Bringing Escobar would be great and all, but does he want to come back? And is coming back to the Twins what’s best for him long term?? At this point I’m not even sure if we’d be able to get him back if wanted, given Esco’s versatility/strong bat, all of which are much more important in the NL than AL. Galvis or Harrison are much more realistic options.

Going into offseason with a “finish the job” mentality while we’re still in this purgatory, that’s between “rebuilding” and “contention,” in my opinion is very counterproductive. Especially when taking extensions for Berrios and Rosario into consideration. Now this doesn’t mean I’m afraid of slightly ‘overpaying’ for any of Cruz, Ramos, plus Ottavino, because I’m not, my problem is with ‘overspending.’ Which is why our FO needs make trades as well. And while guys like Starlin Castro, Maikel Franco, J.P. Crawford, and Ketel Marte come to mind, I honestly would be very content with just Cruz and Ramos, not only because of the impact they make on the field and the payroll, but the impact they have in the clubhouse. Just look the all the teams they’ve been on, you can tell by just watching the game, their interviews, and their interactions with teammates that they really set the tone in the clubhouse. And with prospects like Rooker, Gordon, Kirilloff, and Lewis coming up soon, creating a winning environment is very important, in my opinion more important than “finishing the job,” when in actuality; we’ve only begun. And because I understand that the FO may not have the same approach, I’m now sorta warming up to the idea of signing more FA, particularly Galvis, Escobar, Murphy, and Harrison.
-
The ‘Mendoza Line’ comment was more of an exaggeration, but even if that was the case, I could live with that just as long as Rooker’s SLG% is above .400 and Gordon’s OBP is above .300. Also, I think it’s important to understand that most rookies aren’t prepared for the majors anyways, despite all the AAA seasoning in the world; So why not let both Rooker and Gordon take their licks and make adjustments early in the year.

Well, considering the roster decisions the FO has made so far, it’s actually not that crazy if you think about it... Also, I wouldn’t see as inconsistent (even though it is), I’d see it as attempt in maintaining a ‘safe’ balance between a “rebuild” and “contention.” Where a team can in rebuild mode, yet still able to bring in impact players without crippling the team’s payroll. And while I could be wrong, I really doubt that both Gordon and Rooker would hit below the Mendoza Line, which is why I think they should be promoted, because they could very easily surprise us like Stewart, Cave, and Astudillo have. Add Cruz, Ramos, and the rest of the core to mix, and the Twins could very easily surprise baseball (again) like the young & talented Braves did, by winning the division.
-
Because the pitching staff, and pitchers in general, are always unpredictable, I typically find it much easier to project the starting lineup and our bench instead. Although I think it’s pretty obvious that when it comes to ‘absolutes,’ the Twins FO ‘absolutely’ need to bring in a relief ace and other bullpen arms. Other than that, here’s what I hope our opening day roster looks like: CF- Byron Buxton SS- Jorge Polanco LF- Eddie Rosario DH- Nelson Cruz 3rd- Miguel Sano C- Wilson Ramos 1st- Brent Rooker 2nd- Nick Gordon RF- Max Kepler Bench: Ehire Adrianza/Josh Harrison Lamonte Wade/Jake Cave/Tyler Austin Mitch Garver/ Willians Astudillo

2019: The Nature, Organization, Augmentation of the Rotation

A good first step would be to sign Adam Ottavino, rather than any of Kimbrel/Familia/Miller, who’ll cost more for the same (if not better) production. -
2019: The Nature, Organization, Augmentation of the Rotation
ChrisKnutson replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I agree, despite the nice cushion of rotation depth, I still feel the FO is gonna be on the lookout for an innings eaters who can be capable of more. Of course this could mean bringing Santana back, but it also could mean signing either Derek Holland or Gio Gonzalez. -
Although, in order to actually make deal, I gotta imagine that any of Cave, Vasquez, Gonsalves, Thorpe, Wade, etc are gonna have to be on the table.

Not sure if this season was due to the spacious AT&T Park, or him just making adjustments. Either way, a lefty duo of Watson/Rogers (maybe Moya??) in the pen would be very strong on paper. Which is why I wouldn’t lose sleep over giving some like Jake Cave for him.

Alright then, but instead of signing a middle infielder, I’d much rather see the Twins trade for one; Starlin Castro, Aledmys Diaz, Ketel Marte, etc.

As long as Gordon/Adrianza can field their position we won’t need to worry about being burned by that decision, especially if we sign big bats like Cruz, Murphy (as a 1st baseman), and Ramos. Also, we can always sign Eric Sogard, or someone like that, to a minor league deal.

