    Well, screaming isn't allowed at Twins Daily As camp has gone on, yes, to me Kubel has had the feeling of more and more inevitability even despite his performance. And if he's not hitting he's not filling a need. I've got to think not everyone in the front office is going-ho about Kubel, though. Parker H. has posted heat charts here on TD, and Kubel's swing has developed a massive hole where the high strike is, and I've got to think opponents are aware of this and will start exploiting it once the games count.

    That sounds right. The "expected rainout" excuse for starting with four starters feels a little off to me.

    Yes, reinforcing the suspicion that this is a team sorely in need of p.r. fundamentals! This was an easy win, turned into a minor debacle. It's not like we're talking about Worley. Once LENIII's leak on Gibson appeared, the inner circle needs to get on the same page (I assume they have each other's phone numbers) and in this case, immediately own it: "Yes, Gibson will be our fifth starter. He's had a great spring and we're confident he is ready to contribute," said Antony. Done. Being a Twins fan is hard work these days--they should pay us, not the other way around

    Good correction. And I like Dozier. I had Plouffe in mind when I wrote that, and also the revolving door of mostly futile SS/2B since Bartlett was traded -- and there's nothing wrong with acquiring another team's prospects either, for sure.

    Hi Twinkie. I think many people here will agree with you on most points EXCEPT the Span for Meyer trade. Are you that pessimistic on Meyer? In my opinion he just doesnt quite have the seasoning/innings yet to be a regular contributor. True he pitched college though. I think the Twins are making the right decisions for him. We could see him at some point this summer. The pattern of evaluation: Twins can't seem to develop an infielder any more to save their lives. But look at what they've done with center fielders -- pretty impressive. I think that was the reasoning behind dealing Span and Revere, that Hicks was getting close, and now we're seeing Buxton coming along too.

    Like the rest of you, I'm glad to see Gibson make the team. He's earned it and he's finally ready and I hope the best for him. Without wishing ill on any of the other starters, I'd also like to see Deduno get some starts now. Go team!

    I agree we need to be playing young guys. The Kubel signing is already leaving a bad taste for me. He has a huge hole in his swing on the high strike which Parker has shown on other threads. He cannot hit for average any more. Speaking of sample size.. I also think of Colabello as a potential DH but if you go back and look, Colabello hit 150 points lower than Pinto with twice the at bats and Pinto's power numbers dwarfed Colabellos. Pinto is one of the young guys and needs to be in the lineup, at catch, DH, third base, shortstop, somewhere. In hindsight 2013 would have been the season to baptize the young guys with playing time.

    I disagree with the patience given to Plouffe by this organization, but that sort of thing is just a symptom of a larger problem. We can hope the pitching is so good (or good enough) that the quality of play rises overall and we get some wins, and build on that.

    I suspected that might be Mauer but I think the three hole is fine (maybe move him up to second for a while if you feel the need). Arcia and/or Willingham batting behind him should be ok. I'm a believer in chemistry, and also a believer in promoting Jake Mauer to the big leagues as a bench coach. Why not?

    WTH, a little carried away on the metaphor there? Antony's comments on Kubel were a little ominous: "ok he's had some moments, but you have to pay attention to the way things are playing out." Ominous for Kubel, that is. We're happy for Kubel but he's kind of redundant here, to say the least. But I can see a scenario where Bartlett makes the club. Reports are that he's playing well. If Florimon starts in AAA, or someone turns up injured, or maybe Bartlett just puts it together and gets productive this final week. It sounds snarky to praise a guy who's 1-for-Spring Training but I could get on board with Bartlett maybe. Or, to stay with the metaphor: don't put the final nail in his coffin just yet.

    If the Twins need a Jason, I'd go with the Bartlett variety, who can come in the game and play short (or outfield, I suppose) after a Colabello pinch hit appearance. It would be a head scratcher and probably a little suspicious if Kubel made the team at this point (assuming he doesn't go on a sudden rampage etc etc).

    Do you have an opinion?? and are there specific players behind this? The OBP for the home run guy looks unrealistically low with the huge gap in OPS. For the long baseball season I'd rather have the on-base guy, which was what Moneyball was predicated on-- get on base, no bunts, no steals, let the next guy come up and get on base, keep the line moving, and so on, inning after inning, game after game, all year. Of course those Oakland teams also had great pitching... Tweak the numbers and it would be an interesting experiment to simulate a bunch of seasons with those guys and all others factors being equal. NCAA brackets get simulated a lot this time of year.

    Nice catch and interesting thought. It would have been nice if the Vikings had been aggressive with replacing Ponder earlier. We'll see if that approach works in baseball or if that's what they're planning to do.

    I wouldn't be opposed to giving Meyer a few low-stakes appearances out of the pen before he makes his first start. I wouldn't let him age in the pen for half a season though, which is what would have happened, and is where I disagree. Also, at this point it's a horrible idea to send Gibson to the pen. Honestly it sounds like Gardy is just reacting to things he heard watching the Cardinals in the postseason last year (Cardinals young guys (and I mean YOUNG) Lance Lynn, Wacha, Kelly, Shelby Miller having all began their careers in relief for a short time). Who the heck knows anymore what the secret is to developing pitching-- the Twins brain trust is already on record now disagreeing on how to best develop Alex Meyer (that's the skeptical take, anyway--but needs to be said). I am glad Gardy at least appears to be lobbying for the young guys, which I will back him 100% on. Great post, Jokin, thanks a lot,

    It might be a good idea to make Herrmann the 25th man, given Herrmann's versatility and expecting that Pinto could then DH some and Suzuki should be pinch hit for quite often.

    The nastiest autograph I ever got as a kid was.. wait for it... Hrbek. I didn't hold it against him :-) my adopt-a-guy has been Parmelee (he must have hit a home run at a game I attended, or something like that) but alas, he may be going the way of Mastro soon...

    Source? I don't think Seth mentions Meyer. I'm all in favor of Meyer starting in AA. With even a quick stop in AAA before MLB. I do think Tonkin's and Deolis's stock is rising.

    Agreed with what Duluth Fan said about RBI. For example, final score is 3-1, we look at the box score and see: 4 1 1 3 , and it's a good bet it was a 3-run homer. But for a long time, the papers didn't run the RBI column, so you saw: 4 1 1 and the guy above him 4 1 1 and the guy above him 4 1 1. So at some point RBI was meaningful enough to change the way the regular fan interpreted the game. The other problem is it's getting rarer and rarer that our first knowledge of a completed ball game is by reading a boxscore, so RBI is starting to lose ground. But I do think its fun for comparing elite hitters against each other, like Ortiz vs Cabrera vs Ryan Braun etc. and it's not going away as a Triple Crown stat. In my opinion, the most useless stat you'll find in a newspaper box score is the Hold. Eighth inning, leading 5-1, come in to pitch with the bases loaded, give up a bases-clearing double on the first pitch, get an out, and then you walk the bases loaded again. Your lead is down to a run, 5-4, and you get yanked. Congratulations, you've earned a "Hold" for not surrendering the lead in a save situation. An agent must have thought up that stat.
