  1. I just disagree. Willingham provides the opportunity to get something back and he is blocking Arcia, essentially. His contract is enticing for other teams and we are seeing his regression as we speak. Next year might not be pretty for him. Best to try to cut ties now.
  2. Both should be up, pronto. Gibson should get some MLB work in and Albers should get a look so that he can be viewed as the Swarzak successor (a left-handed long reliever with a righty prominent rotation makes sense, and he can also be a situational LOOGY in the 6th or 7th innings when not getting much work).
  3. I am blogging about trade possibilities right now and hope to have it done at some point today. This is good news. I would trade Morneau, Willingham, Doumit, and maybe Plouffe. Always the potential re-signing of Morneau after the season.
  4. By the way, if the Twins hadn't made the bonehead decision to sign Blackburn to that terrible, useless contract, where would Slowey be today? That contract pushed Gardy to favor him and then name him a starter instead of the more-deserving Slowey. I want Slowey to do well this year, just for Dick and Bert.
  5. Thanks . Must have been a subconscious thing, hoping for things to be one year ahead of where they are now.
  6. Twins rotation to start 2013: Gibson May Diamond Worley Correia Hendriks Meyer
  7. Dozier seems to only be able to play second base at a level that merits his being on the field at all. Excellent defense can make up for sub-.700 OPS. But he might only amount to an average defensive player at SS. As far as Michael is concerned, he is unfortunately putting up very similar numbers at Fort Myers in 2013 as he did in 2012. Hopefully he plays well enough the rest of the season to earn a start at NB next year. Else . . . he is trouble.
  8. I'm much happier with them waiting until the short seasons are basically starting and there is reason to move people around then to risk any further setback.
  9. They might be able to get Cingrani for Perkins and Goodrum or certainly Polanco. I would not do that though.
  10. How on earth would it not be beneficial for everyone for Gibson to pitch this year with the Twins? It probably would even be beneficial for Pelfrey and Diamond if they got some DL time to get it together. And Albers would be up in part to see if he can deal with big-league pitching and next year take over for Swarzak since he'll be 1/2 or less the cost and also could provide for situational appearances in the 6th inning (like when Kevin Correia starts faltering every game in the 6th inning next year and Prince comes to the plate).
  11. Santana/Beresford, Rosario, and Beresford/Santana will occupy these three positions and Carroll will be gone. None of those other three will stick unless Dozier starts hitting. Escobar returned to form pretty quickly after the hot start and Florimon will end up around .600 OPS. Beresford is a better Escobar, though he may have to start at short if Santana isn't sticking there defensively. Offensive production at SS starting mid-2014 and especially in 2015 and 2016 isn't going to matter much.
  12. What I still don't understand is how the Twins thought Pelfrey was actually ready to go at the beginning of the season. I remember being shocked that reports were good in March. Of course being able to pitch is not the same as being strong enough to pitch for over 5 innings. We are finally now seeing it work out a bit better. Too bad they didn't pitch someone else in April and May.
  13. Cingrani would take another prospect with Perkins. Anyway, Perkins is making too much money to go somewhere to be a setup man, especially one same-handed as the actual closer.
  14. I don't think the $7 million owed to Willingham is that much to take on, but I don't know how much they have coming off the books.
  15. It would be one thing if they were jerking around a guy with "attitude" problems, but there is no way to come close to making up such a thing about Gibson. But he could certainly develop one if he watches Twins games and sees these guys get hammered the third time through the lineup all the time. I have a hard time believing that there isn't still something wrong with Diamond. Maybe another DL stint is in order. And then Pelfrey. Both Gibson and Albers can be up. Then Gibson will hit his innings limit and one of them can return. With Pelfrey, I know he seems to be improving, but I wouldn't mind seeing him pitch 7-8 inning games at AAA to see if it is a pitch count thing or if major leaguers just start to smack him around after they see him the third time in a game.
  16. Leaving Carroll aside (value only for NL team in search of utility player), look at LF, 1B, C, 3B, and DH: There is one team who has four sub-.700 OPS at these positions and the fifth is .709 (DH). Guess who it is? The New York Yankees. Their third base situation is a mess, catching and LF not much better. They are injured all over and have Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay holding it all together right now. As far as the kind of player in return, I am not talking top 100 or even 200 prospect overall. I may blog about "What is a 'top prospect'?" later. I will also have to check on where Hernandez and Escobar ranked for the White Sox going into 2012.
  17. The Phillies, Rockies, Blue Jays, Padres, Dodgers, Pirates, and Yankees all have sub .700 OPS at third base this year. The Pirates (.642) and Yankees (.615 and with question marks all over regarding A-Rod, Youk, and rookies) are two lowest. I would ask them about Plouffe.
  18. Danny Lehmann and Drew Butera have value in the system as well. Hopefully Turner proves to be better than those two, but I doubt by much. College baseball at the top level is akin to low-A ball, so I have little doubt that he won't end up in CR at the end of its season. He is one of the players that has really delayed my updated prospect list.
  19. For the record, I would prefer to have Wil Myers for the next 6 years than James Shields. The Royals are just so, so sad. Anyway, this thread is about a million different things. First, I hope that Willingham is being straight with the Twins about his injury/injuries. I think I would just like a 15-day DL stint right now, get it taken care of in June, and let him play again full-time in July in order to hopefully encourage some teams with players waiting to turn into pumpkins (looking at you N.Y. Yankees) to offer something for him. Then Parm can play. Now, here is the issue. I am not sure about his defense . . . at first base. He certainly isn't built like a first baseman. And offensively . . . I have big doubts that he is ever going to produce like a top 1/2 first baseman. His peak may be Lyle Overbay, who is a fine player and is now one of those players pushed into action by the Yankees (Wells, Overbay, Hafner . . . what the hell?), but there is a limitation there.
  20. In his 2012 Beloit season, J.D. Williams drew 39 walks in 407 plate appearances. He struck out 115 times. In 2013, Williams has reached 39 walks in 236 plate appearances. He has struck out just 50 times. His ISO numbers have climbed by .110 in his repeat season.
  21. Herrmann ended his brief stint with the Twins with a 1.303 OPS in 16 PA. Drastically different result than similar time in his first call-up last September. Trevor Plouffe needed to come back, so Herrmann was sent down. He is 2-for-5 with a double and 2 rbi since returning to Rochester.
  22. I think Morales will be fine soon there. I can see it being a struggle for another few weeks, but he should be fine.
  23. Burton and Duensing (though the latter has to get better over the next 6 weeks) could be intriguing for some teams (Duensing to the Reds, maybe). So let's list 'em: Morneau, Willingham, Doumit, Carroll, Plouffe, Burton, Duensing, and Correia. That's eight guys that could be traded, with varying degrees of both should and will. I guess injuries and suspensions could work to factor in here in the Twins favor (Yankees and Rangers come to mind).
  24. Looks like they tried to pitch around Sano and Pinto (5 walks combined) to get to Nate Hanson. Mistake . . . . Good for Stuifbergen. Great to see him with that many strikeouts.
  25. I desperately want Correia to go ape through July so they can trade him.