That’s a valid point, and I understand it, but how much of a difference do you really think that’d make?? And let’s say Gordon actually does really well in spring training, then what? Would you still bury him behind a FA (or two), Adrianza, maybe even Lewis? C’mon, at least give Gordon a fair shot, he’s still a 1st rounder, who’s most recent success was as recent as this year in Chattanooga. Besides, the money you all want spent on either Iglesias, Murphy, Galvis, etc could actually be better utilized in going after big league bats like Nelson Cruz and Wilson Ramos.

Here’s a thought; Instead of going out an signing a FA SS in the offseason, why not give Gordon a shot (deserved or not) and have him Adrianza share time at SS to start the season.

Look at Watson’s splits, he’s no closer, but he ain’t no LOOGY. And given that San Francisco might be looking to into shedding payroll this offseason, I think the Twins might have a shot at Watson. Although it’d probably take both Vasquez and Cave to aquire 2yrs of control over Watson for $7M.

Sign Adam Ottavino, trade for Tony Watson, and then let the bullpen situation play itself out.

Twins Daily Roundtable: Biggest Off-Season Need
ChrisKnutson replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I gave some thought about the D-Back’s situation, and I believe the only way for them to retain Goldschmidt is to trade Greinke, and maybe even Ketel Marte. And if the Twins were to get involved, I’d rather they pass on Greinke, and offer Gibson and Cave (or Wade) for a SS in Marte, because I think I’d be a good deal for both clubs. The D-Backs get cheap replacements for Corbin and Pollock, along with the financial flexibility to extend Goldschmidt and sign a couple less expensive FA, while the Twins would get a true SS, with potential at the plate, and reason to finally move Polanco to 2nd.- 88 replies

Twins Daily Roundtable: Biggest Off-Season Need
ChrisKnutson replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
By “expiring assets,” I actually meant Castro, Gibson, Odorizzi, Pineda, and Reed, sorry for the misunderstanding. And while I’m against a over paying for the hell of it, I understand that’s how free agency typically goes, so if we are going to hand out a multi-year contract (2-3 yrs), I’d prefer we hand it to proven bats like Wilson Ramos and Nelson Cruz.- 88 replies

Look, what you’re saying makes sense and all, but there’s no denying that Cave’s “sneaky power” in a 4th OF role is worth more than just a PTBNL. Realistically, Cave’s value equates to a prospect located at bottom-half of an organization’s top 30.

How about “Jake Cave: Trade or Keep???”

Twins Daily Roundtable: Biggest Off-Season Need
ChrisKnutson replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Or how about we actually take a step back for one season (maybe half?) and focus on cleansing the roster of expiring assets, along with aquiring young ML talent. Rather than signing 10 FA not named Manny Machado this offseason, I’d prefer the Twins FO to be out in the trade market targeting any one of these guys: (ARI) (SS/2B) Ketel Marte (BAL) (1B/OF) Trey Mancini (TBR) (RHP) Yonny Chirinos (OAK) (RHP) Frankie Montas (NYY) (LHP) Justus Sheffield (NYY) (RHP) Chance Adams (HOU) (C/OF) Garret Stubbs (PHI) (3B/SS) J.P. Crawford (TBR) (UTL) Joey Wendle- 88 replies

I know Castro’s defense is valuable and that he’s still injured, but I still got to believe some team out there would give up a decent prospect (preferably a catcher) for a guy like Castro. Not only would this free up more playing time for Garver (maybe Astudillo), but this would also free up $8M that could go towards a more realistic FA like Patrick Corbin. Although it seems like I’m talking about “dumping salary,” I’m actually thinking more around the lines of “salary relocation,” where the money that would’ve otherwise gone to Castro ($8M), Pineda ($8M), Odorizzi ($6.3M), Grossman ($2M), Gibson ($4.2M), and Reed ($8.5M), now can go towards players who actually have a future with the team (current players, free agents, trade acquisitions).

Contention for 2019 and Beyond
ChrisKnutson commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
“They need a solid plan for improvement,” really? If that means going into the offseason with the idea that we’re only a couple overpriced free agents away from winning the division, then we’re not only screwed in the short term, but also the long term. What this “long suffering fan base” deserves is a FO that won’t waver from their commitment to (re)build a consistent winner. Now I’m not saying we shouldn’t sign a FA, but signing anyone other than Machado, Escobar, or Andrus (if he opts out) to a multi-year deal would be a mistake. Although, when it comes to one year deals, I think Wilson Ramos and Gio Gonzalez would be great fits. And I know many would disagree with me, but I think the FO should utilize the trade market more this offseason because there’s just way more options to choose from, and better talent to be had. For example, if we’re really in need of a better defensive SS, than the Twins could swing a deal with the Phillies to aquire former 1st rounder, J.P. Crawford.
