in the majors. Let's stop with trying to turn every pumpkin into Cinderella. We are going to win more games with Lewis, he has been playing better since last August and I will take his upside over Gray's. We need to know if Lewis will be part of the next wave of core players. We know Gray will not be.- 92 replies

What is with the insistence to make Clemens a regular, he is a bench piece and that is how he is most effective. What does Martin have to do to get regular playing time. The only reason he has gotten regular time is because of all the lefties we have faced. I get this is a get away lineup, but get a leadoff hitter in there and not Clemens.

A couple of thoughts on the replacements. If Culpepper is not going to brought up, Lee needs to be at SS. Until you are ready to move on from him as your everyday SS, you can't move him around. It is not that difficult to play Martin, Larnach, and Bell in the lineup against RH's. It just means that Clemens is on the bench where he should be and Bell plays first. No he is not optimal there but that was why he was signed and Clemens is an upgrade defensively but not by that much.

I think Falvey had a larger role than we realize in determining the pitch counts and player usage. We were churning thru waivef wire pickups for the middle innings last year, we weren't getting to the better arms until later in the game. The only difference this year is we don't have the back end arms like last year.

Martin is not platooning with Larnach though, it is actually Clemens that has been keeping on the bench. Because of their insistence on playing Clemens every day against RH pitching, that is what is keeping Martin on the bench. They should DH Larnach, play Martin in LF and Bell at 1B. There is no need for a platoon.

It was great to see them sweep the Tigers. There appears to be an organizational shift, whether it is from Zoll or Shelton, I am glad that this twice thru the order and removed is no longer in play for the pitchers. There is no way last year Abel would have been out there in the fifth inning much less the sixth. The pitchers need to learn to work their way thru the lineup and to get out of trouble. This bullpen is not going to hold up without reinforcements and it is good to get innings from the starters.

Jack of all trades, master of none. That is what this model produces more times than not. Just because a player can play a position doesn't mean they are proficient at it. Castro could move around the field but was average defensively at most positions and was stretched to play some over a longer period of time. Let a player get comfortable and master one position. Moving them around accomplishes very little. It was interesting to hear the talk about Martin in that he looks improved in the outfield and is taking better routes on the ball. This a perfect example of letting a player learn a position and keeping him there. Now if you want to make a move because someone comes in and takes over a position and a player needs to learn a new position. That is a different story, give them reps in the offseason and spring training to get comfortable and work with them to master the position.

And who plays short, Lewis isn't going anywhere this year, he is your third baseman.

I seem to recall Falvey saying that Bell was signed to be the primary first baseman. If that is correct then I am not sure Zoll was on board with the signing of if he was, for the same reasons. That said I think Zoll is a placeholder in the GM role and is not much different than Falvey.

For everyone who is wondering where Roden or ERod would play if called up. There is a very easy solution, left field. They obviously are not going to play Martin there against RH pitching, so one of those two could play there. Then Larnach slides to DH and Clemens moves to the bench where he belongs. Again play your best nine players and I will take the upside of Roden or ERod over Clemens any day.

For those who keep saying Buxton should be traded, most of you know he can't be traded without his permission. Why keep banging this drum. He has to realistically know the odds of this team winning and at least his public comments indicate he wants to be here. And to some degree I believe him, he does seem like the type of person that does want to play on one team and does value loyalty. We already have prospects that we could call up, but can this field staff develop them better than the previous staff. To keep trading for more prospects is not going to work if you won't play and develop them.

Gray did what you want your bench players to do, he helped to contribute to a win with a nice hit. But he is still what he is, a journeyman utility infielder. You need your bench guys to contribute when they come in but that doesn't mean that success will translate when put in an every day role. They need to give Lee a shot longer than 7 games or else he shouldn't have started the season as the starting SS. If they move on, it needs to be to Culpepper, not a journeyman. Clemens is a great example of some success doesn't translate to an every day role even though they are trying hard to make him into a regular. Wallner needs to play, if by the end of May he doesn't start to produce then it may be time to move on. Sending him down at this point, means he has no future with the team and it is way too early to consider. They did this in 24 with him after only 25 ab's, every player can have struggles over a 25 ab stretch, you need to have some patience.
