Royce Lewis Needs to Have an Open Mind
karcherd replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I am not sure their short term plan worked well, maybe they need to stop trying to fix him and let him work on his swing mechanics that were working in spring training. -
Twins (Ryan) vs White Sox (Burke): 5/26/26, 6:40 pm CDT
karcherd replied to C-Gangster's topic in Archived Game Threads
Hasn't Shelton been saying for over a a week that Buxton is close to returning. I am not sure DH only is considered returning. It does keep Bell out of the lineup but if he can't play the field, I would rather get a fresh bat up here. He has not done well in the past DH'ing only. -

I don't recall seeing any comments about him sticking with what worked last year. But if he did, why did he go to a hitting coach if he was comfortable with last year's results. -

He also paused his work with his hitting coach apparently the Twins again wanted a different approach. He actually did look better in spring training, so what happened did the Twins change his swing to something he wasn't comfortable with. He hinted at that in his comments, let him do what he is comfortable and tweak that approach rather than change it. -
The first home run hit was on his fifth pitch of the game. You can't blame that on pitch selection. Even in the second inning, Matthews like any pitcher was still figuring out what was working and what wasn't. The last four innings he gave up no runs and we got only one run for him in the first inning. Picking on his pitch selection seems a little unrealistic when you look at his whole game.

Royce Lewis Needs to Have an Open Mind
karcherd replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I think you are giving Gray more credit than deserved. He had a good start in the first half of April and has already fallen back to earth. His OPS is less than last year in the same number of AB's. And he has made some plays on defense, his defensive ability does not look overwhelmingly superior to others. I am fine with riding with Kriedler who is hitting currently. But if and when he turns into a pumpkin, I hope they don't keep running him out there. -

But yet in the offseason after that year, he did work on defense on 2B. That part seems to be neglected. So maybe it was the timing of trying to make the move. -
Not every player comes up a power hitter. Sometimes they need to learn to hit in the major leagues and the power will come with time. Puckett was one of numerous examples of this, he didn't start hitting home runs until his third year. It is easier to score runs via the home run but you can't force every player to be a home run hitter. As others have said right now Luke is a gap to gap hitter and there is where I would like to see more from him.. I think he could be a 20 home run hitter with time but it doesn't have to be right now. He can provide value without hitting multiple home runs.

I think we are writing off Lewis too soon. I know his performance has been poor last year and since his return from the IL. But he was looking better before the injury. His swing looks like the early season swing. Are there too many voices in his ear, if so, let him play. This is similar to Buxton early in his career. I believe Lewis still has talent and he is the type of player you want to build around both on and off the field. And Shelton seems to feel this way as well, Lewis was the first player he went to see in person after becoming manager and letting him know his importance to the organization. After 50 games, you are going to change that viewpoint. That seems shortsighted either on the visit or on giving up on him. There does feel like there is a disconnect between Royce and the organization and i am bummed about that. I want to see him successful and I want to see him do it here. But I do believe he can still have a very productive career. -

How many AB's do you want to give away in one game. Gray and Kreidler are not going to consistently give you good AB's. Arcia will come back to earth but at least he has a track record of being competent. Bell and Caratini are doing nothing at the plate. You would have a whole infield contributing next to nothing at the plate. Yes you need defense but not at the complete expense of the offense. -
I am not sure why you are saying he was benched this weekend. He was hit by a pitch on Friday and due to swelling was not available on Saturday and could have been used yesterday. Apparently the swelling on his forearm was still visible yesterday. He has raised his OPS by over .80 points in May and is 7 for 23 with a HR in his six games.
-
I wonder if they sat Buxton yesterday because of the conditions. If his hip is flaring up, I am sure they didn't want him sliding around on a wet playing surface. They mentioned yesterday on the broadcast that Keaschall's arm still showed visible swelling. But they thought he was available if needed yesterday.

Kriedler has started four games at SS, while he looks better at SS, his defense is above average but not elite. He has not earned the starting job based on this SSS, otherwise why was he not the starting shortstop coming out of spring training. He has done the job when in there, but there is a long way to go to show it can be done on a consistent basis over the course of the season. Keaschall has not played that many games at 2B, we need to have some patience with him before saying he can't play 2B.

I have said this before, he has shown a willingness to move positions. He played CF, he moved to 3B, when before they got Correa he was looking to be the shortstop. I think it is based on timing of the move, do it in the offseason or send him to Ft. Meyers for a mini spring training to get him comfortable. At some point you have to pick a position for him, he has been putting in the work at 3B, while he was not a plus defender, I am not as down as others on his defense. But you have to give him time and he really hasn't been given that. He was not unwilling to move to 2B, his concern was not making a play because he was new to the position and costing his team during a pennant race.- 38 replies

Clemens is the only position player of this group that should have consideration for next year. But only as a bench player, playing a couple of times a week or when there are injuries. Kreidler is not going to all of sudden turn into Castro or Escobar just because some want it to happen. He couldn't even beat out Gray coming out of spring training. I will enjoy his success when it happens but expectations are being kept low.

According to MILB his home runs were measured at 405 and 406 feet. I know many want to trash Lewis on here, but at least be fair when you do it.

I am not against multi-inning relief appearances. It is the plan they have with Rojas as stated by Maki. They are committed to a four day schedule with 45-60 pitches You can't come into the game with a preordained plan. It almost blew up on them in the 7th inning yesterday, similar to what they did with Abel in the opening series. You can't just keep a guy out there in the 7th inning or later just because you want them to get work based on a plan. You have to manage based on the game situation. If they want to keep him stretched out then send him to St. Paul. They currently have no starters there because every pitcher down there is on the bulk plan pitching no more than 4 innings per outing. My issue is this bulk pitching plan, it needs to be phased out in AAA and the major leagues at a minimum.

So is he a starter or reliever. This plan works better in St. Paul. one more base runner in the 7th, they would have had to consider bringing in another pitcher. They have to get away from this bulk pitching nonsense.

Is Kreidler or Arcia at SS vs. 3B going to add an appreciable number of additional wins. IMHO that will add up to one or maybe two wins over the course of a season and have no impact for 2027. So for that you are moving someone who hasn't really played that poorly to warrant to be moved. Hopefully he is on board with the move, but I am not sure it sends the right message.

It doesn't look he had a natural position, he played SS and the OF mostly other than 2B in the minors and college.

Regarding Keaschall's fielding, there are moments he has looked better. It does look like going to his right he still struggles. But he has less than a full season worth of games between the minors and major leagues at 2B. I think he has the athleticism that he can become at least serviceable there. Not everyone comes up a finished product. Koskie was brutal at 3B and did improve with time. I think a little patience is warranted as long he starts to hit better.
