  1. The 10/5 thing is also added in here. The right decision is blatantly obvious, but report after report is that the Twins aren't willing to pay the salary for this season . . . .
  2. Batting .270 with 15-20 homers and a .750 OPS is not good for a first baseman. Especially not at 6+ million bucks. It is astounding that people want mediocrity back and multi-year deals no less!!!! If I knew that both Willingham and Doumit would be traded, I would consider resigning Justin to a one-year deal for more money. There is going to be a hole in the roster if those two are gone. I also wouldn't mind all three gone. BUT STILL . . . they can sign Morneau in the offseason. Trade him now by PAYING THE SALARY for the rest of the season. How is this a difficult decision, at all, by this front office?
  3. Again, the major hurdle to a trade is the fact that the Twins, foolishly, are not going to eat the contract.
  4. Parmelee and Colabello have not gotten adequate chances to just take over for Justin, and a platoon of those two might be quite useful. Defensively, there is going to be a drop off, but it isn't clear to me that such a platoon won't do better than a .752 OPS in 500+ plate appearances next year. But if the Twins do want him next year, for whatever reason, than they clearly should just eat the salary and trade him for somebody now. The Yankees, and by WC extension, the Orioles are interested. Not to mention the Pirates. I don't know how the Twins, who threw money at Blackburn and Correia for absolutely no reason, won't just pay the $3 million owed to Morneau to get some kind of return. The verdict on the future of Twins pitching is still very much out, so they should be doing something. They already robbed a team of quality for the worst hitter in baseball.
  5. Yankees are back in, so hopefully a deal finally gets made.
  6. I would be content with Mauer catching 2012's number of games for the next two seasons.
  7. It is completely asinine that they don't want to just eat the rest of Morneau's salary for the rest of the season. They better plan on bringing him back then, instead of doing nothing and getting nothing. A September callup is going to mean a lot more for someone like Hendriks than Sano right now.
  8. Uh, yeah. There is something drastically wrong, flat-out, straight up wrong. Basically every pitcher worth anything in the system has been injured in the past two seasons or is injured right now. And when the few that are actually qualified to get to the big leagues do they just fail. Something like this has to be systemic.
  9. Williams is struggling to do much with the ball right now in the FSL. It is going to take a full season there to adjust, I think.
  10. Herrmann's .694 OPS is about what I would imagine in his first bit of extended time in the majors. He is in a slump with a decrease in playing time (it happens) because Ryan Doumit was not traded for some A- pitcher and still clogs the roster with "versatile" poor defense everywhere and an OPS below .700.
  11. Mejia should be coming off the 7-day DL soon. His numbers dropped before the injury. Jumping to A+ and producing a .708 OPS while playing good defense at short is quite the contribution for the year so far.
  12. I really believe that this is the only post in this whole discussion that needs to be read. Nice job!
  13. Wilkin Ramirez and Clete Thomas on this roster is really atrocious.
  14. I would be interested in trading exactly zero of the Twins top 10 prospects. Maybe some of the pitchers in the next 10 or so (Baxendale, Duffey etc.), but those guys are only throw-ins with Morneau (sigh . . . ) or in the offseason with Willingham or Doumit. So instead, the Twins need to buy a pitcher. Not two overpriced replacement-level (or worse) pitchers. I would settle for one good top 60 starter in baseball for 2014.
  15. The Twins should not have spent the money they did on the pitching they did in the last offseason. Why advocate doing that again? First, resigning Pelfrey is a rather disgusting idea. I cannot fathom why they would do that. Correia isn't attractive to anyone as a trade candidate, obviously, so the Twins are stuck with that unless they are willing to eat half his salary or something. I would like to first say that I am not *fine* with the following rotation to start 2014, but I am better with it than with signing more overpriced replacement or worse pitchers: Gibson Deduno Diamond Worley Hendriks Where's Albers? Well, I can't really imagine him sticking around as a good starting pitcher for much longer. Teams *will* catch on. I still view him as a good replacement for Swarzak who will be a bit more expensive next year (so he is either traded or moved to MR). Trevor May (more recent issues aside) is the next option and Meyer hopefully follows. And maybe Wimmers comes roaring back or something.
  16. Pittsburgh should really be the target. They could use him right now.
  17. Very good article. Santana definitely needs more time refining his defense at short. Another year split between AA and AAA should let him work out those offensive kinks.
  18. In the Dodger organization, who knows!? I have to think that most GMs would not give that up for Butera so the bar is probably lower. But, yeah, I would have maybe expected this caliber of player back for Morneau or maybe Doumit. When I looked for pitchers to acquire for those two, most were not as good as Sulbaran.
  19. I think he ends up being good in the long relief role.
  20. This is a very good picture of the possibilities. I think a September call and yet starting at AAA next season might be the best route. I don't think Plouffe would get buried in such a scenario, especially if Morneau ends up being claimed and traded. There's a DH spot for Sano and Plouffe, and Plouffe can get some work in at 1B, LF, and/or RF. Looking at 2014, if Morneau and Willingham are gone, Plouffe could be looking at a move somewhere anyway.
  21. That is a great return. Usually the PTBNL could be someone who either strikes out that many guys AND walks a ton of guys or someone who doesn't throw hard and gets smacked around a bit, but is still solid in the lower levels.
  22. I went out on a limb in my fantasy league (keeper) and drafted Stanton with the number 2 pick overall. The limb broke and Stanton is dead to me. This kind of bizarre speculation makes me wonder about how difficult it is to become such a sportswriter (sports reporter is more difficult). The Twins might consider such a deal in about two years when some of the prospects are established, the system is still strong, and they are one player away. Not now, so this is silly.
  23. And I was both frustrated and bored with all of the discussions going on around here in the past 24+ hours, so I decided to start a conversation instead of partaking . . .
  24. It's mid-August and this is the Twins, so let's think about October. That is, let's think about the Arizona Fall League. The Twins will send six or seven players, mostly from AA and AAA to play in this hitter-heavy month-long league. There are certain reasons why players may be selected for this league. For starting pitchers who need more innings, the AFL is a nice place to get some more work in. For starters and relievers who are fast risers (and in A+ or AA), this is a good place to provide a bigger test. Then there are position players who are doing very well and you want to see if it continues beyond a full season. And there are, perhaps finally, some players and pitchers who have been around a bit and need a test really to see if the team should continue to be serious about them in 2014 and forward. Given these parameters, I think the two names that jump out the most are Alex Meyer and Josmil Pinto. Meyer is going to need innings and Pinto is now played 1 2/3 seasons across three levels of the minors. It will be good to get him some more at bats to see if opening day 2014 is a possibility for him. There's Meyer and Pinto, but who are other players (4-5) who you think might be included. I have some ideas (Beresford, Dean, Ortiz) but there also seems like there are plenty of potential candidates.
  25. AFL for Meyer in order to build up some more innings. I bet they just start him at AAA and wait and see next year.
